?ARE YOU IGNORING YOUR SOIL FERTILITY DURING PERIODS OF PEAK STRESS?A common practice on intensely managed turf during periods of peak stress is to rely solely on a foliar feeding program. Studies from leading universities have shown the benefit of a baseline nutrition program utilizing a combination of granular (soil applied) and foliar nutrients to optimize overall plant and soil health.

TURF TISSUE – TURF TISSUE IS A HIGHLY EFFICIENT

SOLAR COLLECTOR ABSORBING LIGHT AND CONVERTING

THAT ENERGY INTO SUGARS USED IN MANY PLANT

PROCESSES. WHEN APPLIED TO THE LEAF TISSUE

NUTRIENTS ARE ABSORBED THROUGH CUTICLE OR

STOMATAL PORES WHICH ENTER CELLS DIRECTLY OR ARE

TRANSLOCATED THROUGH THE PLANT VASCULAR SYSTEM.

Foliar feeding with Foltec is most efficacious when applied at low water volume rates to ensure nutrients "stick" to the leaf surface. This allows for optimal uptake and absorption into the leaf tissue. Foltec Fortify provides several key immobile nutrients including; Calcium, Iron, Manganese and Silicon which are best delivered and utilized through foliar application.

ROOT TISSUE – THE PRIMARY SITE OF NUTRIENT AND

WATER UPTAKE, ROOT TISSUE INTERACTIONS WITH THE

SOIL ARE INCREDIBLY COMPLEX. SOIL TESTING AND

PLANT TISSUE ANALYSIS ARE THE FIRST STEPS IN A

SUCCESSFUL NUTRITION STRATEGY.

Roots and root hairs extend through the soil and soil solution contacting nutrients. Through a variety of complex processes these nutrients move through the root surface and into the xylem tissue where they are transported throughout the plant. Applications of Contec DG disperse into the soil and quickly solubilize to provide essential nutrients in the soil solution for uptake by the roots.

The Andersons A+ program addresses the soil health issues described on the left with unique products like Humic DG and Biomend DG Black Gypsum.

These products provide essential organic acids, such as humic and fulvic acids and humic acid precursor, in a highly concentrated form that provide the following benefits: 1. Increased soluble Carbon resulting in the stimulation of the soil microbial population and improvements in soil physical structure.

2. Increased Cation Exchange Capacity allowing for improved nutrient holding capability and enhanced soil nutrient content.

3. Calcium in the form of gypsum to aid in the exchange and flushing of harmful salts and excess soil sodium.

Turfgrass managers typically encounter both sand based/constructed growing systems and native soils. The management of soil sodium and salt affected soils is a critical component for assuring optimum plant health. Over time, the application of poor quality irrigation water can negatively impact soil physical quality and chemistry through the addition of sodium and other salts.

Excess salts in the soil can lead to many issues including: 1. Water deficit leading to increased wilting. 2. Decreased soil permeability resulting in limited air and water movement. 3. Nutrient imbalances and deficiencies resulting in decreased stress and wear tolerance.

Warm Season Turf

ESSENTIAL TURF CARE NUTRIENTS

To retain vigor, turfgrass plants manufacture hundreds of complex organic compounds from the synthesis of plant nutrients. Nutrient mobility within the plant varies. Some of the nutrients are highly mobile through the plant, while others are relatively immobile.

Mobility of nutrients in the plant:

Mobile Nutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Chlorine (Cl), Sodium (Na)

Somewhat Mobile: Sulfur (S), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), Boron (B)

Immobile: Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si)

Cool Season Turf generally requires a higher percentage of its nutrition to be delivered in the spring and autumn, with moderate needs during the summer months. A Baseline

Cool Season Turf

Baseline Turf Nutrition is considered to be a basic level of nutrition that helps the turf plant withstand the pressures of disease, insects, traffic, and stressful weather conditions. Granular nutrient applications ensure adequate levels of plant nutrition throughout the growing season.

Soil testing and plant tissue analysis are valuable tools that can be used to develop a turf nutrition plan.

Determining the correct amount and balance of nutrients is essential to turf health. Other factors to take into consideration are the turf type, the length of growing season, climatic conditions, and the amount of wear the turf is exposed to.

The timing and levels of turf nutrition depends on the type of turf being grown.

BASELINE NUTRITION An essential component in developing an effective nutrition plan to maintain healthy turf.

Turf Nutrition Plan includes soil based granular applications throughout the growing season. Foliar nutrition is then applied to complement granular baseline nutrition, especially during the summer when turf can be under stress.

Warm Season Turf generally requires a higher percentage of its nutrition to be delivered during the period of late spring through early autumn. A Baseline Turf Nutrition

Plan includes soil based granular applications throughout the growing season. Foliar nutrition is then applied to complement granular baseline nutrition.

Contec DG combines premium turf nutrients and our patented dispersing granule technology into a homogenous granule designed to optimize granular applied turf nutrition.

Improved Playing Conditions Less Interruption of Play Contec DG requires less watering to disperse the nutrient granules allowing for less downtime and a drier and firmer playing surface.

No Sticky ResidueContec DG melts into the turf canopy. The result is no sticky fertilizer residue which can accumulate on shoes, balls and equipment.

Enhanced Nutrient DistributionPatented Dispersing Granule TechnologyUpon contact with water each granule disperses into thousands of micro particles that move through the turf canopy into the root zone.

Dispersibility eliminates problems with mower pick-up, sticky residue on equipment and product run-off.

