If we want to attract pupils beyond Year 9 and if we want to get them fully to appreciate what we teach in the classroom, then it is essential that we get them out of it and onto the ground! I am a great believer in that statement by Einstein: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything one learned in school”; History students need to get out of school and see the past in the present for themselves. I have taken a Head Teacher and a Chairman of Governors on such a trip and they have seen the impact on pupil learning, as well as appreciating the improvement in examination results which they undoubtedly bring!

However, anyone bothering to read this foreword will know all this already, so why Anglia over their competitors? I hope that I am a decent enough guide, but my students hear me talking all the time in school; they benefit hugely from being guided by an expert and Anglia provide these. Every guide we have had from Anglia has enviable subject knowledge, is able not only to challenge the students and to inspire them to want to know more, but also to encourage them to think for themselves. What is in a name? You may well ask. As Anglia Battlefield Tours we became one of the UK’s largest independent history tour operators, established an enviable reputation for high quality service and led the way in fully guided tours. Now our commitment to delivering the same quality of service extends far beyond the battlefields. Each year we take an increasing number of schools on tours across Europe, to places such as Paris, Berlin, Krakow and Prague. Welcome to our new History brochure for 2011 – 2012 and welcome to a new era for Anglia. As you may well have noticed from the cover of the brochure, this year sees a landmark in the development of our company, symbolised by a change of name and a change of logo.

Peace and War: International Relations 1900-1991 The twentieth century was defined by the search for peace in a time of unprecedented conflict. New political ideologies clashed with outdated notions of government, culminating in the cataclysmic events of two global wars. The second half of the century witnessed the tensions of globalisation, conflicting economic and political systems, popular protest and the advent of international terrorism.

Our tours are designed to support the new specifications for GCSE and post-16 courses, allowing students to develop their understanding of the twentieth century in the very locations where these epoch-changing events took place.

Berlin‘The newest city I have come across’ - Mark Twain, 1892

It is perhaps true to say that one concept defines Berlin: change. This is a city that never stands still, which is constantly re-inventing itself, and never fails to surprise even the most regular visitor. Nowhere on earth experienced the twentieth century in quite such sharp relief as Berlin as it experienced Imperial autocracy, fascism, dictatorship, Communism and eventually capitalist democracy. Iconic landmarks such as the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate witnessed the end of Europe’s old order, and the emergence of one of the most brutal regimes in history, followed by total devastation and physical division.

A city divided unlike any other, Berlin still bears the scars of both conflict and reconstruction. The Berlin Wall is even now being restored, and it is possible to visit museums demonstrating the brutality of a regime in power as recently as 1989.

For students of twentieth century history, a visit to Berlin is a must.

The Somme ‘Defeat to Victory’The traditional view of the Somme is one of unmitigated disaster, horrendous casualties and a failure to adapt. However this view is not wholly borne out by the events of that summer 95 years ago. By following the British Army beyond 1st July through the subsequent weeks and months, students will see how it developed into an army equipped to win the war.

No Man’s LandANGLIA remains the only operator able to offer the unique hands-on ‘No Man’s Land experience’. Adding this to your Great War itinerary will mean your students attend a night-time briefing on the role of a sentry and the purpose of a trench raid. Entering a simulated trench system they will be asked to identify each sound in turn before deciding whether the movements they hear are a friendly patrol coming home or the enemy about to attack.

NEW Christmas Truce During more than 4 years of bitter fighting one event stood out as a beacon of humanity, the Christmas Truce of 1914, when amidst the carnage, for the first time, the fighting actually stopped. In 2011 ANGLIA is pleased to be able to mark this event with a unique programme, centring on a re-enactment of the Truce with actors in period uniforms adopting the personae of men who witnessed this remarkable event. Not only does this allow your students to discover the realities of life in the trenches for themselves but by giving them the opportunity to talk and question ‘eye-witnesses’ they can gain an understanding what it would have been like for the men who were there.

Show & Tell SessionsANGLIA is able not only to offer high quality guided tours but can also give your students a unique hands-on experience.

