... so easy to use inthe parlor. Lonnie Palmer

Lonnie Palmer (left ) has 275 cows at Pigeon Cove Farms, Warfordsburg, Pa. and works to keep SCC at 140,000.

Mas-D-Tec is a great screening tool; so easy to use in the parlor, he says. Mas-D-Tec and Udder Comfort are part of our quality management.

...keep mastitis at bay. MaryEllen Row

Mas-D-Tec has been extremely helpful checking for subclinical mastitis, says Mary Ellen Row (right), of Row Family Farm, Osseo, Wis., milking 130. Ive been using it a lot to keep mastitis at bay, especially during this rainy season we are having in Wisconsin. Extra mud never helps the cows and Mas-D-Tec is a quick and easy way to stay on top of SCC. I check conductivity on any cow I think has a problem and defi nitely fresh cows.

... easily able to monitor what we are doing.

Bob TraynorTh e Mas-D-Tec is Bob Traynors go-to item for monitoring 120 Holsteins milking at Honeycrest Farms, Spring Valley, Wis. Our Mas-D-Tec monitoring and

consistent use of Udder Comfort for fresh cows and prefresh heifers have played a big role in getting SCC under 200,000, says Bob (left ). We check fresh cows a few days aft er calving to get a baseline. Cows with high readings get Udder Comfort aft er each of the next 3 to 4 milkings and we re-check. It pays.

    ... pinpoints problems. Courtney Biggs

We do not want to be without this tool, says Courtney Biggs (right), manager of Chapel Hill Creamery Farm, Easton, Md. We use the Mas-D-Tec to check fresh cows and any on the DHI hot list. It pinpoints problems, so we can make decisions and take action.

IDENTIFYchanges in milk conductivity linked to changes in somatic cell counts (SCC).

MONITOR suspect individuals and cows freshening between DHIA tests.

    MAS-D-TEC measures conductivity

    - FAST - to identify affected quarters.Operates on a 9-volt battery (included).

Easy as 1-2-3!1. Strip small amount (1 or 2 squirts) of pre- or post-milk from 1 quarter into the funnel at top of unit. Wipe teats before stripping the sample.

    2. Wait a few seconds for LED display to light up. A reading in White: no concern. A reading in Red: suspect mastitis. Repeat previous steps with the next quarter to be checked.

    3. The whole process takes 5 seconds per quarter. The introduction of each new milk sample effortlessly purges previous sample.

    Why these producersrely on Mas-D-Tec

" OUR MACDON WINDROWERS HAVE SAVED US A LOT OF TIME. WE CAN LAY A FIELD DOWN QUICKLY BY CUTTING ALFALFA AT UP TO 14mph.

The re department was able to save the milkhouse and pulled the roof off the old dou-ble-6 swing parlor. I was concerned how we were going to milk the cows that morning, Oyster said. But they were able to save enough of the parlor and put poles in where we needed and a makeshift roof over it so we could keep using it. Neighbors came to help the Oysters. Their help was appreci-ated, Oyster said. It was un-believable. After deciding to contin-ue dairy farming, the Oysters knew they had to rebuild. There was an open spot not far from the barn that would be the perfect place. My intention for that spot before the re was to actually build a new parlor, Oyster

Conti nued from OYSTERS | Page 34

said. I dont think I would have built one at all if we wouldnt have had the re. Oyster started looking at different parlor set ups to nd the one that worked best for him. We wanted to look at as many as we could to make the right decision for us, Oyster said. The family decided on the double-9 swing parallel parlor. I really like the paral-lel parlors, Oyster said. It is harder to get kicked by a cow in that set up. Plus it was sim-pler and saved on space. Crews started to build the new parlor building three weeks after the re on Sept. 1, 2004, which contained a break room, laundry room, of ce and milkhouse. But the Oysters built their own parlor. It was simple enough to

make that we did it ourselves, Oyster said. They even used some of the same units, but had to get three more new ones. They also replaced the vacuum pump, some pulsators and added a second 1,000-gallon bulk tank. While building the new barn, the Oysters built it to pre-vent a future re. It made us more cons about those types of things, Oyster said. We made sure the wiring was done safer and no wiring was in the attics. In the meantime, the Oys-ters were milking in their origi-nal xed up parlor until Dec. 4, 2004. It was cold before we started milking the cattle in the new parlor, Oyster said. Be-fore, we were milking in the great outdoors since there were no walls on most of the origi-nal parlor.

The following summer, the family tore down the old parlor and milkhouse to build an additional 56-stall freestall barn with a maternity pen in its place. The new freestall barn also contained some freestalls for the older heifers. It works well for them, Oyster said. It helps train them in, so they are used to the stalls when they enter the milk-ing herd. Since then, the family has also built a calf barn and con-verted their old commodity barn into a heifer barn. To re-place the converted barn, the Oysters built a different com-modity shed and hay shed. For a while, the family was milking up to 160 cows, but re-cently sold close to 100 cows, bringing them back down to about 66 cows. The barns were getting

too full and we have close to85 heifers calving in during the next couple months, Oystersaid. We had to make room for them. Overall, Oyster has been pleased with his newer barnand parlor. There are small things I would have changed. We were only three months away frombeing out of debt before the re, so it set us back that way. But I am happy with how it turned out, Oyster said. Its more user friendly and orga-nized with more room. Despite the destruction of the re, Oyster believes it all happened for a reason. A re is something you never want to have happen on the farm, Oyster said. Butfor us, the end result of our re turned out better than we thought. It was a blessing indisguise.

MISSY MUSSMAN/ DAIRY STARInside the new freestall barn, Oyster added freestalls for the older heifers to get them used to the stalls before they enter the milking herd.

40 cowsTell us about your family: My husband, Neal, and I have 5 children- Vir-ginia (23), Brock (21), Sydney (19), Elise (18) and Audrey (11).Tell us about your farm: We milk 40 cows and farm 280 acres. We con-verted to organic farming in 1997 and started shipping milk to Organic Val-ley in 2000.Whats the busiest time of day for you? Mornings are busiest with milk-ing and feeding calves and cows, then getting meals planned and getting the housework started. How much time do you spend doing farmwork compared to housework? The majority of my time is spent outside. What do you do in your freetime and why? We have a large garden so much of the summer is spent trying to keep up with the weeds and freeze and can vegetables. I would like to nd time to play piano again.Whats the best thing about farming? Being able to raise our kids. Al-though we will have only one left at home this year, being there in the morn-ings when they get on the bus and at night when they get home has always been an important time for me. When you look back on your life, what do you want to be remembered for? That I was responsible, caring, and honest and raised our kids to have the same morals.Do you have any ideas that could make farming easier for you and all farming women? As the kids are almost all off to college and on to other careers, Im thinking it would have been a good idea to have put in a request for more boys since we only have one and strategically timed them so there would always be a replacement.Tell us your most memorable experience while dairy farming. Christmas Eve 2010, we were just about done milking and heard a loud noise. Sydney went to check the shed attached to the barn and (you guessed it) the roof had collapsed. So instead of enjoying an evening with the kids opening Christ-mas gifts and watching A Christmas Story, we spent the next four hours moving cattle with ashlights and gates. Fortunately, we only lost one heifer.
