MASSACHUSETTS vs. BOSTON COLLEGEBoston College closes out the regular season series against Massachusetts Friday night at the Mullins Center; a venue where the Eagles have no lost in since 2012, but have the Minutemen have put up a good fight in recent battles. As members of Hockey East, the Eagles lost their first trip to western Mass against the Minutemen on Jan. 7, 1995 (3-5) before rattling off 16-consecutive victories on Masschusetts’ ice over the course of 10 years from 1995 to 2005. Since then, UMass has given BC a run for its money as Boston College holds only a slight 6-5-1 margin over the Minutemen in games at the Mullins Center since 2006. Boston College and UMass initiated their season series in early November as the Eagles trounced the Minutemen, 7-0, at Kelley Rink. UMass fell victim to being BC’s fourth shutout opponent in five games on Nov. 3, marking a program first. BC scored six goals in the second period against UMass, marking the first time that’s happened on The Heights since Nov. 25, 1995 (St. Lawrence, 10-4 win). When BC and UMass met on a Tuesday in early November, it marked the 75th meeting between the two Commonwealth institutions. Boston College holds the overall series advantage, 59-13-3 and is 8-1-1 in its last 10 encounters with the Minutemen. Since Massachusetts has joined Hockey East, Boston College has mounted a 32-6-3 mark on home ice and a 27-5-1 win-loss total in Amherst.

MINUTE ON THE MINUTEMENAs Hockey East action is in full swing to start the second half of the season, UMass find itself in a three-way tie for eighth place in the league with New Hampshire and Vermont. The Minutemen are 2-7-4 in conference play and 7-12-4 on the whole. Since getting shutout at Boston College (7-0) on Nov. 3, the Minutemen are 3-12-3 and have lost 10 of their last decisions since Nov. 27. Over the course of UMass’ skid, Massachusetts has been outscored 41-12 with its only win over the last 11 games coming as an overtime victory at Army (2-1). Senior Shane Walsh has been the catalyst for Massachusetts’ offense as the veteran is tied for 13th in the country in goals scored with 15 (0.65 gpg) while sophomore Dennis Kravchenko is 66th in college hockey in points per game (0.95 ppg). First-year forward Austin Plevy is UMass’ leading scoring rookie and is ranked 33rd amongst all rookies with 0.68 points per game (6-9-15). Freshman Nic Renyard is the primary goaltender for the Minutemen with a 4-8-4 record along with a .902 save percentage (62nd) and 3.41 goals against average (71st). The UMass offense is ranked eighth in Hockey East and 39th, nationally, with 2.48 goals per game but the defense has struggled most of the season. The Minutemen own the conference’s highest goals against average (3.61) and are tied for 54th, nationally, in that category. Both UMass’ power play (12-for-75) and penalty kill (67-of-83) are tied for 38th in college hockey.

HISTORIC HALF DOZENThatcher Demko matched history after posting six shutouts in seven starts (Oct. 16 - Nov. 8, 2015), stringing together a pair of three-game shutout streaks. Demko’s historic run tied Blaine Lacher of Lake Superior State for posting six shutouts in seven games, marking only the second time in the history of college hockey something of that magnitude has been achieved. Below are the runs posted by each goaltender:

SHUSH.Demko’s first shutout streak started in the third period at Rensselaer on Oct. 11, 2015, where he played shutout hockey for 206 minutes and two seconds (206:02), denoting the 20th-longest stretch of zero goals allowed in the history of the game. Demko’s second run started in the third period of the Denver contest on Oct. 30 and spanned to the second period against Michigan State, surpassing his previous total and posting another 208 minutes and 36 seconds (208:36) of scorelss hockey. That mark is the 17th-best stretch in the history of the game. Demko’s scoreless string of 208:36 is third longest in school history behind Scott Clemmensen (254:23 – Jan. 9-24, 1998) and Cory Schneider (242:19 – Jan. 13-27, 2006).

STANDING TALL AMONGST THE BESTDemko is currently seventh in the nation in goals against average (1.74) and eighth in save percentage (.936) on the year and tied for second in overall shutouts with six. For a career, the 6-foot-4 backstopper is 49-28-7 (.671) with a 2.09 goals against average and a .926 save percentage (2,071 saves on 2,237 shots). If Demko’s 2.09 GAA held, it would be tied for BC's second-best career mark all time. His six shutouts this season is two shy of matching the single-season mark set by Cory Schneider during the 2005-06 season. Demko possesses nine career shutouts, good for fourth-best all-time. He is three blankings shy of matching John Muse’s third-place mark of 12 career shutouts (2007-11). Schneider holds the record with 15 (2004-07) while Scott Clemmensen is second with 13 (1997-2001).

