For example, what does Lupe mean when she

says that her dog Pipiolo is the "savior of the

roof dogs?" What is a roof dog?

I've never heard that term before. I will

continue reading to see if my questions are

answered in the story.

Metaphor: The writer is comparing the howling of the dogs to the sounds of musical instruments playing. They are expressing their joy by howling, just as a person might express joy by singing.
