TEXAS A&M SERIES NOTES This fall will mark the second meeting against

Texas A&M but the fi rst since taking on the 1919 Aggies. Texas State legendary coach O.W. Strahan began his coaching career by playing Texas A&M and suff ered a 28-0 loss. Strahan would go on to coach 16 seasons at Texas State, then called Southwest Texas State Normal College.

Last year, Texas State’s upset bid fell short in a 24-17 loss at Baylor. The Bobcats never led in the game but cut the Bears’ lead to 21-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Texas State has also played Big 12 members Oklahoma State (2000) and Missouri (2001).

Texas State second-year coach David Bailiff was a member of Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione’s staff s at Texas State, New Mexico and TCU. Franchione coached the Bobcats for two seasons (1990-91).

Former Texas State head coach Jim Bob Hel-duser (1992-96) is the off ensive line coach for the Aggies.

SOUTH DAKOTA ST. SERIES NOTES For the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State, their game at Texas State will be a rare con-test outside of the Dakotas this season. SDSU plays seven games at home in Brookings and also plays Cal-Davis 60 miles down Interstate 29 from campus in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota State began the process of making the move from NCAA Division II to Division I-AA in 2004. The Jackrabbits’ move coincided with the university joining a new league, the Great West Football Conference. In addition to SDSU, Texas State will take on Great West member Southern Utah during the year.

The South Dakota State game is part of a home-and-home series against Texas State. The Bobcats are expected to return the game in 2007.

South Dakota State coach John Stiegelmeier has the most tenure at his current school than any other Texas State opponent this season. Stiegelmeier begins his ninth season at SDSU and has led the Jackrabbits to three straight winning seasons.

NICHOLLS STATE SERIES NOTES The Paddle returned to the hands of the Texas State Bobcats with a 35-12 win over Nicholls State in 2004. Since fl oods in San Marcos in 1998 postponed the Nicholls State/Texas State game until the end of the season, the two teams have played for a rowing oar in a game dubbed the “Battle for the Paddle.”

Texas State scored on its fi rst series of last year’s game. It was the only time during the 2004 season the Bobcats scored on their ini-tial drive.

The series between Nicholls State and Texas State is currently tied at 11-11. The Bobcats won three straight starting with the inaugu-ral “Battle for the Paddle” in 1998. Prior to last year’s game, Nicholls State had held on to the trophy since 2001.

Texas State will serve as Nicholls State’s home-coming opponent this season.

Texas State’s fi ve-overtime game against Nicholls State in 1996 is tied for the fourth-longest overtime game in Division I-AA his-tory. The 13-point margin in Nicholls State’s win is also a Division I-AA record.
