available for the workshops including Campeche, Hackberry, Brazilian Rain Trees, and Bald Cypress. It promises to be a won-derful convention at the Ramada Orlando, where we are receiving better values than last year. The convention is once again sched-uled for the Memorial Day week-end, so please join us.

The Board of BSF had a very productive meeting in November and we continue to strive to make BSF a more modern and contemporary managed business. Our Speakers Bureau not only is effi ciently managed, but we are now invoicing clubs through our online QuickBooks account. Henning Glatter-Gotz, our Webmaster, provided a presenta-tion which clearly defi ned the opportunities created by having an accurate database. Eventually, we will do more business online through our website, including convention registration and sale of merchandise, but in the mean-time, let’s work together to get our membership database accu-rately in place.

stories about his training in Japan were captivating, pictures and PowerPoint presentations spec-tacular, and his ability to impart his training into our tropical material through workshop was

inspiring. If you haven’t already, be sure to take this time to read his article in the fall’s Florida Bonsai Magazine as it described his expe-riences in Japan.

We are looking forward to this year’s speakers: Ben Oki, Robert Mahler and Lindsay Shiba.

Please be sure to join us in May for the BSF Convention; The Soul of Bonsai hosted by the Brevard Bonsai Society. The convention headliner will be Robert Steven from Jakarta, Indonesia. There will be a wide variety of material

Like me, somewhere after prom-ising to drop those extra pounds, and the ten other resolutions you will never achieve, you’re promising to be more diligent, spend more time and improve the quality of your bonsai. The Bonsai Societies of Florida will help you achieve your bonsai New Year’s resolution through your active participation in the programs, speakers, education, and activ-ities offered through BSF. Whatever your bonsai goals might be, I hope that our BSF organization continues to play a role in helping you accomplish them in the year to come.

In another bit of business, in the year 2011 (next year, not this year), BSF dues will be increased to $15.00 per member. Our dues have not been increased in over 20 years and it is a necessity that we have the working capital to manage BSF business concerns. Our organizational dues are still less than many other similar organizations and represents a great value for the dollar. Thank you for your understanding. The last time BSF raised its dues; pizza was 35¢ a slice and you received glasses when you went in for a tank of gas! Times have changed indeed! So this increase is a necessity.

There was a delivery problem with our last BSF magazine that was a post offi ce issue. Even though the magazine was printed, labeled and posted for delivery, they were incarcerated by the post offi ce in a disagreement between two branches regard-ing delivery priority vs. bulk mail. Sometimes there are grow-ing pains as you try to improve

s I write this the temperature has taken another plunge. My tropical trees are not happy on these cold nights even if these cooler temperatures us a much needed change from the heat and humidity of our never-ending summers.

We were all very upset at the extremely late mailing of the pre-vious issue. What happened was that we change printer. The new vendor offered a better quality of paper, a 4-color cover and generally better quality and allover look of the publica-tion, at a cost savings.

Unfortunately, we suffered with the delivery system. We used the normal mail-ing procedure and delivered it to the United States Postal Service. This usually takes roughly 2 weeks until all of our member-ship receives their printed issue. Unfortunately this time the USPS was the crux our problem. Internal bureaucracy tied up the delivery of the issue. The printer did all that was humanly possible to track the mailing and to solve

the dilemma, but we are unfortu-nately at the mercy of USPS.

To complicate matters further, I was on an extended vacation, during which time the magazine

sat in postal bins for an additional 27 days. I have heard from many of you and you have received your issues. I hope this is true for the majority of our readers.

I would like to thank all the contributors for our winter issue. Erik Wigert has written an informative article on Bougainvilleas. I hope you fi nd John Bishop’s article helpful and of interest. Alberto Cruz raises an interesting conversation about our soil usage. The Healthcote Garden donation by Jim Smith should prove inspirational to all our members. We look forward

to the opening of this collection.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy the photo gallery from the WBFF 6th Convention in Puerto Rico. It was a thrill to see so many talented bonsai artists gathered together at one event. I’m still amazed at Pedro’s who coordina-tee this remarkable event, the size and scope were overwhelming. The convention’s main theme was a “Bonsai Olympics” competition.

A fresh idea to involve as many of the attendees as possible. There were many categories in which to compete, and on a happy note I was honored to accept the bronze medal at the convention for our publication, Florida Bonsai. I want to thank all of the our contribu-tors to this publications for mak-ing this award possible.

Wishing you and your trees a very happy and healthy new year. ❏

I’m interested in hearing from all of you, and if I am, so are the other BSF members throughout the state. Therefore, if you have stories to tell or bonsai knowl-edge to impart, please prepare

an article for our BSF magazine so all of us can share your expe-rience. Even short stories and updates are perfectly acceptable to be printed in our magazine.

I look forward to seeing all of you in Orlando. ❏

Developing Bougainvillea Bonsai

BY ERIK WIGERT

First of all, I can say that almost any collected Bougainvillea has potential to become an interest-ing bonsai. Granted, some of us want large impressive trunks, others shohin, some need to see movement. The end result in all cases that we need to remember is however: to build a canopy that will support the colorful bracts!

With that in mind lets move on to the process.

