Waste/Digestate Biogas Electricity Heat

The Agrivert AD Process

➊ Local Authority and commercial food wastes are delivered to an enclosed reception building where solid waste is tipped into a bunker.

➋ Food waste and packaging are mechanically separated in a hammermill. The separated food waste is stored and de-gritted in a buffer tank and the packaging is collected in a skip.

➌ Food waste is pasteurised at 70°C for one hour using renewable heat generated on-site.

➍ Pasteurised food waste is pumped to a primary digester, where organic matter starts to break down, producing biogas.

➎ Digestate is transferred to the secondary digester where it continues to break down and generate biogas.

➏ Whole digestate is finally pumped to storage until required by farmers. Any residual biogas produced in a storage tank is collected.

➐ Digestate is collected via tanker and used as an organic bio-fertiliser on local farmland.

➑➒ Biogas produced during digestion (and storage) is burned in CHP units to generate heat and electricity. 8% of electricity is used to power the AD facility and rest is sold to the National Grid.

➓ Heat, generated as a by-product, is used to heat the pasteurisers and digesters.

ReliabilityRobust plant design and extensive operational experience has resulted in excellent facility availability.

Reliability of waste treatment is achieved through:

• Simple, flexibleandrobustsystems: proven to process a wide range of packaged and unpackaged wastes

• Biologicalstability: achieved through large tanks, long retention times

• Bufferstoragecapacity: allowing continued receipt of waste even during maintenance of downstream equipment

• Operationalexperience: enabling Agrivert to anticipate and overcome issues and thereby deliver seamless waste management services

• Simplicityofdesign: minimal moving parts.

Planning consentAgrivert has a skilled in-house planning team. We have achieved numerous complex permissions for AD plants, many in green belt.

Agrivert follows a comprehensive communication strategy and engages with local communities from a very early stage.

Regulatory complianceAgrivert processes are designed and operated to comply with UK regulation including:

• PAS110

• Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR)

• Permitting Regulations 2010.

BiofertilisersAgrivert has recycled over 6 million tonnes of organic fertiliser since 1994.

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION

Agrivert is a market leader in Anaerobic Digestion (AD), renewable energy generation, composting, and the treatment of sewage sludge. We provide sustainable, competitive organic waste management solutions.

OverviewAgrivert has been treating and recycling organic waste in the UK since 1994. We combine proven technology with operational experience and innovative design to deliver reliable solutions for the treatment and recycling of biodegradable municipal waste, commercial food waste and sewage sludge.

Design, build and operateAgrivert designs, builds and operates AD plants for the treatment of food waste. Our first 50,000 tpa AD facility in Oxfordshire was built and commissioned in 2010 on time and to budget.

Agrivert provides:

• Turnkey AD solutions

• Simplified plant operation and automation of systems

• Reception and storage systems

• Depackaging systems (ABPR and PAS110 compliant)

• Conveyance and feed systems

• Pumping and storage systems.

Operating experienceAgrivert owns and operates commercial scale food waste AD facilities. Our operating experience enables us to design facilities that are reliable, efficient and low maintenance.

Agrivert offers the following operational attributes:

• Reliable plant operation and waste management services

• Sustainable markets for digestate.

Proven performanceThe performances of Agrivert AD plants and systems are proven in commercial scale food waste applications.

Key to the success of our AD plant design has been:

• Rigorous review of existing designs and technologies over a six year R&D period.

• Appointing AD technology partners with proven systems operating across Europe

• Tailoring our equipment specifications and plant design to suit the requirements of the UK food waste market.

• Evolving our designs by implementing lessons learnt through operation of our own plants.

A 2.1MW Agrivert plant is proven to operate with an average output of 97% maximum energy generation capacity and produce nearly 18,000 MWh of electricity per year.

Feedstock flexibilityAgrivert AD systems can process a wide range of waste feedstocks, without requiring alteration for different waste compositions or packaging materials.

Agrivert versatile AD systems can process:

• Local Authority waste

• Commercial packaged waste

• ABP materials (category 3)

• Liquid wastes

• Agricultural wastes

• Energy crops.

SustainabilityAgrivert AD plants are operationally, economically and environmentally sustainable.

We achieve this by:

• Consistently delivering reliable waste treatment services

• Designing flexible, robust systems with low operating costs

• Producing low odour, high nutrient value biofertiliser products

• Securing long term local markets for biofertilisers

• Reducing local need for costly fossil fuel derived fertilisers, saving farmers money and reducing greenhouse gas emissions

• Maximising renewable energy generation through long digester residence times and low plant parasitic loads

• Diverting food waste from landfill.

Low operating costsAgrivert combines low operating costs with high renewable energy outputs to deliver competitive, value for money waste treatment solutions.

Low operating cost is achieved through:

• Innovative design

• Low staffing numbers

• Low electrical parasitic load

• Low maintenance costs

• Securing local markets for products.
