For many thousands of years, the Okanagan Val-ley was the undisputed home of the Interior Sal-ish. Early in the 19th century, fur traders usednative trails along Okanagan Lake to export fursfrom the area to the outside world. By the1860’s, gold discoveries had brought miners andmissionaries to the valley. Settlers soon followedand land was pre-empted for ranches in Cold-stream, Vernon, and Okanagan Landing. Wagonroads replaced the old pack trails, and with thearrival of a branch line of the CPR in 1892, set-tlers were able to reach the larger markets out-side the Okanagan Valley. Improvedtransportation ledto increased immi-gration and soonthe large rancheswere being subdivided into smallerholdings. Majorirrigation schemesallowed for the in-tensive planting oforchards and fieldcrops. After a majorpopulation boombetween 1907 and1912, rumours of war curbed the influx of Euro-pean capital into the Okanagan and the majorland companies experienced financial collapse.
Vernon had been a centre for military trainingexercises since 1908, and as WWI progressed, soldiers came from all parts of Canada to trainat Camp Vernon. Vernon’s first airport opened onMission Hill, and private schools welcomed stu-dents with the promise of a British education. The confidence of the 1920’s was followed by thedepression of the 1930’s as the supply of or-chard fruit vastly exceeded the demand. Roadand rail transportation improved enough thatthe CPR discontinued sternwheeler passengerservice on Okanagan Lake.
Another war brought more troops for training atCamp Vernon, while the end of the war saw anew tide of immigration to the valley. Postwaroptimism produced improvements in communi-cation, education, transportation, and entertain-ment. Orchards began to disappear as
orchardists sold out to eager developers. Thearmy camp came alive once more in 1949, thistime with the arrival of cadets from acrossCanada. The completion of new highways to thecoast and Alberta added tourism to the economicmix. New construction from the 1960’s topresent day has included a civic centre, arecreation complex, several shopping malls, library, multiplex, and a performing arts centre. The city continues to thrive - a unique history,a diversified economy, a beautiful natural setting, and a balance between sports and cultural activ-ities have all contributed to making Vernon the
"Top of the Okanagan".
The beginnings of theGreater Vernon Museumand Archives can betraced back to threemen: Charles Haines,David Howrie Sr. andW.C. Pound. Haines, aresident of Coldstream, had trained as a cabinet-maker and taxidermist.Howrie was in the con-struction business and
had been mayor of Vernon from 1943-1948.Pound had worked in Vernon as a taxidermistand furrier for 58 years. When Pound passedaway in 1949, his mounted specimens were leftto the city with the understanding that thecollection would become the nucleus for amuseum. Haines and Howrie then took on thetask. Haines, using the Pound specimen’s alongwith artifacts from his own collections, contributed hundreds of hours of volunteer timeto the creation of museum displays. In the mean-time, Howrie handled the politics of developingthe structure of the organization. The firstmuseum was located in the back rooms of W.L.Seaton School and on June 6th, 1950, MayorT.R.B. Adams officially opened the museum tothe public. In 1967, the museum moved to itspresent location. From humble beginnings, theVernon Museum now occupies over 12,000square feet of space and attracts thousands ofvisitors each year.

GREY CANAL HISTORIC TRAILAn ambitious irrigation project in 1906 resulted in 46km (19mi) of irrigationditches, dam flumes, pump and reservoirs of the Grey Canal, one of the most extensive systems ever built in British Columbia. It is a gently undulating trail withspectacular valley views. Today, the full length of the trail is 4.8km, ending atGlenhayes Rd. Interpretive signs offer some insight into the Grey Canal then andnow. The trailhead is just off Silver Star Road on Blackcomb Way, 1.5km from BXSchool. Return by the same route to the parking area off Silver Star Road, but ashorter loop of 3.5km is an option. Dogs allowed between Silver Star & Rugg Rd.
