Accel Project Directory Introduction
Introduction to Accel:
Accel is an in-company training initiative aimed at accelerating skills of people at all levels within firms in Ireland. It provides a unique opportunity for enterprises, management and staff to rapidly upskill workers to provide career progression and employability and respond to specific competitive challenges.
It recognises human resources, skills and capability of people as a leading factor in every company and in all sectors and seeks to provide a new and significant opportunity for enterprises.
Accel is an initiative of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and is managed by Skillnets Services Ltd on its behalf. The programme is funded by the European Social Fund and the National Training Fund. Up to e16 million will be allocated to approved projects for the period 2006-2008. Currently 55 Accel Projects are being funded under the Accel Programme.

Driven by the decline (25% p.a.) in IT graduates in Ireland since 2001, the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs is predicting that by 2009, the supply of computing graduates will be less than half the numbers needed. In response, the programme will deliver training, all of which will be directly relevant to the particular nature of the ICT sector. IT companies involved include Microsoft, Ericsson, Intel, IBM and HP, giving a mix of large and small companies.
