Olson and Wersal tops in Women’s Walleye Tourney Despite carding just three measurable walleye, a 31-3/4 incher (12.38 pounds on the length to weight conversion chart) was enough to put Carla Olson and Megan Wersal on top of the leader board at the conclusion of the Glasgow/Fort Peck Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited Women’s Walleye Tournament held Saturday, August 1st. Their weight of 15.40 pounds earned them the first-place money worth $1,000. A very similar card was turned in by a team out of Fairview, Holly Cotter and Jeanna Cotter, as they also carded three walleyes including a 12.06-pound lunker (31 inches). They were less than a pound away from winning with their 14.47 pounds, but it was still good for $700. And placing third were Verna Cotton of Nashua and Farrah Burt of Laurel... on a single walleye! It happened to be the largest of the tournament, a 32 incher (13.25 pounds) which was good for $600 plus the big walleye pot. Glasgow’s Darci Ellefson and Jill Sanders was one of just six teams to reel in five measurable walleyes, their largest being 2.76 pounds (20 inches), their smallest a 16-3/4 incher (1.58 pounds) for a total of

10.80 pounds and a 4th-place check of $500. In fifth place, also with five ’eyes, were Cindy Sundheim of Fairview (she’s a Montana Governor’s Cup and Women’s Walleye Tourney regular) and Catie Leininger of Livingston, North Dakota. Their largest walleye was a 4.26 pounder to put their total weight at 10.52 pounds.

Just out of the money were Glasgow’s Kay Detiene and Chanti Cromiller. Had they caught one more walleye they would have been in the money, as their weight of 10.22 pounds was the only measurable walleye on their card. A lot of fish were caught on Saturday, but finding those

Carla Olson, Megan Wersal and Captain Kirk show off the second largest of four walleyes that were over 10 pounds in the Women’s Walleye Tournament.

measurable walleyes turned out to be difficult for a pile of teams, especially since high winds picked up shortly after noon and quickly churned up Fort Peck Reservoir to lake wind advisory conditions and had most teams hanging it up by 2:00. “It got real rough, real quick,” said Carla Olson, “but we had a blast.” Being piloted by Kirk “KirkyBurger” Boyer, Carla and Megan caught their lunker in 17 feet of water, their smaller ones coming from a depth of 22 feet. “We even went as deep as thirty feet,” Carla said, “it was hard to find them.” In fact, this Glasgow team reeled in more northern pikes than walleyes. Like many-a-walleye angler, she wasn’t too thrilled about that. In a field one team shy of 50, nine teams were unable to card a walleye. 10 teams had only one walleye (including the two hawgs in 3rd and 6th place); 13 teams caught just two walleyes; six teams with three walleyes; five teams with four walleyes; and as mentioned earlier, six teams measured five. In all, 104 measurable walleye were caught (2.1 walleyes per team average) for a total weight of 204.57 pounds, ever so slightly below a two pound average per walleye (bear in mind that the four largest walleyes accounted for 47.9 pounds, 23% of the total weight). With headquarters at the Fort Peck Marina, all the gals had a great time whether they caught fish or not, and you can bet that there are some more women hooked on fishing in general.

EVANGELIST PREACHES ATST. MARIE BASE CHAPEL ....perceptions, opinions, facts Yesterday Aug. 2nd my neighbor Earl Handy and I drove over to the Base Chapel to meet and listen to the new Preacher, John Collins. Walking up the Chapel steps to introduce myself, my first visual impression was “This Preacher resembles General George Custer with the stature of Buffalo Bill.” After introductions and brief conversation, I was given the perception that this “Revival Style Preacher” was a no nonsense, straight talking, pull no punches type! I said to myself: “This is going to be an interesting experience.” Here are John Collins’ opening remarks....1. I won’t preach for profit, I don’t pass offering trays

between musical scores, but there is a little black cigar box by the door as you leave if you desire to contribute to his cause of youth activities, teaching, and helping folks. If folks need house painting and provide the paint, he will provide people of the church to paint. If you do or don’t leave an offering, it’s not important.

2. I don’t have big bands, nor do I provide pastries or other enticements to come hear my sermons.

3. I dress comfortable and casual and tell my followers to do the same as long as it’s decent.

4. He said he didn’t believe that fancy houses, cars, or clothes make a person a good Christian and it’s not hard to “Do The Right Thing.”

5. If you like his style, fine come and listen.....if not, don’t come back.

Pastor John gave an open, honest, witty, highly energetic sermon. He does not stand behind a pulpit with a written sermon. He walks up and down the aisles emphatically delivering his messages. He spoke of 2 Corinthians, 5:17 which states: “If anyone is in Christ,

Letter to the Buzz he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, behold all things have become new.” He referred to that scripture as it relates and applies to todays life problems. His message was “We are all sinners and in salvation we are delivered and rescued from sin. Christians just do what’s right.”MESSAGE in addition to the 2 Corinthians, Pastor John spoke of “Love Thy Neighbor and Know and Get Along with Your Enemy.” He also spoke of “Telling the Truth” and some of the “Other 10 Commandments.”AWARD -Pastor John Collins won the “Evangelist of The Year Award” while in competition with Joel Osteen and other well known Evangelists. He is at times in communication with Franklin Graham. (Billy Graham’s son)COMMENT- I found the “Down Home, Come to Jesus Revival Style” presentation to be refreshing in getting back to the old fashioned Church ways while disregarding the politically correct roadblocks. I encourage those that appreciate this style of practicing their faith to attend. I will closely watch the progress of Pastor Collins work in his non-denominational Christian efforts and report on same in the future. ~ Nick Chiechi - St. Marie Resident
