Heres a rundownon the current status oMontanas top uplandgame birds:

Gray (Hungarian)Partridge While no ormalsurveys are conducted orhuns in Montana, variousobservations along withweather and habitatconditions suggest hunswill be average to belowaverage again this season.Observations in Regions4, 6, and 7 suggest averagenumbers. Observations

rom Region 5 suggestnumbers will be belowaverage and lower thanlast year.

Pheasants Montana is exper-iencing a large declinein CRP acreage alongthe northern tier o thestate, which may havean impact on huntingexperiences in Regions4 and 6. In this area, spring crow countswhere wildli e biologiststravel speci ic routes tocount and record thecrowing calls o cockpheasants to determinepopulation trendswere 42 percent abovethe long term average.Region 7 reported thatpopulations will varybetween air to nearthe long-term averagein good habitat. In

    2014 MontanaUpland GameBird HuntingForecast

northwestern Montana, weather in Region 1 resultedin below average numbers on the Ninepipe Wildli eManagement Area. Region 3 reported averagenumbers or southwestern Montana. In Region 5,pheasant crow counts varied but were below thelong-term average. Overall, Region 5 expects the2014 season will be similar to last years season.

Sage-Grouse Statewide, male attendance at leks averaged 13.1males/lek, which is 54% below long-term average anddown rom 14.9 males per lek last year. Te continueddrop is likely a unction o cool, wet conditions duringthe brood-rearing season in 2013 which led to low broodsurvival. Te drop in abundance was more apparent ineastern Montana; abundance estimates in southwesternMontana were stable but still below long-term average.Consequently, hunters can expect numbers to be nearaverage to well below average in areas open to sage-grouse hunting. Preliminary reports suggest nest andbrood success are excellent in 2014 which may mitigateadditional declines.

Sharp-tailed grouseRegion 6 reported air to average numbers in goodhabitat. Lek surveys and other observations in Region6 indicate sharp-tail numbers will be near the longterm average across the region. General observations

rom Region 5 suggest below average numbers. Region7 reported that sharp-tail populations will be near thelong-term average where habitat conditions are good.

Mountain Grouse Observations in western Montana suggest averageto slightly above average numbers o all species.Preliminary in ormation rom Region 5 suggests overallblue grouse and ruffed grouse numbers will likelyremain below the long term average.

Chukar Region 5 reports that chukar numbers remain belowaverage but may have some potential or improvementthis year.

by Bruce Auchly, FWP A recent conversation with a riend

brought about one o those questionsthat periodically shake the oundations oWestern civilization. What does an ant taste like to a trout? No, really. We were talking about y shing or trout on the

Missouri River, and he was describing his use o tricospinners. ricos, short or tricorythodes, are tiny mayiesthat hatch in midsummer. Tey tend to hatch andemerge rom the river in the morning, y away, mate, then all back to the water. When they all back to thewater they are called spinners. I you know how to y sh a spinner trico imitation, you can do really well. My riend does really well. But afer the spinner all ends each day, theshing gets tougher. So my riend said he switches toants. Because there are ants everywhere in nature, antimitations catch sh. Why? Whats so tasty about an ant? Decades ago I asked a similar question to a

pro essional y tier, concerning a Royal Coachmany pattern, which imitates nothing in nature and so iscalled an attractor pattern. His response? A Royal Coachman probably lookslike strawberry shortcake to a trout. In other words, nobody knows. But it works. Ants, however, are different. Tey are real. Teyexist. And they contain ormic acid. Ants, especially redones, produce ormic acid to sting predators, capture

ood and de end themselves. Tey have a poison glandin their abdomen that contracts and releases the acid.Formic acid, Im told, is bitter. Although one Internetexpert (yeah, let that sink in) says the ormic acid inants makes them taste citrusy, like a lemon. So does an ant taste like a bitter, or lemony, crunchy

morsel to a rainbow trout? Nobody knows, and the troutIve talked to, dont answer. It is known that sh taste things. Tey have tastebuds, which are commonly located inside and outside othe mouth. Ours, o course, are restricted to the tongue.Bottom sh, like catsh, have taste buds on their skin,ns and barbels. Te barbels in particular allow the sh

in murky water to taste ood rom a reasonable distance;they dont actually have to touch it. Tink o the advantages i we could do with that.

You would have the ability to wake up at 3a.m. and rom your bed taste the lefoverpizza in the re rigerator. Ten decide i youwanted to get up and eat. Wait. Tat could be lethal. While rainbow trout presumably havetaste buds, too, they rely a lot on their vision

to locate ood. Tis time o year, there are plenty oterrestrials (bugs) about, ying, hopping, alling into

the water. All a trout has to do is nd a secure hiding spotand watch or a tasty looking bug to hit the sur ace. I itdoesnt look like something that hooked them recently, and they are not spooked by a telltale shing line, theyprobably will try to swallow it. While an ant imitation would have no avor, atrouts memory or instinct, I assume, would remind itthe last ant it ate tasted pretty good. And i an ant is not available, then maybe thatgrasshopper oating by will do. I wonder what a grasshopper tastes like to a trout.
