O Geoff Travis set up a record store calledRough Trade which was dedicated to sellingmusic by local bands.

BeginningsO Britpop began when Blur's single "Popscene" and

Suede's "The Drowners" were released around thesame time in the spring of 1992.

O Suede were the first of the new crop of guitar-orientated bands to be embraced by the UK musicmedia as Britain's answer to Seattle's grungesound.

O Their debut album Suedebecame the fastest-selling debut album in the history of the UK. In April1993, Selectmagazine featured Suede's leadsinger Brett Anderson on the cover with a UnionFlag in the background and the headline "Yanks go

home!".

O Blur's new approach was inspired by their tour of

the United States in the spring of 1992.O While Modern Life is Rubbishwas a moderate

success, it was Blur's third album Parklifethatmade them arguably the most popular band in theUK in 1994.

"The Battle of Britpop

O A chart battle between Blur and Oasis dubbed "TheBattle of Britpop" brought Britpop to the forefront ofthe British press in 1995.

The bands had initially praised each other but overthe course of the year antagonisms between thetwo increased.
