E3 has come and gone once again, so it looks like it’s about that time to discuss which games

we all can’t wait to get our grubby little hands on. And since I’ve got nothing better to do with

my life, I figured what the hell? Why not make a list of what games I’m personally hyped up

about? Who knows, you might even be a little bit surprised by what made/didn’t make the list!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’m really not that into the whole zombie thing. I’m not

exactly sure why, but it probably has something to do with those D-bags that used to shoot me

with Nerf guns while “hunting zombies” in college. Throwing my personal hatred aside though, I

was actually really impressed by Zombie U at E3.

At first, I didn’t really think that much of it. ‘Just another zombie survival game’, I assured

myself. Once they started showing off how the game actually utilizes the Wii U’s game pad

though, that’s when I realized the beauty of Zombie U . You use the game pad for everything

from going through your inventory to hacking doors, but it wasn’t so much what you did on the

touch screen that got me, it was how it fit into the whole scheme things.

For instance, imagine the hectic-ness of having to look down at your touchscreen to hack a

door. As you’re sitting there using your game-pad to hack, you aren’t really able to pay

attention to the TV, so you have no idea what’s going on around you. There could be zombies

right behind you for all you know. Hell, maybe you did know that you were being chased, and

that just adds to that helpless feeling that I’m sure you would get if zombies were really chasing

you.

I’m sure they know the feeling. Bastards.

Will Zombie U sell me a Wii U when it comes out later this year? By itself, probably not. But, if

I do pick one up, you can bet your ass that this will be one of the games I come home with.

Either way, this game excited me enough to find a place on this list. Which is almost as exciting

as the fact that I got through an entire couple paragraphs talking about zombies without making

a bad bath-salts joke.

I’ll be honest with you here, I’m really not excited that they replaced Michael Ironside’s voice as

Same Fisher. That sucks. I’m marginally excited about the single player and co-op

campaigns. It’s Splinter Cell, I’m sure it’ll be great. What really has me excited though, beyond

anything, is the fact that they’re bringing back Spies vs. Mercs. It may not seem like much, but

it’s such a fun little multiplayer game to play with a couple friends every once in a while,

especially when there’s nothing else going on.

Of course, there were some cool new features shown off for the single player. It was revealed

after the conference that you can customize your suit to tailor to your play style. For instance, if

you’re more of a run and gun type player, you can equip things that will let you absorb more

damage. If you’re more of a stealthy dude though, you can equip things like shoes that make

less noise to sneaking around a bit easier. I thought that was a pretty cool concept.

And don’t forget, there’s always the Kinect voice recognition which allows you to get an enemy’s

attention by shouting at them . You know, normally I would voice my displeasure about the

Kinect becoming nothing more than a glorified microphone for most of the games that I

consider enjoyable. However, being able to swear at NPCs in games nowadays, and them

actually reacting to it is well worth the money in my opinion.

How in the world could Watch Dogs not make this list? In all honesty, was anyone really

expecting this game to look as good as it did? When the demo first started, I sure as hell

wasn’t. I was all like:

“What the hell is this crap? I Think I’ll skip this one.”

Then, a couple minutes into it, when the main character started to hack people’s cell phones to

try to find his target:

“You know what? Call me crazy, but this game doesn’t look half bad. I might check it out.”

And then finally, after he blew out the street lights and started killing people:

“Oh my god, this game looks sick! Must buy.”

If you read those quotations in reverse order, it’s eerily similar to any relationship that I’ve ever

been in.

Watch Dogs was the first new IP that I saw at E3 this year that had me legitimately excited.

Everything else up to that point was either pretty underwhelming or was just a rehash of the

same old stuff (Of course, at that point Sony hadn’t had their press conference yet either). So

yeah, maybe it’s easy to get hyped up about Watch Dogs. From what I’ve seen so far though,

this game totally deserves it.

Watch Dogs totally reminds me of a mix between Grand Theft Auto and maybe a game like

Splinter Cell, which are two awesome franchises in my opinion. It’s all open world with missions

and such, but with the twist of being able to hack everything around you. It’s just such a cool

and unique looking game. Oh yeah, and if it didn’t look good enough as it was, there’s also

supposed to be a multiplayer too. Need I say more?

2. SimCity

PDFmyURL.com

Page 7: 5 Most Impressing Games at E3 2012

Me, a nut- job? Ha! Would a nut- job put SimCity at number 2 of a “T op 5 Games of E3″ list?

(Please, don’t answer that.)

