STATISISTICAL COMPARISONS 5Things to Watch

• The Mountaineers are outrebounding their foes by an average of 40.7-37.3 in the last three games including 46 offensive rebounds (15.3 per game) and 12.3 second-chance points. Appalachian held a 46-42 edge, and 11-7 advantage in second-chance points at UNC. See if App can set the tone on the glass against a WF team that has a plus-6.0 margin in rebounding.

• In Wake Forest’s five losses this season, op-ponents are averaging 18.6 points per game at the free throw line, while teams are scoring just scoring an average of 8.5 in the Deacons’ four wins. App State shot a season-low five free throws at UNC. See if The Black and Gold can get to the line and take advantage of the opportunities.

• Appalachian has averaged 18 turnovers per game in the past three contests, which is better than the overall average of the Moun-taineers’ 22 miscues per contest. The Demon Deacons force opponents to commit just 15.4 turnovers per game. See if App can continue the trend of committing fewer mistakes.

• LaPresha Stanley is averaging 9.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists over the last three games. The freshman had her best all-around game against UNC with nine points and career highs in rebounds (8) and assists (6). Watch if Stanley can continue her solid play.

• Opponents are averaging 67.4 points per game against the Demon Deacons. See if the App offense can get going after scoring just 43 points in Chapel Hill on Sunday.

GAME 9 AT WAKE FOREST • DECEMBER 7, 2017

2016-17 Review• The Mountaineers went through ups and downs but won two more games than 2015-16 and earned their first-ever Sun Belt Tournament win over Coastal Carolina in the first round.

• Appalachian was one of the top rebounding teams once again placing second in rebounds per game (41.2) and the third-highest rebounding margin (+1.3).

• For the first time in the Elderkin Era, two student-athletes in Joi Jones and Madi Story garnered postseason Sun Belt recognition as third-team members.

• The six non-conference wins last season were the most since the 2012-13 when the Black and Gold won seven games outside of league action.

• Story (13.3 ppg) and former Mountaineers in Jones (13.0 ppg) and Q. Murray (10.3 ppg) were the first trio to score in double digits since the 2012-13 campaign when Anna Freeman (16.5 ppg), Maryah Sydnor (14.8 ppg) and Courtney Freeman (12.0 ppg).

Fast Forward to 2017-18• The eight talented newcomers in Maya Calder, Ashley Polacek, Tierra Wilson, Nicola Mathews, LaPresha Stanley, Anna Perez Gomez, Lainey Gosnell and Dominique Jeffery make up over 60 percent of this season’s roster.

• Coming back for App is Kaila Craven, Armani Hampton, Katelyn Doub, Madi Story and Bayley Plummer.

• However, Story went down with a heartbreaking knee injury that will sideline her for the rest of the season.

• Craven was cleared to resume basketball activities before the first exhibition, giving App its 3-point and scoring threat back on the court.

• App State was picked ninth in the Sun Belt in the preseason rankings. UT Arlington was chosen to win the conference.

• The Mountaineers will play three ACC opponents on their schedule in GT, UNC and Wake Forest.

• App also faces familiar foes in Davidson and Marshall this season, while playing UAB at home in a meeting for the first time between the opponents.

Plethora of Guards• Appalachian boasts talent at the guard position which includes Wilson, Mathews, Stanley, Craven and Perez Gomez.

• The quartet of Mountaineers can spread the floor and give App much needed 3-point shooting after finishing 11th in the league in the category.

• Mathews is a guard that can spot up from outside, or run an uptempo offense. She posted a plus-7 off the bench with seven points, four rebounds, and four assists.

• Craven is back after missing the 2016-17 campaign with a knee injury. She led the team with 41

3-pointers her freshman season while finishing third on the team and led all freshmen in the Sun Belt in scoring at 9.2 ppg.

• Craven was the first freshman since 2007-08 to lead the Black and Gold in trifectas.

• Perez Gomez (Spain), Mathews (Australia) and Polacek (Canada) are the first international athletes that coach Elderkin has signed.

• Perez Gomez and Mathews come in from Eastern Wyoming and College of Central Florida, respectively, while Polacek was a late transfer from Central Florida.

• Gomez is an improving player that can slash and score, and Polacek was a proven point guard at UCF before transferring. She’ll have to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules.

Multi-Faceted Frontcourt • The frontcourt of Jeffery, Gosnell, Plummer, Calder, and Hampton will give opposing frontcourt fits all season long with the different skill sets that each player brings to the table.

• Plummer and Hampton were two viable options as freshmen coming off the bench for App last season. Hampton proved that she could score as she poured in a career-high 14 points on her debut in the starting lineup.

• Plummer finished third on the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and second in blocks (0.7). She posted two double-doubles and three double-digit rebounding efforts, all coming in conference play. The second-year Mountaineer was nominated for preseason all-conference.

• Gosnell can stretch the floor with her outside shooting ability and athleticism. She won numerous individual and team awards, including two straight Channel 32 Blitz Player of the Year Awards.

• The Habersham Central product never averaged below 17 points and nine boards in her high school career, while becoming the first-ever athlete to earn a Division I scholarship.

• Jeffery was lauded by ESPN as a three-star recruit. “Versatile perimeter prospect competes on glass; brings developing offensive game; defends, traps, active in passing lanes. “ - ESPN.

