SHIPPENSBURG HEAD COACH: In his 15th season at his alma mater, Mark Maciejewski has posted a 33-15 overall record in five years as head coach. He has guided the Red Raiders to a winning record in each season as head coach, highlighted by an 11-win campaign in 2012 when he was tabbed the AFCA Super Region One Coach of the Year. Maciejewski helped mentor the development of quarterback Zach Zulli, who received the 2012 Harlon Hill Award after leading all NCAA divisions in touchdown passes and passing yards.

SCOUTING THE RED RAIDERS: Through the opening weeks of the season, Shippensburg leads the PSAC in scoring offense with 42.0 points/game despite returning only four starters. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Zapoticky has passed for over 225 yards in each game and has also rushed for over 75 yards this season. Senior wide receiver Sheldon Mayer was an All-PSAC East First-Team selection in 2014 after ranking second in the league in receiving yards. The Red Raiders sit second in the league with nearly 500 rushing yards through two games, as four players have totaled at least 75 rushing yards. Senior Andrew Smith leads the team with 175 yards and two scores, while junior Justin Pyle has 110 yards and three touchdowns (one receiving). Behind eight returning starters, Shippensburg also ranks second in the PSAC in scoring defense at 13.5 points/game and are allowing a scant 63.5 rushing yards/game. Sophomore linebacker Kevin Goldsmith leads the team with 23 stops (10 solo), while junior linebacker Allen Holman has tallied 21 tackles (11 solo) with a league-leading 4.5 TFL. On special teams, sophomore Billy Deane serves as both the kicker and punter for the Red Raiders this season, averaging 40.7 yards/punt while making all three field goals with a long of 36 yards.

AGAINST THE EAST: Since 2004, Cal U holds a combined 26-10 record against PSAC East opponents. The Vulcans and Red Raiders last met at Adamson Stadium during the 2007 season when Cal U capped an undefeated regular season with a 30-9 victory. The following year, Shippensburg was realigned to the PSAC East and the teams met twice in the 2009 season, playing in both the PSAC Championship and NCAA Playoffs.

SCRATCH THAT: Reversing back to previous policy, all league-scheduled crossover games this season will not be reflected in the PSAC divisional standings. The league adopted a rule last year that counted all conference-mandated crossover games towards league records.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: The Vulcans were picked to finish fourth in the preseason PSAC West poll after tying for third place in the divisional standings in each of the last three seasons. Cal U had earned at least a share of the top spot in the preseason divisional poll every year from 2005-12. Meanwhile, Shippensburg was picked to tie for third in the PSAC East after winning three of its final four games last season.

AIR TIME: Senior James Harris leads the PSAC with a 193.2 quarterback efficiency through the opening two weeks of the season. He ranks second in the league with 325.0 passing yards/game and is one of only three quarterbacks to complete at least 60 percent of his attempts. Harris enters the weekend just one yard shy of reaching 5,000 career passing yards, a mark accomplished by only four players since the turn of the 21st century.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Vulcans haven’t lost consecutive home games in the regular season since 2009 (Saginaw Valley, Bloomsburg).

STATISTICAL COMPARISON

CALVULCANS

2015 Cal U Football Game Notes www.calvulcans.com

THAT’S A HRAP: In his second career start, sophomore linebacker Luke Hrapchak tied for the team lead with 15 tackles (eight solo) and added 2.0 TFL. He sits second on the team with 18 stops (11 solo) and is tied for second in the PSAC with 4.0 TFL this fall. As a true freshman, Hrapchak appeared in all 10 games and recorded eight tackles after being a first-team all-state selection at Fairmont Senior High School.

LEGWORK: Sophomore kicker William Brazill is tied for the team lead with 12 points through the opening two weeks of the season after transferring from Erie Community College. Last week, he made a pair of field goals (37, 33) in the first half to help the Vulcans build a 13-0 lead against Bloomsburg. Brazill is the first kicker since 2010 other than Cody Nuzzo to attempt a field goal and is also averaging nearly 60 yards/kickoff this year.

MOVING BACKWARDS: The Vulcans rank second in the PSAC in both penalties and penalty yards this season, averaging over 100 penalty yards/game. In comparison, Cal U opponents have committed just a combined eight penalties. The Vulcans led the league last year with 85.2 penalty yards/game and were flagged 90 times over 10 games. Cal U has been penalized for over 100 yards five times in the last 12 games.

SPREAD IT AROUND: In last week’s contest, eight different Vulcans made at least one reception with none totaling more than four catches. Under head coach Mike Kellar, the Vulcans have accomplished the feat of at least eight players with at least one reception nine times. Cal U featured a stunning 10 players with at least one reception, including five with one touchdown, against Kutztown during the 2013 season.

BELL RINGER: Junior Vondel Bell has started both games at defensive back this season after playing offense, defense and special teams in 2014. He joined the program last year after transferring from Fairmont State where he was recruited by former Fighting Falcons head coach and current Cal U defensive coordinator Mike Lopez. A 6-foot-4 junior, Bell has totaled seven stops (all solo) this year.

RARITY: The Vulcans have allowed only two players, both from Bloomsburg, to rush for 100 yards since the start of the 2014 season. Last week, Huskies junior Lawrence Elliott, Jr. eclipsed the century mark on the ground and became the first opposing player to total over 250 all-purpose yards in a game since the 2012 season, as he accounted for 262 yards on 32 touches (166 rushing yards, 90 kick return yards and six receiving yards).

MAKING IT COUNT: Senior defensive back Chaz Veal entered the season as the team’s active career leader in tackles despite just five career starts. Through the opening two weeks of the season, he paces the team and ranks among the league leaders with 19 stops (13 solo). Veal set a career high with 15 tackles (nine solo) last week against Bloomsburg and also registered an interception, his fifth career, just outside the end zone on the final play of the first half.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: In last year’s meeting, Cal U and Shippensburg combined to amass 1,179 yards of total offense with the Vulcans earning a 56-34 road victory. The Vulcans posted a staggering 660 yards of offense and scored touchdowns on seven of their opening 10 drives of the game (punt, field-goal attempt, half).

CALIFORNIA – Cal U scored the opening 13 points and were in position to tie the game late in the fourth quarter before suffering a 20-13 loss to Bloomsburg at Adamson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies amassed 255 rushing yards on 55 attempts in the contest after being held under 100 yards on the ground the previous week. Bloomsburg relied almost exclusively on the run in the second half, posting 163 yards on 36 carries, while only attempting nine passes. Lawrence Elliott, Jr. and Joe Parsnik combined for 240 rushing yards on 48 attempts in the victory with Elliott posting a game-high 166 yards. On the opening play of the fourth quarter, the Vulcans lost possession on downs just past midfield following an incomplete pass. Bloomsburg then used over six-plus minutes off the clock before missing a field goal with 8:24 left to play. The Vulcans were held to a three-and-out before a short punt gave the Huskies possession inside Cal U territory. Bloomsburg mounted a four-minute drive with Elliott scoring on a 24-yard run. The Vulcans later took possession with just over 90 seconds left, Following a sack to open a drive, quarterback James Harris connected with wide receiver Kowan Scott for a 39-yard gain. The Vulcans eventually advanced to the Huskies 17-yard line before an incomplete pass forced a turnover on downs. Linebacker Luke Hrapchak and defensive back Chaz Veal tied for the team lead with 15 tackles. Veal also posted an interception and quarterback hurry, while Hrapchak totaled 2.0 TFL.
