49ers Fan Fest Set for August 13, 2013

San Francisco 49ers \\ 3 // Training Camp Edition

The San Francisco 49ers will host the team’s third annual “Fan Fest” event presented by HP on Saturday, August 10 at Candlestick Park. Further information on the event is featured at 49ers.com.

Last year’s Fan Fest, which saw Faithful fans attend a two-hour 49ers practice, also provided fans the opportunity to tour the stadium and interact with Gold Rush cheerleaders, 49ers alumni and 49ers mascot, Sourdough Sam.

Open to the public, the family-oriented event presented by HP, will serve as the only time to view an open 2013 training camp practice due to the ongoing Levi’s® Stadium construction happening near 49ers headquarters.

In addition to viewing practice from the lower bowl seats of Candlestick Park, fans can enjoy food and beverages inside the stadium, as well as 49ers partner booths, merchandise, live music, Kids Club activities, and a chance to check out the 49ers museum and team store.

San Francisco 49ers \\ 4 // Training Camp Edition

In fall 2012, what started as a simple day at the San Francisco Zoo for 49ers guard Alex Boone and his family led to an unlikely fascination with the Zoo’s newest acquisition, a four-year-old black rhino. The rhino’s strength, speed and critically endangered status struck a chord with Alex, and he asked, repeatedly, what he could do to help the Zoo. From his enthusiasm—and through a collaboration between the Zoo and the 49ers—the Alex Boone Animal Education Project was created to bring local at-risk youth to the Zoo. To thank Alex Boone for his efforts and continued support for the Zoo, the black rhino has been named “Boone.”

On Friday, June 14, Alex Boone, the Gold Rush cheerleaders and Sourdough Sam were at the San Francisco Zoo for the official “Alex Boone Rhino Naming Party.” A 49ers VIP event took place in the Nature Exploration Meadow, where special guests from the 49ers Academy in East Palo Alto and 49ers Kids Club enjoyed an afternoon snack, spray-on tattoos, ball-toss games, live music from the Raytones and goodie bags. After the reception, all Zoo visitors were invited to the black rhino exhibit to see Alex Boone feed Boone the black rhino and unveil the honorary “Boone” plaque.

“There are very few black rhinos left on this planet, so to have one named after me is truly an honor,” said Alex Boone. “It’s awesome to share a close connection with a black rhino, but it’s even better that we can raise awareness for these endangered species through the Alex Boone Animal Education Project.” A common goal of the Zoo and the 49ers Foundation is to engage and educate local youth, and through Boone’s unusual connection to a black rhino, they have found a way to do this together.

San Francisco 49ers \\ 5 // Training Camp Edition

By: Taylor Price, 49ers.com Training Camp Preview: Quarterbacks

The defending NFC champion 49ers will open training camp at the end of the month. But before the pads come on and the competition for 53 coveted roster spots begin, 49ers.com will preview the storylines to track for each position group on the team. San Francisco’s quarterbacks come into focus next in our “49ers Camp Preview” series.

OVERVIEW

The youngest quarterback to start a postseason game in 49ers history has

garnered significant attention this offseason. Colin Kaepernick, 10 starts deep into his NFL career, is one of the most publicized players in the NFL based on his headline-grabbing introduction into the 49ers starting lineup. Kaepernick took over San Francisco’s starting duties 10 weeks into his second season and never looked back. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound passer won four of his first five starts and proved to be an elite, dual-threat talent at the position. After passing for 1,814 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions in the regular season, the 25-year-old raised his game even more in the postseason.

Kaepernick rushed for 181 yards in his first postseason start, setting the NFL’s single-game quarterback rushing record in the process. The young signal-caller picked up a come from behind road win over the Atlanta Falcons to win San Francisco’s sixth NFC Championship and had the 49ers a few plays away from winning Super Bowl XLVII. Nonetheless, Kaepernick put his name and his game on the map with rifled throws and blazing running speed. Kaepernick posted a 100.9 quarterback rating in the postseason and produced seven touchdowns (four passing, three rushing) in three playoff games.