Call me whatever you want, but SimCity will be the game that finally forces me into

buying/building a new PC. Starcraft 2 didn’t do it. Diablo 3 didn’t do it. Hell, even Skyrim and

Battlefield 3 didn’t do it. Although, if they weren’t also released on the Xbox 360 and PS3

Break, they definitely would have. It’s about time too, because my computer, if you can even

call it that, really isn’t built for gaming (and it wasn’t when it was purchased 8 years ago either).

*Update: It was actually the smoke coming out of my computer while writing this article that

forced me to upgrade. That’s one big reason why this story is so late.

So, what is it that persuaded me into finding a home for SimCity on this list, and near the top no

less? I’ll do you guys a favor and spare you the nostalgic yet sad stories of me spending

countless hours playing SimCity 2000 and 3000 as a kid. What I will do though, is rave about

how excited I am about the multiplayer.

I’ve always loved SimCity, and being able to play with some friends is great and all that. But,

imagine how deep the strategy of it all could be. EA stated at their press conference that for

the first time, choices that you make will not only affect you, but also neighboring cities. What

happens if someone you’re playing with is not only struggling, but weighing you down as well?

Do you reach out and help them? Do you maybe make some schemes and deals with some

other cities in an attempt to get that player kicked out of office? Do you make decisions that

PDFmyURL.com

Page 8: 5 Most Impressing Games at E3 2012

benefit everyone as a whole, or do you do you make decisions that gives your city more of an

edge, while bringing the others down? Sounds pretty sweet to me.

1. The Last of Us

The whole post-apocalyptic genre is another thing that I’m usually not too big on… Probably

because I can’t imagine a world without me in it. But go figure, The Last of Us was another

game that thoroughly impressed me, and possibly the most too.

What can I say about this game? At first it looks like your typical, 3rd person, action-

adventure, Uncharted clone. The demo at E3 was really well done though, the way it got your

blood pumping was almost movie- like. But that’s the thing, it wasn’t a movie, or a cutscene, or

anything even scripted in any way. It was footage of actual non-scripted gameplay that we

saw. Words really can’t do it justice, so for those of you who still haven’t seen the demo yet, or

for those of us weirdos (like me) who enjoy watching it multiple times, here it is:

God, I get all giddy every time I watch it.

There really isn’t that much more I can say about The Last of Us, because the demo pretty

much speaks for itself. Obviously Naughty Dog is developing it, which by itself should be more

than enough to get the hype machine going. Like I said though, what really blows my mind is

how intense that 7 or so minute video was, and supposedly none of it was even scripted. If all

of this is true, then I’m going to be on the edge of my seat from the second I start this game.

Honorable Mention: Halo 4

You know, I usually hate it when lists have honorable mentions, but I couldn’t help it. I probably

would have tried to find a spot on the list for Halo 4, but I feel like I didn’t really see enough to

warrant replacing any of these other great games (and not be called a fan-boy).

It seems like quite a few gamers have already written off the Halo series. I guess it’s easy to

expect a long lasting franchise like Halo to suffer a fate similar to other older IPs–rehash, after

rehash of recycled content. Not only that, but the new 343 Studios is supposed to take over

where the great Bungie left off. That’s a pretty tall order.

Either way, It seems like 343 is doing their best to try to freshen up their adopted franchise. Will

it end up being enough? I think it is, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Fom what I saw

from their quick little demo at E3, things look like they’re heading in the right direction.

Honorable Mention: Beyond: Two Souls

PDFmyURL.com

Page 10: 5 Most Impressing Games at E3 2012

I couldn’t end this list without at least mentioning the new IP from the creators of Heavy Rain.

The concept of the game looks pretty interesting, and if Quantic Dream is building off of their

previous award winning title, then I have a hard time believing that it will be anything short of

amaz ing.

The facial features, graphics, and acting all look outstanding from the little that we actually got

to see from Beyond. So why did it just miss making the list? Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really

100% sure what was going on from what we saw at E3. At first, I thought that the demo footage

that we saw was just a cinematic, but Quantic Dream says it was actual gameplay. Maybe

they just hid the HUD, and different actions were appearing around the main character like in

Heavy Rain? It’s all just guess work though. So even though I am really excited for Beyond, I

feel like I need a little bit more info before I can put it on the list.

Wrapping Up.Like most years, this year’s E3 had it’s ups and downs. Other than Watch Dogs, and the fact

that it looked freakin’ awesome, there really weren’t any huge surprises. I suppose that as the

internet, media, and gaming industry continues to grow, it’s just going to get harder and harder

to keep secrets about big releases nowadays. I don’t want to say I was disappointed, but I was

really hoping to see some sort of Smash Bros announcement for the Wii U, or maybe a big

surprise from Microsoft. I think Sony and Ubisoft’s conferences were pretty damn good though,

which kind of evens it out.