What better way is there to get inside the mind of ‘Tommy Atkins’ than by walking the same ground wearing his boots, tin hat, tunic & webbing and carrying a Lee Enfield Rifle. Developing the very successful ‘Show & Tell’ sessions we ran as part of our 2009 Christmas Truce tour, ANGLIA is pleased to be able to offer student groups touring with us to the Somme and Ypres, the opportunity to handle authentic Great War equipment. This engaging session led by your ANGLIA guide will include both a short Brief on the equipment on display as well as the chance for one lucky ‘volunteer’ to don full kit - which makes a perfect photo opportunity.

Living History visitsWhilst a guided tour to the battlefields of France & Flanders remains the best way for many students to begin to understand the scale and impact of the conflict, for those looking for an another means to bring the realities of trench warfare to life for younger students, ANGLIA is able to offer an excellent alternative. No single conflict has affected so many people over such a wide area as the war that engulfed the world from 1939. The Second World War truly is the defining act of the Twentieth Century. A clash of extreme doctrines, of dictatorships and democracies that resulted in over 50 million killed and countless millions left homeless. Other optionsOccupied FranceApart from the Ardennes the two most northern departments of France, Nord and the Pas-de-Calais, are the only ones to have been occupied by German troops twice in the Twentieth Century. ANGLIA is able to offer a tour which brings into sharp focus the struggle to survive during a period when finding food and keeping warm became an obsession. It considers the temptations of collaboration and the fate of those who sought to resist the Nazi regime.

Operation Market Garden – ArnhemIn the summer of 1944 Allied High Command gave its approval to an ambitious plan to secure a bridgehead across the last natural barrier to Germany – the Lower Rhine. To airborne troops was given the responsibility of securing the bridges over the canals and rivers on the Eindhoven-Arnhem road, along which the British 2nd Army would then advance. Although this operation, to be known as Market Garden, would see numerous incidences of personal heroism it would not deliver the breakthrough sought and would result in over 1,200 British soldiers losing their lives.

From Roman warfare right up to the First Gulf War, we have guides who can bring to life the developments in weaponry, army organisation and training, communication, medical provision, strategy, tactics and combat.

From Longbows to Lasers3 days, Agincourt, Waterloo & Ypres

Examining the British experience of warfare from the medieval period to the modern day, this tour begins by exploring the firepower of Henry V’s army at Agincourt, and the tactics they employed. Moving on to Waterloo, the tour then looks at the development of the grand armies of the Napoleonic age, considering the use of artillery and siege technology, and their impact on strategy and tactics. We then continue to Flanders and study the nature of Trench Warfare on the Western Front, and the new technologies and tactic that were developed to break the stalemate. Your guides will finish by comparing these themes with the computerised and high-tech warfare of the late twentieth century.

Crimea, Boer and First World War, 1854-1929 2 days, Ypres & the Somme

With trips to the Ukraine and South Africa beyond the means of most schools, ANGLIA is delighted to offer a short tour to the Western Front, incorporating comparative theory sessions focussing on these periods for students following Edexcel option C1 at A/S.

The tour itself will focus on the British experience on the Western Front, including the nature of trench warfare, medical developments, recruitment, morale and discipline and the effectiveness of strategy and tactics. Your expert guides will make comparisons between these themes and the corresponding developments during the Crimean and Second Boer Wars.

It is possible to arrange for seminars and workshops to be held during the evening at your accommodation - we would be happy to liaise with you from an early point to plan these activities.

Napoleonic Wars WaterlooThe Battle of Waterloo was a turning point in modern European history and one of the largest land battles ever fought on European soil. For the first time the Emperor Napoleon cast his military brilliance directly against the tactical skill and determination of the Duke of Wellington. The result was stunning. In a single afternoon Imperial France’s aspirations for European domination were dashed, leaving around 40,000 casualties on a field barely a mile across and three miles wide.

Given its location twelve miles south of Brussels, it is possible to visit the battlefield of Waterloo comfortably in two days from the UK. It is also possible to extend the tour to cover other sites connected with the Waterloo campaign – Quatre Bras, Ligny and Wavre – or to combine the tour with a visit to Paris to explore the themes of Napoleonic France.

