Once, there was a lonely little boy who wanted so much to be adopted.
but no one ever paid him any attention at the adop-tion match parties. People never gave him a second look. They just passed him by.
No one ever called him by his name, no one even bothered to find out what his name really was. They just referred to him as, “Oh you know him that’s just
“What’s His Name.”

No one knew that this little bright eye curly headed boy with the big, sad brown eyes was just very, very shy. He was so lonely, not unfriendly or slow like they said he was.
Each day, “What’s His Name” would daydream as he stood looking out of the window of the foster home he lived in. His big brown eyes were always glistening with hidden tears. All he ever wanted was to be loved and have a “forever” family.
He also wanted a very best friend who would see just how wonderful he was.
He longed to hear a best friend say, “Can Michael, Bobby or Larry come out to play?” Gee! That would be a dream come true he thought to himself.
No one understood that “What’s His Name” was just waiting for one friendly person to greet him with
a smile and a hello.
11
He wasn’t slow he just needed a smile or a friendly person to say, “young man I am going to be your friend” No he wasn’t slow just shy and oh so lonely.
Then one day a special couple came in smiling and holding hands. The man and lady never had any children of their own and were looking for that one special child to share their love with.
13
He was short with a balding head and a big wide friendly smile, and he greeted everyone with a hardy hand shake. The man looked just like “What’s His Name” imagined a daddy would look like.
His wife was petite and had curly black hair, soft brown skin and the sweetest look on her face. Her eyes seemed to twinkle when she smiled as she warmly hugged everyone she met. “What’s His Name” imagined her delicate little hands making the best homemade pies, cakes and delicious cookies.
15
“What’s His Name’s” eyes followed them around every inch of the room. They walked around greeting boys and girls who also hoped to someday be adopted.
16
Mrs. Scott, the worker in charge of the match party showed the couple around to meet the little boys and girls.
19
Not once did she introduce them to ”What’s His Name.” She just kept moving them away from him saying, “We have so many other little ones for you to meet, like little Jimmy here. Now he’s a fine young man.”
“What’s His Name” sat on the teddy bear chair holding on to his favorite stuffed rabbit, whose eyes and nose had long since been “loved” off. He was hoping that they would smile at him and say hello. He just knew that they would be a wonderful mommy and daddy.
He felt that anyone they chose would be special. How he wished that someone would be him.
As they passed him by, he smiled the biggest and the brightest smile he could ever smile. His cheeks tingled because he wanted to make sure they saw his best smile.
Mrs. Scott introduced the couple to a little boy who giggled a lot. But the woman with the soft brown skin and curly hair stopped to look at “What’s His Name.”
Suddenly the man turned to see just who his wife was looking at.
He smiled because “What’s His Name’s” big brown eyes clearly spoke to his heart. The man with the bald head walked towards “What’s His Name.”
Mrs. Scott tried to stop him by saying, “Sir, excuse me sir, you really don’t want to meet him. He’s not very friendly and we think he might be a little slow.”
He shook the little giggler’s hand and walked over to “What’s His Name”.
But the man and his wife didn’t hear a word Mrs. Scott said. She went right up to “What’s His Name” and said,” “Hello young man, my, you have such big beautiful sad eyes. We are Mr. and Mrs. Williams and we are so happy to meet you. What’s your name young man?”
Thank you it’s nice to meet you too. but I don’t have a name. They just call me “What’s His Name.”
Mr. Williams spoke to “What’s His Name. “ “Well that is just simply nonsense. That’s no name for such a fine young man like yourself, but you will have a name. I promise you!
The woman with the soft brown skin kneeled down and kissed him right on his cheek. His felt as if his heart would beat right out of his chest he was so happy. They both smiled and walked away waving good bye to him. He smiled inside and hoped he would see them again.
The very next week the couple visited him at the foster home. The following visit they went to the zoo. He never dreamed he would have so much fun.
They came every week for months with plans for something special for him to do every time. They went to the library, the Science Center, bowling, baseball and basketball games. Each time he had more fun than the time before.
Then one special day he had more fun than ever. He rode on a pony in the park, ate hot dogs, two slices of double cheese pepperoni pizza, popcorn, and he drank his favorite drink in the whole wide red cherry kool aid.
