Amazing Grace

• Amazing Grace is a song that we hear and sing often.

• But how many of us know the story behind that great song?

Amazing Grace

• Amazing Grace dates all the way back to the 1700s.

• It was written by English poet and clergyman John Newton.

Amazing Grace

• He delivers a message that forgiveness and redemption is possible regardless of the sins people commit.

• The soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God.

Amazing Grace

• Newton wrote these words from personal experience.

• It was his autobiography in verse.

Amazing Grace

• John Newton was like the words in the song - a wretch who needed to be saved.

• He was a mean-spirited man who treated people with contempt.

Amazing Grace

• Not surprisingly, he participated in the slave trade.

• On night, the vessel he was on was battered by a terrible storm.

• It was so violent that he became frightened enough to call out to God for mercy.

Amazing Grace

• That moment was the beginning of his spiritual conversion.

• One thing he did have, though, was a praying mother.

Amazing Grace

• She died when he was only seven years old, but in those few years she taught him Bible verses and prayed fervently for him.

• Those prayers outlived her.

Amazing Grace

• Romans 3:23 reminds us that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

• Our sins may be great and known by a lot of people, or they may be subtle.

• We may be lost and not know where to turn.

Amazing Grace

• But take heart. This is why Jesus came to earth - to die for our sins.

• We can accept him as our personal Savior and that same "Amazing Grace" will be extended to us.
