OUR PARTNERSPremier Partners

Major Partners

Preferred PartnersAFL Tasmania has adopted a new development focussed selection criteria for the interstate game between Tasmania and the Victorian Football League in 2012. The selection policy is planned to enable Tasmania to develop competitive interstate teams over the balance of the decade also.2012 State Team Selection CriteriaThe overriding strategy will be to select younger players with talent and potential, players who may catch the eye of AFL recruiters if they perform well at this level, with the points below being further detail:1. In the first year of what will be a six year program, prioritise the selection of

players who are young and who might be able to come on the six year journey (or at least for say four years).

2. Select players who possess AFL attributes, and who show a desire andwillingness to challenge themselves at a higher level.

3. Only select experienced (say 24 years +) senior players with great character andcommitment to the cause, who are extremely fit and who can be part of the journey for at least two or three years.

2013 onwards:• Senior state academy members will be prioritised into the initial squad but not

guaranteed final selection.Assistant Coaches:• State team coaching selections will favour coaches with potential and long term

coaching aspirations, who understand the player development process. 2012 Coaching and Support Squad• Coaches: Adam Sanders, Anthony Taylor, Darren Winter, Ben Beams, Zane

Littlejohn. • Chairman: Nick Probert. • Rehabilitation and fitness: Sam Yee. • Runners: Scott Hawkins, Gavin Cooney. • Head Trainer: Leon Cupit. • Team Manager: Tim Cocker.

STATE TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA

I have been fortunate to be involved with the past seven National Championships coaching or managing the Under 16 and Under 18 Tasmanian teams. Other than senior state games, these are the only times that the traditional map jumper is worn in its true form on the National stage. It is always moving to see the reaction that the players have when given their jumpers for the first time. Regardless of the age it is something very special for footballers to be given a Tasmanian jumper. I remember being given my first jumper in 1987 for the Tasmanian Under 16 team. The pride that you feel to be given an opportunity to represent your state is immense. The jumper is 25 years old this year, but is still safely kept at my home and only occasionally comes out at Christmas for a quick lap around the table. In recent times Tasmania has won Under 18 National Championships in Division 2 in 2001, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011 and at Under 16 level in 2003, 2008 and 2010. On every occasion there is no doubt in my mind that these are moments that the players and staff involved will remember for the rest of their lives. For the players, they are wonderful, character building events where, under the pressure of the biggest stage, often on AFL stadiums and in front of the AFL community by whom they are being judged, the team has been able to stand up and perform, when it matters, to take the title. These are fantastic developmental milestones for the players who achieve them, that stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, be it in football or elsewhere. At the national championships, Tasmania is treated with respect by all states, who know that, whilst sometimes overpowered against the larger division 1 states, games against Tasmania will always be hard, competitive contests. There are no easy games against Tasmania. It was an honour to wear the map in five games for the Tasmanian senior team through the 1990’s and to play a small part in some history making victories, including victories at North Hobart against South Australia in 1995 and Victoria in 1998. Both were very strong teams, with representation from many ex-AFL interstate players who called Tasmania home at that point in time.Today we embark on a new era, with a fresh approach of selecting and developing our own young Tasmanian home grown talent and a new six year game program. One thing will not change and that is the pride in the jumper that every player will have today when they play and the awareness of the responsibility that they carry to uphold the values of those who have worn the jumper before them.

VICTORIA

• Tasmania has played Victorian representative teams on 44 occasions before today. Tasmania has tasted victory on 8 occasions and Victorian teams have won 34 times. In early days Tasmania played 2 draws with Victorian representative teams in 1893.

• Tasmania has on the majority of occasionsbeen selected as a representativeteam with players from the northern and southern regions of the State. The Victorian representative teams have in 41 instances been selected as representatives of the Victorian Football Association (VFA) or the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 1989 – 1991 there were 3 games contested under the ‘State of Origin’ format.

• Tasmania achieved arguably its greatestvictories against Victorian teams in 1960 when a VFL representative team was defeated by 7 points at York Park (now Aurora Stadium) and then again in 1990 when Tasmania defeated Victoria in a State of Origin game at North Hobart Oval. Both these Tasmanian teams have been recognised under the ‘Memorable Game’ category in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.

• Tasmania defeated the VFA by 100 points at the 1956 National Carnival in Perth. In the 1972 National Carnival, again in Perth, the VFL handed out a 182 point shellacking to Tasmania.

• The closest games between the combatants occurred in 1960 when Tasmania defeated the VFL by 7 points and then in 1962 the VFA turned the tables by 6 points with both games being played in Tasmania.

• The last time that Tasmania and a Victorian representative team played wasat North Hobart Oval in 1998. The VFA had morphed into the VFL after the formation of the AFL, but were no match for the Tasmanians who eased away to a 35 point win and another memorable victory for ‘The Map’ in the 1990s.

TBA | TBAINTERSTATE FOOTBALL | HISTORY OF TASMANIA VS VICTORIA

HISTORY INTERSTATE RESULTS

MEMORABLE GAMEThe 1990 Tasmania versus Victoria State of Origin game at North Hobart Oval was a memorable victory for Tasmania in arguably the purest form of interstate competition for Australian Rules football.

In 1989, Tasmania met Victoria at state of origin level for the first ever time. The match, played at North Hobart Oval in front of 12,342 spectators, resulted in a win to a very powerful Victorian side by 56 points, but the home side, which stayed right in contention until midway through the third term, was by no means disgraced, and indeed the match went some way towards restoring state pride. It would be another twelve months, however - and, coincidentally, exactly thirty years on from arguably Tasmanian football’s greatest hour, its victory over the VFL at York Park, Launceston in 1960 - for that pride to be fully restored.

The relatively young Tasmanian team of 1990 was led by coach, Robert Shaw, and captain, Darrin Pritchard, to a stunning win against a Victorian team led by David Parkin and Gary Ayres. The game was played before a parochial crowd of 18,651 spectators - the second biggest attendance ever to witness an interstate match in Tasmania - at the spiritual home of Tasmanian football, North Hobart Oval.
