Living in the Void: Duplex
Towering Void: Multiples
Living in the Void
This project pushes the limits of a duplex house to be built in Columbus, Ohio. A central void is created by the building’s frame and surrounding trees. Occupying this void through circulation and program is essential to living in thiss project; both families are required to interact with the void — and, by extension, each other — to successfully inhabit this house.
The houses two frames serve as a set of planes to organize the volume of the units as they intrude on the central courtyard in varying degrees, through either the living space or circulation of the house. Trees surrounding the structure enclose the courtyard, emphasizing its status as a void confined by architecture.
This project converts a duplex house from Columbus, Ohio into a multi-family apartment for New York City. Occupying a void through circulation and program had been essential in that project; this tower maintains that emphasis through focusing all units toward a central void and allowing residents to interact with others through the void.
The building’s spine serves as a plane to organize the volume of the units as they intrude on the central courtyard in varying degrees. Trees surrounding the structure enclose the courtyard, emphasizing its status as a void confined by architecture.