• The Tallahassee native won three state titles in Florida at FAMU DRS and put in 13.4 points, 9.4 rebounds 2.6 steals,1.4 blocks and 1.3 assists per game.

• Calder is a physical presence on the glass as she averaged over 10 rebounds at National Christian Academy. Against Tusculum, she put up 13 points and 11 boards off the bench in just 23 minutes.

Women’s Basketball Signs Three• App State inked three future Mountaineers to the 2017-18 signing class in Brooke Bigott, Haile McDonald and A’Lea Gilbert.

• Going into her senior season, Bigott improved her numbers the previous three seasons including an impressive stat line her junior campaign where she turned in 17 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game while shooting 52 percent from beyond the arc and 74 percent from the line. Bigott has helped Seven Lakes capture three district and area championships en route to reaching the regional quarterfinals last season.

• McDonald was named All-Conference 21 four-straight years while being named Group 4A All-State her junior season. She posted substantial numbers her junior campaign in which she averaged 14.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game en route to helping Millbrook earn a stellar 28-2 mark and an appearance in the 4A state semifinals. Last season, McDonald was named the Winchester Star All-Area Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year, 4A West Region Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year and the Conference 21 West Player of the Year.

• An all-around athlete that has a nose for the ball, Gilbert plays under head coach Cristie Mitchell at South Meck where she has posted career averages of 11.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. Gilbert was named All-South Meck Conference and all-district her sophomore and junior seasons. Gilbert has scored in double figures in 48 of 78 career games including a career-high 36 points on 15-for-22 shooting her sophomore campaign. She put up her best numbers her sophomore year averaging 15.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest.

ANGEL ELDERKIN HEAD COACH FOURTH SEASON (37-62)

SOUTHERN MAINE, 1999Angel Elderkin, a longtime assistant coach in the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East, was named the eighth head coach in Ap-palachian State University women’s basketball history on Oct. 1, 2014.

In coach Elderkin’s third season at the helm, she helped App improve its win total by two games despite inju-ries to key players, and recorded its first-ever Sun Belt Tournament victory over Coastal Carolina in the first round. App won its most road games since the 2013-14 season while doubling its win total in non-conference from the 2015-16 season with six, equaling the most victories since the 2012-13 campaign.

The Mountaineers had three players score in double figures in Madi Story (13.2 ppg), Joi Jones (13.0 ppg) and Q. Murray (10.3 ppg). Story and Jones was the first duo under a coach Elderkin coached team to make an all-conference team, as the tandem were named Third Team All-Sun Belt.

With the help of Elderkin, Jones endured a successful career where she ended up in the record books rank 15th all-time in scoring with 1,178 points and sixth in assists with 299, becoming one of seven players in school history to be ranked in the top 20 in scoring and top 10 in assists. In addition, Jones was named to the WBCA “So you Want to be a Coach” Program.

Coach Elderkin continues to be an advocate in raising funds for the research and awareness in the fight against cancer. In three years at App State, she has helped raise more than $10,000, including over $5,000 combined through the Kay Yow Fund and the American Cancer Society.

The team embraced the motto “ETG” or “Embrace The Grind”, and coach Elderkin fully em-braced the saying, as she suc-cessfully battled endometrial cancer in 2016-17. Beginning with treatments in the summer, coach Elderkin still didn’t skip a beat and was at practice every day. The three-year head coach traveled to Chapel Hill for treatments every day and still made it to practice on time. She didn’t miss one game the entire season, including a daunting five-game road trip to begin the slate. Elderkin ended her treatment just after the first road trip of the season in DePaul.

For her strength and courage in the face of cancer, Elderkin was awarded the United State Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA) Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award along with ESPN analyst, Holly Rowe.

Elderkin’s second campaign at App State went through ups and downs with a 10-20 record and 7-13 mark in conference play. Despite the record, the Apps had wins against squads such as UL Lafayette, who finished fourth in the conference and went on to win the WBI Championship. Appalachian also defeated eventual Sun Belt Tournament Champion Troy on the road.

Under Elderkin’s tutelage, Madi Story improved greatly where her 8.6 point improvement was the highest in the conference while Joi Jones averaged just over 18 points in the final nine games of the season.

In the the conference opening victory at UL Monroe (12/31), it was the first time since the 1996-97 season that the Mountaineers opened conference play with a win on the road.

In Elderkin’s first season, she led the Apps to a 14-16 record and a 9-11 mark in the inaugural season in the Sun Belt. She played a pivotal role in developing young players such as Madi Story and Katelyn Doub. In one season, she contributed to Katie Mallow averaging a career-high 10.5 points per game and 2.3 assists per contest.

App State standout Maryah Sydnor went down in pro-gram history as the team’s third all-time leading scorer with 1,821 points. Another player that developed well under Elderkin was Bria Carter, who doubled nearly every statistical category and finished down the stretch as one of the better players on the team.

Under Elderkin’s reign, the Apps finished third in the Sun Belt in scoring (67.7), second in free throw percent-age (71.3) and made it a point of emphasis to crash the boards as the Apps finished tied for second in offensive rebounding and third in defensive rebounding.

With the philosophy and culture that Elderkin brings to the Appalachian State family, the Mountaineers are poised to contend for a Sun Belt Championshp sooner rather than later.