Whilst discrimination and persecution have existed as long as people have walked the planet, the rapid growth of industrial power and technology allowed those in a position to abuse power to do so in previously unimaginable ways.

Parallel to this, developments in communication and media meant that for the first time mass populations were able to witness the effects of war and tyranny, whilst individuals found themselves facing the greatest challenges to their morality and code of ethics. Majdanek and Belzec Whilst for many the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex where some 1.1 million people were murdered is the epitome of a Nazi death camp, the fact is that less than 20% of the victims of the Holocaust were killed there.

On 1st November 1941 as part of Aktion Reinhard, the name given for the extermination of the Jews living in the Generalgouvernement, work began on camps at Belzec, Treblinka and Sobibor. Unlike Auschwitz-Birkenau there would be no selection process. The sole purpose of these camps was mass execution.

Cross-curricular toursHistory and CitizenshipThe link between history and citizenship training is an obvious one and in this section we feel that the study of morality, race and persecution, especially in recent times makes a visit to Auschwitz/Birkenau of huge importance. Students need to fully understand that the lessons from the formula; PREJUDICE = DISCRIMINATION = PERSECUTION = EXTERMINATION teaches us as Edmund Burke said that “evil will triumph if good men do nothing”.

History and Religious StudiesStudents studying the Holocaust can explore the reasons behind the inhumanity of mankind as well as the historically documented facts. Themes such as the Just War and multi-faith ethics as well as human moral courage in the face of adversity can be explored. Groups can compare the concept of the use of force between nations with the Christian and other faiths principles of peace, love and reconciliation.

History and LiteratureThe literature that came out of the Holocaust is a testament to those that endured and survived as well as to those who perished in their millions. As with our WW1 poetry and literature tours, to get students to stand where these events took place in the footsteps of the writers is beyond compare and will enhance and underpin their studies and take them into another, distinctive dimension.

History and Photography and Media StudiesThe Holocaust did not happen overnight; it was a process that took several years. The part played by the media and photography in this process is pivotal. Propaganda, photographic manipulation and disinformation are areas that can be explored along with broadcasting generally as a tool of propaganda and how it helped the Nazi cause by dehumanising an entire people. Auschwitz/Birkenau contains moving examples of this photographic and media manipulation.

The Battle of Hastings and the Norman ConquestIf there is one date in English history that everyone knows, it is 1066. In the space of just two weeks three major battles were fought that were to decide the fate of England.

On 14th October, on Senlac Hill at what is now Battle in Sussex, a battle took place for an incredible prize: the throne of England. By dusk that night hundreds of men lay dead, strewn across the hillside, among them the king of England. His Saxon followers were defeated, dispersed and in disarray, and the Norman victors were able to begin a programme of conquest that would soon see England under the yoke of an oppressive foreign aristocracy.

The Home Front 2010 sees the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and ANGLIA is pleased to mark this landmark occasion by focussing on the heroic efforts of ‘the few’. Between July and October 1940 the RAF fought off waves of attacks by the Luftwaffe, despite being heavily outnumbered. Their hard-fought victory saw the postponement of Hitler’s Operation Sealion, the planned invasion of Britain, and the fateful switch of focus east to the Soviet Union. For students studying the Second World War, or Britain at War, ANGLIA can combine a visit to the Cabinet War Rooms and the Imperial War Museum with a walking tour of London, visiting sites connected to the Blitz.

We are committed to ensuring that our tours comply with the latest DfE guidelines that relate to Heath and Safety on educational visits. These guidelines state:

Your LEA or governing body - should advise you to ask tour operators for a copy of their Safety Management System.

A Safety Management System - should clearly set out how a tour operator manages safety for the component parts of the visit that they will be providing. In particular, all tour operators should be able to show that they have carried out full safety checks on accomodation and transport.

As a tour operator, we can - provide details of independent checks made by qualified external organizations on our Safety Management System.

In addition we can state that all ANGLIA guides undergo CRB checks through Essex County Council’s Disclosures Unit.

