What is World Hepatitis Day (July 28)?

The definition from whdcanada.org is the following:

“World Hepatitis Day is an annual event that brings attention to chronic viral hepatitis worldwide and stands in solidarity with persons who have hepatitis B or C, two forms of life-threatening liver disease.” Approximately 500 million people – one in 12 worldwide – are infected with viral hepatitis B or C. In Canada, an estimated 550,000 people have viral hepatitis, with many unaware of their status.

Many persons

with viral hepatitis experience no obvious symptoms until serious liver damage has occurred. In fact, in Canada, about one in five people with Hepatitis C (HCV) do not know they have the virus.

If left untreated, viral hepatitis can lead to severe damage to the liver, liver cancer, and the need for a liver transplant. The slogan for 2014 events in Canada is: Know your status? Get tested.

Often times in my practice it is during routine blood testing

that I find elevated liver enzymes. This is because I recommend a complete blood chemistry panel on most patients over the age of 40.

MSP (Medical services plan of BC)

does NOT pay for prevention so many times MDs will refuse to do a complete chemistry. I measure five liver enzymes ALT, AST, GGT, LDH, and bilirubin as well as

platelets, albumin, vitamin D and ferritin, triglycerides, lipids and insulin levels.

When liver enzymes are elevated over 40-60

then a hepatitis screen is recommended. According to most experts anyone in the age range of 47-67 should be tested automatically because precautions with blood products did not start until 1990.

How do you get Hepatits C?

You may risk exposure to hepatitis C by using injection drugs (even once), getting tattoos, piercings, pedicures, manicures or medical procedures with improperly sterilized equipment, sharing personal hygiene items with an infected person (e.g. razors, toothbrushes, nail clippers) or having had a blood transfusion

or received blood products prior to July 1990.

The concern that naturopathic physicians have also is the huge incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD which is epidemic among overweight and obese individuals with insulin resistance being the main risk factor for this condition.

Fatty liver (steatosis) occurs in up to 70 percent of those with chronic HCV. Steatosis increases the risk of failing standard anti-viral therapy and the more severe form of non-alcholic steatotic hepatitis (NASH) increases the risk of developing cirrhosis and liver

cancer. Aside from a liver

biopsy there is score available at www.nafldscore.com that is used by the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease where six variables: age, BMI, hyperglycemia, platelet count, albumin, AST/ALT ratio are used to calculate a score that would indicate the need for a liver biopsy when ultrasound in not definitive. Elevated ferritin is also a risk factor for steatosis in HCV infections.

Naturopathic Treatments

In addition to the standard treatment guidelines for HCV which include control of insulin resistance, exercise and avoidance of alcohol there are few new recommendations in the guidelines. This

includes Vitamin E as low levels were found in HCV trials. Other anti-oxidants that quench free radicals in liver tissue include zinc, glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, selenium, vitamin A, C and D.

World Hepatitis Day should also include awareness of this epidemic threat of NAFLD. As the obesity rate rises amongst children the incidence of NAFLD is also rising in children. The sooner you know about it the sooner you can make changes to prevent fatal liver disease.

Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus:/

n The virus can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis infection, ranging in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness.

n The hepatitis C

virus is a bloodborne virus and the most common modes of infection are through unsafe injection practices; inadequate sterilization of medical equipment in some health-care settings; and unscreened blood and blood products.

n 130–150 million

people globally have chronic hepatitis C infection.

n A significant number of those who are chronically infected will develop liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.

n 350,000 to 500,000 people die each year from

hepatitis C-related liver diseases.

n Antiviral medicines can cure hepatitis C infection, but access to diagnosis and treatment is low.

n Antiviral treatment is successful in 50–90 per cent of persons treated, depending on the

treatment used, and has also been shown to reduce the development of liver cancer and cirrhosis.

The Vancouver Island Regional Library (the “Library”), serves approximately 415,000 residents through (39) locations within a 92,344 square kilometer area of Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) and the main-land Central Coast. Further information about the Vancouver Island Regional Library is available at www.virl.bc.ca

VIRL will maintain a library branch within the Tahsis Village.

The objective of this RFP is to obtain premises for the Tahsis library branch which meet the Library’s site location and facility standards. Either existing or purpose built structures will be considered. The Library’s preference is for premises locat-ed near the community center.

The Library’s preference is for proposals which contemplate that the Library may purchase the proposed premises from the respondent. The Libraries second preference is a partnership with a member jurisdiction or another public sector enterprise. The Library is, however, open to proposals which contemplate that the Library would lease the proposed space from the respondent. If a lease is proposed, the Library’s preferred initial lease term is ten (10) years.

Sealed Proposals must be received not later than 3:00 p.m. (15:00 hrs), Pacific Time, Friday August 15th, 2014. Proposals received after the “Closing Date and Time” WILL NOT be accepted and will not be considered. Late Proposals will be returned unopened to the Proponent. Proponents have the sole responsibility to deliver and ensure Proposals are time and date stamped.

The Quadra Island Golf Club hosted their 1st Annual Hotel & Business Challenge on Saturday July 12th. This was a nine hole event with a shotgun start at 1:30pm.