He was having so much fun he hoped they would forget it almost time to go. The watch they had given him said loud and clear “It’s six o’clock.” His heart sank. By six, they always started packing up everything and would take him back to the foster home. This day was something special and he would never forget the fun he had.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams and “What’s His Name” climbed into the green station wagon and drove down streets he didn’t recognize. He thought to himself, “I hope we aren’t lost because he knew his way back to the foster home.
They drove up to a neat brown brick house with a bright green awning on the porch. The house looked well cared for with love.
“What’s his Name” was very curious and ask them, “Why are we stopping here?” Mr. and Mrs. Williams only smiled and said come inside.
The kitchen was painted a bright yellow and the smell of fresh chocolate chip cookies was in the air.
In the living room there was a real fire place which made the room warm and cozy and marshmallows could be toasted.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams said to him, “Come upstairs we have something special to show you.”
They took him into a room that was the most amazing room he could have ever imagine. It was filled with toy trucks, Legos®, race cars, airplanes, and books.
On the bed was a new stuffed rabbit with a pink nose and ears that stood straight up and a bright blue ribbon was tied in a perfect bow around its neck.
On the walls were pictures of baseball, basketball and football players, and pennants from all the best teams. He looked around the room his big brown eyes were all aglow. “wow whose room is this” he asked. “This is like something I once dreamed of”
Mrs. Williams gently sat him on her lap and as she spoke tears of joy ran down her cheeks. She looked at him with love in her eyes and she took a deep breath. “Robbie, she said” that’s going to be your new nick name son. “She happily told him. Robert Hanson Wil-liams, II, is whom this room belongs to and you son are now Robert Hanson Williams, II Welcome to your new home!”
Robbie couldn’t believe his ears. He jumped up and down on the bed and squeezed the rabbit. “The cars and trucks are all mine too?” He asked with excitement. “Yes Robbie you are officially our adopted son and all this is yours.”
After all the excitement of the day was over, Robbie put on his new PJ’s with all the Disney characters on it and he hugged himself.
He spoke in an unsure whispery voice. “Mommy, Daddy.” “Mommy, Daddy,” they both repeated in unison, “Oh my good-ness, doesn’t that sound nice.” They looked at him with love in their eyes both laughing as they replied, “Yes, son!”
Robbie repeated again “Mommy and Daddy,” in a big happy voice.
“I always pray before I go to sleep. Is it alright if I pray now?”
They looked at him with joy on their faces. His “new” mommy be-gan to cry. “Oh yes son, yes it’s wonderful. God has truly heard our prayers that you would finally be our son. So yes, we must pray everyday and night a prayer of gratitude for this day.”
The three of them knelt together holding hands as they prayed. Robbie’s new daddy prayed, “Thank you Father for our new family and all your blessings.” Robbie said with pride, “Thank you for my Mommy and Daddy and especially my new rabbit.”
They squeezed his hands and hugged each other.
Robbie felt so sleepy he crawled into the big warm bed that was covered with the warmest
comforter he had ever felt. He slept more peacefully than he ever knew he could.
The next morning he jumped up and looked around. He whispered to himself, “Gosh, I wasn’t dreaming, I’m really, really here!” When he heard a soft voice call out, “Robbie, are you awake yet? Breakfast is ready!”
He ate the most wonderful breakfast of hot pancakes with creamy butter, sweet maple syrup, delicious meaty strips of crispy bacon, cheesy eggs, apple juice and a glass of cold milk. “Umm yum what a breakfast”!
His new daddy said, “Son I have another special surprise for you. A shiny new red bike for you to ride.” He couldn’t believe his eyes. It was a brand new three wheeler bike with racing strips with red and white streamers on the handles. He was so excited, “all this” and a name too, he thought to himself”
Just as he was about to ride his shiny new bike, a little boy about six years old approached him. “Hi, my name is Willie. What’s your name?” “Hi Willie, I’m Robert Hanson Williams, II and I’m adopted.” He happily shouted. “Hi Robert Hanson Williams, II, I’m adopted too. You wanna be my friend?” Robbie anxiously shouted, “Yes!”
The two new friends rolled over and over in the grass laughing.
At last, “What’s His Name” had a name and a best friend.
“