These guidelines also explain that teachers taking trips abroad have a duty of care to follow the advice of their LEA or governing body and that Head Teachers should ensure that tour operators used by their school have had their credentials and accreditations verified.Our Safety Management System is helping to improve the safety standards on school tours. Our policy of giving a formal evening presentation to students, their parents and teaching staff before each residential tour goes out is a great source of reassurance to both parents and teachers alike. Very few tour operators do this, in spite of the fact that it is a specific recommendation of the DfE guidelines.

What does our Safety Management System encompass?Coach Operators – all coaches we use are subject to regular inspections, not only for their documentation but also for their safety features. Drivers are also checked for their driving experience and evidence of a criminal record.

Accommodation – all the accommodation we use complies with EU and local safety regulations. Local regulations in various Europeans countries do differ. As a result, the Directors have personally visited all the core accommodation units used by Anglia and run a rolling programme of visits by senior guides of all other accommodation.

Pre tour presentation – Prior to any residential tour, a member of ABT staff will come to the school and give an evening presentation to the students, their parents and teaching staff. This presentation gives an overall view of the aims of the tour and more specific details concerning safety, food and accommodation.

24-hour Emergency Assistance – Anglia Tours Ltd is one of the only schools tours operator which, as a matter of course, puts guides on all of its tours. In an emergency they are the first point of contact. They are supported, in turn, by a Duty Officer, available 24 hours a day on a mobile number issued to the lead teacher by their guide. Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy choose Anglia?Each of our tours is individually designed, with locations chosen in consultation with you and your team. Once you contact us you’ll be given an allocated Tour Co-ordinator who will be able to answer any questions you may have and help you organise and book your tour.

What’s different about a guided tour?The students and teachers who come on our guided tours tell us time and again that it’s our experienced guides who make the difference. Deeply knowledgeable, full of captivating stories and skilled at connecting with young people, they bring places and events to life in ways that few others can.

Can I undertake an inspection visit before I travel?Yes you can. We would be pleased to facilitate inspections visits for groups leaders travelling to destinations they have not previously visited so that they can carry out their own Risk Assessment.

How many free teacher places am I entitled to?Anglia provides 1 free teacher place for every 10 paying students on each of our tours. That said we know that some LEAs do require a higher ratio of adults to students and where this is the case we would be happy to arrange this for you.

Are excursion costs included in my tour price?We will provide you with one all inclusive price based on your specific requirements. However if you want to add any optional extras we will be happy to quote you a price for these too!

What is a collective passport and how can I get one?A collective or group passport, is an easy and cost-effective way for approved groups of students to make trips to certain European countries. You can download a copy of the application form from the ‘Directgov’ website or request a copy from the Identity and Passport Service.

Some members of my group have non-UK passports. Is this a problem?Not at all. Although it is ultimately the responsibility of the school to ensure all those traveling in their group hold the necessary documentation your Tour Co-ordinator will be happy to advise you who to contact.

Can you provide Risk Assessments?Yes we can. Anglia is committed to ensuring all our tours comply with the latest DfES guidelines that relate to Heath and Safety on educational visits. Our Safety Management System includes Risk Assessments of activities and venues included in many of our tours which we will be pleased to forward to you.

Is there an emergency contact available at all times in the UK?Yes there is. We are the only schools tours operator which, as a matter of course, puts guides on all of its tours. In an emergency they are the first point of contact. They are supported, in turn by a Duty Officer, available 24 hours a day on a mobile number issued to the lead teacher. In the unlikely event of a major emergency an incident room would be set up at the Anglia offices and manned to give fast, efficient and coordinated responses.

Are your guides CRB checked?Yes they are. At Anglia we require all our guides to hold valid Disclosure Certificates.

Can we cater for special needs and disabled passengers?Yes we can. Anglia is committed is committed to promoting and developing equality of opportunity. We ensure that all who travel with us receive the same excellent service and unique experience.

Is our money safe with Anglia Tours?Yes it is. Under EU Travel Package regulations all monies are held in a trust account until after your tour has been completed. We also hold an Air Travel Organisers Licence, granted by the Civil Aviation Authority (ATOL 6512) which protects our Air Travel Packages.
