Lib Dems Lead Fight to save Human Rights Act!

A one size fits all for grey bins

You will loseyour right to privacy! There has been shock and outrage at the new Conservative government’s threats to the Human Rights Act. As far back as 2007 David Cameron vowed to repeal the Human Rights Act if he was elected, even though the UK was one of the first countries to ratify the European convention on human rights in 1951.

The ‘snoopers charter’ was proposed by Home Secretary Theresa May during the last parliament which would require internet service providers and mobile phone companies to maintain records (but not content) of each user’s internet browsing activity (including social media), email, voice calls, internet gaming, and mobile phone messaging and store the records for 12 months. The anticipated cost is £1.8 billion. Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg withdrew his support for this bill in April 2013 and the Liberal Democrat Party blocked it from being reintroduced during the 2010-2015 parliament.

Still nothing has been decided on the future of our grey bins. Despite a newspaper article in which a Labour Councillor revealed that Bolton Council would spend £2mil downsizing the grey bins for every resident in the borough from the 240L bins to the 140L bins, nothing yet has been agreed.Since the article went to press, meetings have been bizzarely and hurriedly arranged and then cancelled.Bolton’s Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Roger Hayespressed Cllr Cliff Morris at the last council meeting on Wednesday 24th June about the issue. Subseque-ntly a policy development group [PGD] will meet on the 30th June [not open topublic] and the cabinet willdiscuss it on the 8th July [this meeting is open to the public]. The amount of savings to be made in waste (£1.25mil) has already been agreed, however the method of achieving it has not.

22% of under-16’s live in poverty in Bolton

In Bolton 22 per cent of under-16’s live in poverty, although the figures have dropped in recent years it’s still a total of 12,770 youngsters across the borough living in poverty. More than 100 under-17’s were admitted to hospital as a result of mental health conditions in 2013 and 2014. 283 10-24 year olds in the borough were taken to hospital because of self harm in the same period. At any one time, roughly one in six of us is experiencing a mental health problem. Issues like these are typical in a society

where there is a vast gulf between rich and poor. Crime levels are associated with both illness and poverty. £12billion in cuts to the welfare and benfits budget are only going to make issues like mental health worse. There is a commissioning and planning group meeting 10th September which is aimed at preventing suicide in young adults, additionally I’m working with All Souls Bolton to set up a dementia reminiscing society, if you would like to help us set up the society or attend the meeting please contact me on [email protected] or 01204 846 792.
