Biography: Francis Scott Key

Born on August 1, 1779

His family owned a plantation in Maryland called Terra Rubra.

He studied law in St. John’s College in Annapolis.

He was a lawyer from Baltimore.

Music: Francis Scott KeyObserved British attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

He saw the large American flag still hanging after battle.

He was so inspired that he wrote “The Star Spangled Banner.” This song became our national anthem.

The song is still sung today during special events and it’s a connection because of its significance to American culture.

Biography: John James Audubon

Born on April 26, 1785 in Les Cayes, Santo Domingo.

After his mother died, he moved to France in 1791 with his father, half sister, and step mother.

He developed a love for nature, especially birds.

Drew complex pictures of birds and studied with Jacques-Louis David.

When he turned 18, his father sent him to Philadelphia to manage the family estate, so that he could avoid joining Napoleon’s army.

He saw many interesting birds which he drew for his portfolio.

He went to jail for failing to pay his debts.

After being freed from prison he married.

Soon after, he wrote his book “The Birds of America,” which was a huge best seller.

Connection: John James Audubon

His book is still read by many people today.

Inspired bird research and ornithologists.

Bird and nature artists are inspired by his work. John James Audubon inspired artists to study and make an effort for things that you care about.

Biography: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Born on February 27, 1807 in Portland, Maine.

By the age of 15, he had already published several poems to a Portland newspaper.

By the time of his graduation, he had published essays and poems in journals like the American Monthly Magazine and the United States Literary Gazette.

Literature: Henry Wadsworth LongfellowHe wanted to immediately start a literary career, but his father insisted he look after a different profession.

Became a professor at Harvard University.

His first volume of poetry, Voices of the Night, assured his popular reputation.

Wrote several other poems in his career, including the famous Paul Revere’s Ride.
