RESTRICTED PROFILES

• Addition of Multi user profiles. Enhanced Experience.

• Users can now restrict app usage and content consumption. Parental control

• Restricted feature available on Android tablets.

BLUETOOTH SMART READY

• Devices running Android 4.3 will now support low-energy Bluetooth Smart accessories like heart rate monitors, pedometers, thermometers and many others.

• Users can now sync the low energy devices without these affecting the battery usage of the device, as per Google.

• This feature was missing on Google's mobile operating system, till now.

• Make way for Android friendly wearable tech.

DIAL PAD AUTOCOMPLETE

• Android 4.3 now adds the autocomplete feature in the dial-pad suggesting contact names or phone numbers when users start keying-in something.

• Devices running stock Android were missing it.

NOTIFICATIONS

• Now you can control and interact with the status bar notifications.

• This would allow users to control how notifications are pushed to the primary and connected devices(smart watches, fitness bands).

• Users will also be able to see all the notifications at one place.

OPEN GL ES 3.0

• Android devices now render high quality graphics in games and other apps. Google claims that Android 4.3 supports the new version of the industry standard for high performance graphics.

• Now more detailed textures, lens flare, and reflections are prominent.

• This was missing in Android 4.2.

SECURITY UPGRADES

• One of the most prominent upgrades in Android 4.3 is the introduction of SELinux.

• Mechanism for supporting access control security policies.

• A set of kernel modifications and user-space tools that can be added to various Linux distributions.

• It has been integrated into the mainline Linux kernel since version 2.6, on 8 August 2003.

• For now, SELinux is configured in Permissive mode only, meaning that policies are not enforced, and violations are just being logged.

DAC V/S MAC

Discretionary Access Control (DAC) :• Each user decides which of his own files is accessed (read, written, or executed) by

other users

• In Android systems, each app is assigned a different user ID, thereby isolating and protecting the application data from all other applications

Mandatory Access Control (MAC) :• It is based on security labels.

• Subjects are given a security clearance and data objects are given a security classification.

• Hence, SELinux allows varying levels of trust to each app and dictates what kind of data an app can access. Moreover, the superuser also needs to abide by the security policies.

KEYCHAINS AND KEYSTOREPROVIDERS

• Earlier, attackers who could root a device were able to retrieve cryptographic credentials from any device and use them to gain unauthorized access to highly sensitive networks.

• Android 4.3 adds new system calls that allows developers to bind encryption keys used to access sensitive information and resources to a certain piece of hardware.

• The private keys can not be exported to another device, even if the device is compromised (stolen/rooted).

SIMPLIFIED SETUP WIZARD

• Now a user can change the information that was keyed-in during the first boot of the device.

• Faster user switching -switching users from the lock screen is now faster.

• Disabled apps tab has now been introduced.

BLUETOOTH AVRCP

• Google devices running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean can sync with Bluetooth enabled car stereos and offer additional functionality.

• The Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 version allows stereos to display metadata such as song names when music is being streamed from an Android 4.3 device.

Page 12: Android 4.3 jellybean

• Google has now increased the location accuracy of Android devices by allowing location scanning via Wi-Fi.

• It now allows apps to get location data through Wi-Fi even when Wi-Fi is set to off and not being used for data access.

KEYBOARD AND INPUT• Android 4.3 comes with an

upgraded algorithm for tap-typing recognition that makes text input easier while chatting via messages or even while composing emails.

• It also brings a new emoji keyboard.

• The update also adds lower latency input for gamepad buttons and joysticks.

• Android is now translated in Africans, Amharic (አአአአ), Hindi ( Swahili (Kiswahili), and Zulu (IsiZulu). Hebrew, Arabic, and other RTL (right-to-left) -