LIVING HISTORYThe Schiller Family Head Hockey Coach of Boston College, Jerry York, enters his 44th season of coaching college hockey. Not only is York the winningest coach in the game’s history, having amassed 999 victories and a win-loss total of 999-595-108 (.619), York is approaching another historic benchmark. After locking up the most wins all-time at his alma mater (502) and heads into his 22nd season behind the Eagles’ bench, he now has the 1,000-win plateau in his sites. York is just ONE win away from hitting that number as he is already the winningest coach in the game’s history.

McCAUTIONDefenseman Ian McCoshen broke through offensively and scored his first-career four-point performance on Jan. 15 against BU. It also stands as BC's fifth four-point showing this season. McCoshen is on his first four-game point streak since Feb. 14-27, 2014. The Faribault, Minn., native has accounted for three goals and four assists over his recent offensive outburst.

SHORT-HANDED LAY-UPAustin Cangelosi converted on a penalty shot against BU on Jan. 15, marking the Eagles' first penalty shot goal since Chris Kreider tallied one against Notre Dame on Nov. 18, 2011. It should be noted, Cangelosi's penalty shot occurred when the Eagles were short-handed.

HATS OFFFreshman Colin White, fresh off his trip to Finland as a member of Team USA's bronze-medal winning team at the World Junior Championship, responded with Boston College's first hat trick of the season on Jan. 8 vs. PC and added an assist for his second-career four-point performance. For his performance, White was awarded his third Hockey East Rookie of the Week honor. White's hat trick marks BC's first since Ryan Fitzgerald scored all three goals in a 3-2 win at home over Connecticut on Jan. 24, 2015.

AVOIDING HISTORYBoston College's convincing 7-3 victory over Providence on Jan. 8 helped the Eagles avoid their first four-game losing streak since the 2003-04 season when BC lost four in a row from Feb. 28 to March 11, 2004..

SPECIAL TEAMS TALESThe Eagles' power play awoke in the Providence series, scoring five power play tallies over the course of two games. BC added two more against the Terriers on Jan. 15 as the power play unit rose from 38th in the nation to 20th in four games (20-for-101 - 19.8%). Boston College's penalty kill remains the top corps in Hockey East and ranked 11th overall, killing off penalties at a rate of 85.6 percent.

FITZ IN A FLASHRyan Fitzgerald is one of 46 skaters in college hockey to have score three game-winning goals this season. He is the first Eagle to 10 goals and now leads BC in goals scored (13). Fitzgerald is tied with Colin White for the team lead in points (13-15-28) and is tied for 13th in all of college hockey with 1.33 points per game. The North Reading, Mass. native recorded his second four-point performance of the season on Jan. 8.

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUUUUL TIME, OF THE YEARAs of Wednesday, Boston College is ranked ninth in the Pairwise ranking with an RPI rating of .5697. Providence is the only team in the league ahead of BC in fourth..

POWER PLAY SCHMOWER PLAYWhen the opponent goes on the power play, Boston College has had no problem taking matters into its own hands to score. The Eagles have six short-handed goals on the season while Ryan Fitzgerald and Zach Sanford both have scored a pair. They onlu two skaters in Hockey East (Steven Swavely - Maine) to have accomplished that feat thus far.

WHITE TURNED TO BRONZEFreshman Colin White returns to the United States as a bronze-medal winner from the 2016 World Junior Championship from Helsinki, Finland. The Hanover, Mass., native finished second on Team USA in goals (3), assists (4), points (7) and plus/minus rating (+5). White scored a short-handed goal and led Team USA in shooting percentage (30% - 3-for-10).

CHART TOPPERSThe Eagles’ offensive and defensive units still rank amongst the best. Boston College’s defense is ranked the sixth-best unit in the country (1.91 gpg) while the offense is one of five teams in college hockey that is averaging four goals or more. BC is fifth with 4.05 goals per game. The Eagles’ scoring margin of +2.14 is the second-highest total in the NCAA.

CAPTAIN VERSATILETeddy Doherty is tied for sixth on BC in scoring as a defenseman, tallying eight goals and as many assists. Four of his seven goals have come via the power. Since the addition of defenseman Michael Kim, Doherty has flex to a forward and will be predominantely used up front for the foreseeable future. Amongst defensemen, Doherty is tied for 13th with 0.76 points per game.

QUICK DRAW CANGEAustin Cangelosi scored 12 seconds into the home opener against Wisconsin, marking the fastest goal scored by an Eagle since Matt Price tallied 11 seconds into the game against Northeastern on March 7, 2008. The Estero, Fla., native scored twice against the Badgers, marking his second-career two-goal outing. His first also came against Wisconsin on Oct. 18, 2013.

