How to conduct a basic crash scene investigation

INDIANAPOLIS AIRPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT


OBJECTIVE: To understand the process, procedures, and utilization of outside resources to conduct a complete crash investigation.


MISSION: To gain confidence in conducting a thorough crash investigation from beginning to end regardless of

severity (Property Damage, Personal Injury, or Fatality).


Responding to the Scene:Start thinking of possible injuries, number,

terrain, etc.Utilizing outside resources


Scene Safety:Watch for power lines, hazmat, and secondary

crashes

Don’t take photos from inside your vehicle.

Crash scene photos


Get a good shot of the license plate.


If the scene is long start from the beginning and work your way to the scene taking pictures.


Use your lights (headlights, spotlights, takedown lights, new light bar, etc.) to illuminate the scene before taking photos like this.


Avoid shadows in your pictures !!


Don’t take pictures with police lights in the background !!

Get the pole number and who owns it, if electrical lines are down stay back and stay away from water sources nearby, the arcing end of the line, or metal that it is touching.

D-1 stated ……………..D-2 stated……………..W-1 stated…………….etc. INVESTIGATION: When I arrived on scene I observed V-1 off the roadway into utility pole #........V-2 was in the roadway facing westbound with rear end damage. Evidence at the scene indicated that V-1 struck V-2 in the right rear causing the damage to V-2. Damage to V-1 was to the front end with induced damage to the right side due to striking the utility pole……… etc. etc. etc.

Narrative format


When the crash occurs on a ramp, the ramp technically is all the way to the end of the ramp itself, regardless of a jurisdiction change. IE, it occurred on I-70 Ramp 68 C/D.


Summary: You should now have the confidence to be able to command, direct, and investigate any type of crash that you respond to and be able to work it from start to finish. How to complete a ARIES crash report, and how to take good detailed photos of the scene.
