SUSPENDING REALITYjust for a couple of hours.

You make your way to your seat having parked your car, checked your coat, and ordered a drink. A volunteer usher hands you a program. The lights dim, and you are ready and willing to be taken somewhere else. You’re on a journey away from your everyday life, powered by the magic and exhilaration of a live performance.

I believe we attend live performing arts events to be transported or changed in some way. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering; we simply want to be entertained, inspired, encouraged, or sometimes even bothered.

Dropping our daily routine and diverting our attention for a couple of hours seems like such a simple task – but I surmise that for many of us, we have to make a concerted effort to do so. The Fredericton Playhouse Spotlight Series, our flagship program, is here to help you do just that.

The 2013-14 Series brings the world to Fredericton. There truly is something for everyone: large-scale blockbuster productions, the bright-eyed performances of emerging Canadian talents, traditional work from our own backyard, and virtuosic classical and contemporary performances from far-flung locales.

I hope that you enjoy these performances as much as we enjoy presenting them to you. Each and every event has been carefully considered for you and for our community. I invite you to try something you hadn’t considered until now.

Be curious. Discover something new. Come along for a unique journey – an escapefrom the banal – if only for a couple of hours.I promise you won’t regret it.

Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal Friday, February 28

An internationally renowned repertory company, BJM has continued to grow with all the energy and spirit of exploration for which it has been known since its birth in 1972. Famous for its radiant and expressive style, BJM performs dance that is built on classical technique and whose voice embraces vital contemporary energy. With three exhilarating works by three cutting-edge choreographers, these performances will leave you breathless.

HARRY Choreography by Barak MarshallThis piece revolves around the character of Harry, who struggles to overcome forces both physical and existential. Teeming with energy, the work underscores a recurrent theme in human interactions: conflicts and our ability to overcome them. Set to a score combining jazz, Israeli folksongs and traditional music, this new opus is imbued with hope and humour, alternating group sequences, trios and duets in a fabulous extravaganza of dance.

NIGHT BOXChoreography by Wen Wei WangIn creating this new piece for Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Wen Wei Wang was inspired by urban life, especially as it unfolds at night. Evoking the city through sounds, rhythms, music and an incessant blinking of lights, Night Box is a high-voltage work in which love, loss, sexuality and joy are intertwined. In a state of perpetual movement, it combines contemporary ballet with street dance in alternating sequences for group, trio, duet and solo.

ZERO IN ONChoreography by Cayetano Soto“Zero in on someone/something: to start to give all your attention to a particular person or thing” -From Macmillan Dictionary

“In zero second you have to get in and on with your energy and power” says choreographer Cayetano Soto. This is the structure beneath this duet. The size of the stage was reduced so the focus is only on the dancers.
