Chandri and Geethakka make district chairman's visit memorable

The much awaited day for all the members of IWC of Mysore Midtown had finally arrived. Yes, it was our Chairman's visit on Friday 17th October.

With members in good numbers, we picked our District Chairman Mrs.Vinitha Satish from her residence and proceeded towards our 1st project at Ashakirana hospital - ray of hope for HIV / AIDS patients. A 10 minutes video was played about the institution. An induction stove and vessels were given to a needy staff of Ashakirana. From there, we headed towards our Rotary Midtown Academy where we were welcomed by mesmerising dance performed by young kids of RMA. Later we witnessed the showcase of talents by the children of RMA in the form of Yoga, a skit and various models of science and beautiful art and craft works .An amount was given to the Rangayana artiste for the training she is imparting on the RMA students . From there, we processed towards RCL where baby samosas and pudina juice was waiting for us as the refreshment. Our club Assembly started with chairman shooting up questions and all the office bearers had passed the test with distinction.

Suspense of the day was by our MCs, PDC Chandrika Raghu and PP Geetha Krishna, who stole the show and the entire proceeding had a Midas touch. Geethakka, portraying as an upcoming artist and PDC Chandrika, who played the role of assistant, had the audience reeling with laughter. While Geethakka took us to music of yesteryears, PDC Chandrika lit up the scene with her one liners.

Melodious invocation of Vachana by Vimala , Sudha and Annet Anusha was followed by Innerwheel prayer by Saba Suryani in her maiden appearance on stage. President Premilla gave her welcome speech and thanked all the inner wheel members for their support who helped her come out

of her closed shell. Messages were read out by Secretary Lavanya, where many had wished from nook & corner of the district. Highlight of the day was our MCs inviting Rtn.Venkatesh to release the bulletin. Mr Venkatesh was taken aback by the surprise element, and did the honours of releasing the bulletin. Secretary's report by Lavanya was lively. Past president Uma Vivek introduced the chairman & Projects for the day were read out by Jabeen Farooq .New members Komala and Ashwini, introduced by Kusuma and yours truly, were inducted, further strengthening the club.

Address by the Chairman was very informative .She appreciated Premilla and team for their wonderful work and progress made by the club. She touched upon TEACH programme and VIBRANT objectives & ended with beautiful suggestion on developing positivity. Goody bag with lots of gifts from each member was given to the chairman as a token of love. Vote of thanks by yours truly brought the curtains down on the lively afternoon. Delicious spread was waiting for lunch. It was a Diwali Bonanza for Inner Wheel Club of Mysore Midtown. Kudos to the entire team for having made it one of the memorable days . - Chaitra Mohan

POLIOBECOMES'PUBLICHEALTHEMERGENCY'INPAKISTANASNUMBEROFCASESSOARS

A s w o r l d h e a l t h o f f i c i a l s s t r u g g l e t o respond to the Ebola epidemic, Pakistan has passed a grim milestone in i ts efforts to combat another major g lobal health crisis: the fight against polio.

Over the weekend, Pakistan logged its 200th

new polio case of 2014, the nation's highest transmission rate in more than a dozen years. The spread has alarmed Pakistani and international health experts and is prompting fresh doubt about the country's ability to combat this or future disease outbreaks.

By Tuesday, the number of new polio cases in Pakistan stood at 202, and officials are bracing for potentially dozens of other cases by year's end. Pakistan now accounts for 80 percent of global cases and is one of only three countries at risk of exporting the disease outside its borders, according to the World Health Organization.

“It's an emergency, a public health emergency,” said Ayesha Raza Farooq, the polio eradication coordinator for Pakistan's government. “We want to limit the virus outside of our boundaries and want to work to control it in our boundaries, but it's certainly a very challenging situation ahead.”

Pakistan has struggled for years to shed its title as one of the last remaining countries with an active polio virus, mostly because of troubles it faces in vaccinating children. In far-flung areas of the country, some parents and religious leaders are skeptical of the vaccine, requiring considerable face-to-face outreach by vaccination teams.

But the Pakistani Taliban and other Islamist militants have waged a brutal campaign against those teams, killing more than 50 health workers and security officials since 2012. The attacks began after it was discovered that the CIA had used a vaccination campaign to gain information about Osama bin Laden's whereabouts.