The emerging leader has been a constant worker at team headquarters. Kaepernick has been praised by veteran teammates for his work ethic. According to the 49ers coaching staff, Kaepernick improved in a number of areas of his game. As San Francisco’s unquestioned starter entering his third season, all eyeballs will be on Kaepernick when training camp rolls around. No matter, the confident quarterback likes it that way.

DEPTH

RETURNERS: Colin Kaepernick (third season) and Scott Tolzien (third season). NEWCOMERS: Colt McCoy, (fourth season, acquired via trade) and B.J. Daniels (seventh-round pick, South Florida).

Kaepernick’s presence atop the depth chart is set, but the spots behind the 49ers athletic quarterback will be determined based on performance in training camp and preseason games. The 49ers acquired McCoy from the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2013 NFL Draft and have been pleased with the offseason performance of the fourth-year passer who has made 21 career NFL starts. McCoy is learning his fourth playbook in four seasons, but still managed to complete several downfield passes in San Francisco’s Organized Team Activities and mandatory minicamp. McCoy will face competition from Tolzien and Daniels, two intriguing prospects who have much to offer. Tolzien’s strengths center on his accuracy and cerebral play. Daniels, on the other hand, provides athleticism and play-making ability at the position, much like Kaepernick.

San Francisco 49ers \\ 6 // Training Camp Edition

By: Taylor Price, 49ers Training Camp Preview: Tight Ends OVERVIEW Vernon Davis remains as one of the best players at his position in the National Football League. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound tight end blocks like a lineman and runs like a receiver. Davis ranks highly among all tight ends to ever put on a 49ers uniform. Davis is first among 49ers tight ends in touchdown receptions (40) and second in both receptions (345) and receiving yards (4,351). In his seventh season in San Francisco, Davis caught 41 passes for 548 yards with five touchdown receptions. Davis’ production in the passing game amped up in the postseason with 13 receptions, 254 receiving yards and one touchdown. In Super Bowl XLVII, Davis recorded his fourth, 100-yard game in the postseason, catching six passes for 104 yards. The established veteran continues to find ways to improve his talents. Davis worked on route-running in the offseason by joining wide receiver drills, but remains the team’s No. 1 tight end and one of the vocal leaders on the team. Davis’ leadership has been a positive for young tight ends on the roster, including second-year tight end Garrett Celek, a former undrafted rookie who surprised many by making the team’s 53-man roster at the conclusion of training camp in 2012.

The 49ers lost a versatile contributor in Delanie Walker at the start of free agency this offseason, but picked up a quality prospect in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Vance McDonald, San Francisco’s section with the No. 55 overall pick, has impressed many in his short time with the 49ers. Without the use of pads in Organized Team Activities and minicamps, McDonald hasn't been able to showcase his physicality. However, in his first offseason with the 49ers, the 6-foot-4, 267-pound showed many of the talents that made him a coveted player. McDonald got open down the field and more importantly, displayed the ability to make tough catches away from his body. San Francisco will rely on McDonald to be a key contributor in his first season, but they’ll also ask a lot from Celek, an intriguing prospect who carved out a greater role towards the end of his rookie campaign. With offensive coordinator Greg Roman unafraid to utilize multi-tight end formations, the 49ers will need options at the position. DEPTH RETURNERS: Vernon Davis (eighth season), Garrett Celek (second season) and Demarcus Dobbs (third season). NEWCOMERS: Vance McDonald, (second-round pick, Rice) and MarQueis Gray (undrafted, Minnesota).

Davis remains the clear-cut leader of the group and has been a constant mentor for the young tight ends on the roster. Celek, McDonald and undrafted rookie MarQueis Gray, a former college tight end, have all been outspoken in praising Davis’ leadership. With only four true tight ends on the roster, all four players will see plenty of action when training camp begins. Dobbs, an emerging defensive tackle, saw limited action at tight end in the 2012 offseason program, but primarily worked with the defensive line in 2013. Dobbs’ knowledge of the offense allows him to be an option at tight end, but he will likely continue his defensive line duties in training camp.