HALF DOZEN BAGELSFor the first time in Boston College hockey history and second time in college hockey history, the Eagles shutout six opponents in seven games spanning from Oct. 16 to Nov. 8, 2015. Thatcher Demko backstopped all six of those blankings. The closest BC has ever come to this current record is when the Eagles shutout four teams in six games from Jan. 23 to Feb. 11, 2000.

WHADDYA HAVE ON DRAFTBoston College sports the most NHL draft picks of any current college hockey team. Of the eight student-athletes that are first-round draft picks, BC has two dressing in maroon and gold. Alex Tuch (Minnesota) was drafted 18th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft while Colin White (Ottawa) was taken 21st overall in the 2015 Draft.

The NCHC will serve as a co-host for the College Hockey Showdown with Madison Square Garden while North Dakota will be designated as the home team. PRESEASON PRECEDENTBoston College was selected as the preseason favorite to win the Hockey East regular-season title as voted on by the league coaches and announced on Sept. 21. The Eagles received 115 overall votes and picked up seven of the league’s 12 first-place votes. The Eagles’ pick as the preseason favorite marks the seventh time in the last eight seasons and the 14th time in the last 17 occasions that BC has been picked as the preseason favorite, or co-favorite, to win the league title.

POLE POSITIONThe Boston College men’s hockey team was tabbed the unit to beat as the Eagles earned the No. 1 preseason ranking in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls unveiled on Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, respectively. This marks the seventh time the Eagles have been slotted as the top position in the preseason. The last time Boston College was ranked No. 1 in the country was towards the end of the 2013-14 season when the Eagles ran off a 19-game unbeaten mark, winning 17 games and skating to a pair of draws over the course of the run. Boston College finished No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, in the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine final polls upon conclusion of the 2014-15 season. The Eagles are currently NO. 2 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 3 in the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine poll.

Coaches that are Boston College hockey alums – Jerry York, Greg Brown and Marty McInnis. All three have been inducted into Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

With the addition of Tommy Cross to the Boston Bruins roster, the Eagles are tied for the most alumni in the NHL for the 2015-16 season with 17 so far

NCAA Tournament victories in the last 18 years. That total is 11 victories more than North Dakota, which has totaled 23 NCAA wins since 1998, the second-highest tournament win total in college hockey.

Since Jerry York led his first Boston College team to the 1997 Frozen Four, the Eagles have the second most wins in college hockey. North Dakota has racked up the most in that span with 492 while Michigan sits at 489 wins.

Jerry York’s overall record is 999-595-108 (.618) in his 44th season as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College; he owns the most victories of any Division 1 coach in the history of college hockey. York is 34-12 in NCAA Tournament games as the head coach at Boston College; his 39 wins overall in the NCAA Tournament is also the highest total in Division I history.

NCAA Championships in the last 14 years. During that time period, only Denver and Minnesota, each with two, have won multiple national titles.

Frozen Four appearances in the last 18 years; the highest total among all teams in college hockey. Only Boston College (11), North Dakota (nine), Michigan (six), Minnesota (five) and Michigan State (three) have advanced to more than two Frozen Fours during that time period.

Recently departed defenseman Noah Hanifin and incoming freshman forward Colin White were selected by the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators, respectively (fifth and 21st overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the 16th and 17th Eagles in the last 28 years to have been drafted in the first round of the NHL. They join Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009), Kevin Hayes (24th, 2010), Michael Matheson (23rd, 2012) and Alex Tuch (18th, 2014) as Boston College first-round draftees.

Ian McCoshen and Thatcher Demko returned as members of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team that competed at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, while Noah Hanifin and Alex Tuch earned their spot for the first time. Incoming freshman Miles Wood was also a member, upping BC’s representation to five Eagles on last year’s squad. With the addition of Hanifin, Tuch and Wood, the BC trio became the 25th, 26th and 27th Eagle participants in World Junior play under head coach Jerry York.

With NCAA Division I championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012, Boston College became the first team since 1961 to win three championships in six seasons; Murray Armstrong’s Denver team won three titles in four years (1958, 1960, 1961). The all-time best is five titles in six years, accomplished by Michigan (1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956).

BC has competed in five of the last 10 national championship games – 2006 (Wisconsin, 1-2), 2007 (Michigan State, 1-3), 2008 (Notre Dame, 4-1), 2010 (Wisconsin, 5-0) and 2012 (Ferris State, 4-1).