When you look at that large thorny bush in your yard, (or your neighbors yard) realize that all you need is the trunk. Disregard the tangle, and focus where the trunk emerges from the soil. Look at the trunk and make some initial

decided to approach this article with the intent to share some tips I use to collect and develop Bougainvillea stock into fi nished bonsai. As such, I will open this article with the assumption that all of us as Florida bonsai enthusiasts have seen, and know what a Bougainvillea is. They would be very hard to miss in the landscape during our drier months when they are in full glory. Their beautiful color is certainly what enchanted me initially and continues to reward me daily when I look out at my collection.

choices. Remember the ratio we may have all heard: The height of the tree should be equal to or less then 6 times the diameter of the trunk. This gives us good

proportion in our bonsai. With this in mind you can cut the top out of the tree after you make your mental measurements. Now, get it out of the ground. I usually expose the nebari by hand. I have seen shovels damage nice surface roots in the past. Pull back the soil, to fi nd where the roots fl are away from the trunk. Then either with a electric saw or a hand saw cut through your lateral roots, then rock the tree and dig until you can get under it to cut any tap roots. Don’t worry about losing small

and fi lled the holes with Bondo Wood Filler.

At this point you are fi nished.

Figure 10: Assembled tray {Insert Pict 11}

However, there are several refi ne-ments you might like to apply. I used a round-over bit in my router and softened all edges including the hand holes. A sanding with 150 and 220 sandpaper smoothes the surfaces nicely.

Although not essential, some sort of fi nish helps the clean-up after using and preserves the wood. On the original, I used a urethane varnish and this

has held up for a couple years. However, it does not have much UV protection and after set-ting out in the sun for a couple

years, the fi nish is starting to degrade. For this ver-sion, I used Behr Premium Transparent Deck, Fence, and Siding Waterproof Finish, Natural color. This isn’t cheap but after 3 coats,

it gives a nice look. I can’t speak to durability at this time. Lastly, I used silicone caulk in the inside seams. This keeps material from building up in the corners and it is a lot easier to clean after use.

One other touch you might con-sider. If you use the tray on a table or other surface you care about, consider adding plastic/rubber bumper feet in the corners. I also

added them on one end because I store mine standing on end.

I have found this tray to be a very convenient aid when it comes to working on my plants. It contains

the mess and when clean-up time comes I can carry it outside and dump the waste. The side walls make it very easy to just brush debris into a bucket or compost bin. The utility of this far out-weighs the effort to make it and it can be as simple or as complex as you want. ❏

2010 Epcot Flower and Garden Festival

n today’s world the importance of escape and artistic pleasures are needed more than ever. The intrinsic beauty of Bonsai is admired by a very diverse range of individuals from every race, gender, income, and age group. That, combined with the magical properties and mysteries that surround this ancient art form, is at its core to be shared and displayed for the enjoyment of everyone.

The Bonsai Societies of Florida have had the fi nest opportunity to make this happen in one of the best showcases available, the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. Year after year, in cooperation with Walt Disney World®, BSF has displayed out-standing selections of trees from Florida for the world to see. The attendance of this Festival has increased dramatically each year, and the Bonsai display in the Japanese Pavilion is the highlight for many of the park visitors.

For the past 16 years BSF has wel-comed applications from Florida’s bonsai artists for consideration of their tree for the display. Over this time the number of entries and the tree quality has increased, making this exhibit truly a World Showcase of Bonsai.

The 2010 Flower and Garden Festival will run for 10 weeks, starting on March 3rd and end-ing on May 16th. For many of the bonsai exhibitors this is a long time to have a tree on display, and with the early start this com-ing year there will be challenges with temperatures, and seasonal changes. However, the staff at Epcot has always been accommo-dating and focused on the health and well-being of the trees while under their care.

Last year we had the great plea-sure of having 25 percent of the exhibitors being fi rst-timers. I know I speak for them when I say it will not be their last. Along with the honor of having their tree displayed for millions to see, WDW provides hotel stays,

tickets, meals, and mileage for all those participating.

If you haven’t displayed a tree before, or entered a tree for that matter, please consider doing so this year. The process is very simple, and the BSF-Epcot Committee takes every entry seriously. The Board tries to incorporate the very best to make up the year’s display, but will also offer advice and guidance to those that were not selected.

As in previous years, the dead-line for entries of the 31st of December, but don’t wait until the last minute to take your tree’s photographs. For decision mak-ing, the photograph is the most

important aspect of the applica-tion and needs to represent the best qualities that the tree has to offer. Be sure to take photos with full foliage and in a manner that demonstrates that the tree is ready and will help the Bonsai Societies of Florida show its fi nest collection of Bonsai.

Along with the application, you will fi nd the specifi cs of the tree requirements and all other infor-mation needed to properly submit your tree. I look forward to hear-ing from all of you, and wish you all the best of luck during the selection process. ❏

great, plus it’s lightweight and easy to use. Healing is very slow on Bougainvillea. Make certain after carving the wood to be sure to treat with a preservative. I pre-fer Minwax® ‘Wood Hardener’. Paint it liberally onto the dead wood at least once a year.

Once your tree begins to develop a shape it’s important to defoliate at least once a year and assess the branch structure. Branches tend to thicken, and cross randomly if left

to their own devices. Prune back and rewire as needed. You will likely fi nd that defoliating is the most reliable way to force blooms on your tree. I time a defoliation prior to exhibitions to obtain a full canopy of blooms. If your tree shows signs of yellowing or lack of vigor it’s likely root bound, or the pot is retaining too much water. I keep all my large specimens in mica pots as they have extra drain holes, and switch them to ceramic pots only for exhibitions. ❏

T HE KEY TO BOUGAINVILLEA – STAY ON TOP OF THEM!

❏ Cut hard in the fi rst styling, don’t waste time!❏ Bare-root and repot in Bonsai soil at fi rst styling.❏ Wire fi rst growth as soon as its long enough to set the primary branches.❏ Allow a few months growth; then wire again to set secondary branches.❏ Then get in a pattern of ‘topiary trimming’. Work to build the silhouette of your Bonsai.❏ Defoliate and prune for proper branching, then rewire every year. ❏ In between continue ‘topiary trimming’.❏ Keep in full sun, fertilize well and use well-draining soil.