Optimized Nutrition

“The best thing about Contec DG is I don’t have to worry about mower pick-up. I don’t have to wait until closed days to fertilize. I can do it anytime.” - Larry Johnson, Superintendent, North Ridge Country Club, Fair Oaks, CA

No Mower Pickup Contec DG readily disperses into the turf canopy following irrigation, eliminating mower pickup and delivering 100% of applied nutrients to the turf. Mower pickup of conventional granular fertilizers is reported to be as high as 15-25%.

No Mower Damage or Residual Shells Contec DG technology does not rely on a physical coating to release nutrients. Coated fertilizers are very susceptible to mower damage and premature nutrient release.

No Particle Movement Contec DG disperses quickly when water is applied and moves through the turf canopy into the soil. In a heavy rain or over-irrigation, conventional fertilizers may float and be carried off the intended application area or be deposited in low lying areas where damage may occur.

L-Amino AcidsBenefits of The Andersons Amino AcidsUnder stressful conditions such as excessive heat or drought, it is difficult for plants to produce essential amino acid compounds.Selected Contec DG products are fortified with amino acids to provide the following benefits:

• Contain L-Amino acids which are the most biologically active and are preferred by the plant• L-Amino acids applied in early spring, help the turf tolerate later season stress• Improves tolerance to water stress during hot and dry conditions• Reduces stress induced plant aging for extended health and quality

THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTS FEATURE THE ANDERSONS PATENTED DISPERSING GRANULE TECHNOLOGY:

Benefits of Humic Acid Precursor • Increases soluble carbon in the soil

• Prevents nutrient losses by helping balance the carbon to nitrogen ratio

• Highly effective in carbon depleted

soils like USGA greens and other sand based growing systems

• Automatically optimizes rate of

humic acid precursor application when Contec DG is used at label rates

What is Humic Acid Precursor?Humic acid precursor is a unique water soluble binder system used in Contec DG and Biomend DG. Derived from a special source of biomass, humic acid precursor is produced through a dual combination of both physical and chemical processing resulting in soluble three dimensional polyphenolic carbohydrate biopolymers.

How Does It Work?Humic acid precursor contains a soluble form of organic carbon which releases into the soil as Contec DG and Biomend DG granules disperse. Research has shown that organic carbon holds nitrogen in the soil and binds readily with carbon based acids. This increases the amount of dissolved organic carbon in the soil water.

Through biochemical reactions in the soil, humic acid precursor is transformed into humic and fulvic acids which help chelate nutrients in the soil. For best results, humic acid precursor should be applied at light, frequent rates to maintain activity.

Research has shown that humic acid precursor technology is most effective at 10-15 lbs/Acre per month. This is easily delivered when applying Contec DG at normal application rates.

An R&D project was initiated in 2008 as a part of the $5 million grant awarded to the Andersons by the Ohio Department of Development. In conjunction with the Ohio State University and the ongoing research supporting the A+ Complete Turf Health System, an additional program was designed with the goal of exploring the combination of DG technology and the use of bio-materials to achieve improved nutrient efficiency in a more sustainable cost effective manner.

As a result of this work The Andersons is pleased to offer our Biomend DG line of products. Biomend DG represents a diverse group of products that deliver naturally derived nutrients fortified with selected biomaterials including; organic acids (humic, fulvic and humin acids) humic acid precursor and amino acids. Biomend DG products feature DG dispersing granule technology for rapid granule dispersion and facilitating move-ment of the nutrients through the turf canopy and into the soil.

Biomend DG products utilize at least 50% organic or natural based ingredients. Biomend DG contains no animal manures.

BIOMEND DG PRODUCTS ARE BIO-ENHANCED AND PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS:• Dispersing granule technology for rapid granule dispersion and soil incorporation

• Homogeneous granules provides uniform application of nutrients.

• Bioenhancements that amend and feed the soil for improved turf response.

Since the successful launch of Contec DG in 2008, satisfied customers have encouraged us to consider combining DG, dispersing granule technology, with natural based fertilizers and soil amendments.

Naturally derived nutrients and bio-enhancements combined with our dispersing granule technology.

We offer four, dispersible BI -AMENDMENTS specifically designed to aid in soil nutrition and plant health

These compounds prevent nutrient loss by improving the C:N ratio in the soil and by chelating soil nutrients. All of these benefits are delivered with our DG technology which provides rapid granule dispersion and facilitates movement of essen-tial nutrients into the soil.

Our unique offering of bio-amendment products provide important nutrients such as Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Carbon. They also play a role in promoting overall soil health by providing an organic carbon source we call "Humic Acid Precursor" which is transformed in the soil through biochemical reactions into humic and fulvic acids.

Humic DG Blends - Fertilizer + Humic

Competitor’s dry humic acid product is dusty, non-uniform and contains up to 20% moisture

Humic Acid is a is a combination of natural mineral and a plant based carbon creating a humic acid based granular soil conditioner. Its basic purpose is that of a organic chelator and microbial stimulator. It has a unique carbon matrix incorporating a high concentration of trace minerals and organic acids specifically humic acid which improves the plant’s ability to take in vital nutrients for plant growth and soil development.

Researchers at The Andersons combined pure dry humate using its patented DG process and created a spherical granule containing thousands of tiny humic acid sub-particles with the ability to dissolve into the soil within a few short minutes of application and watering. The sub-particles self-incorporate into the soil providing stability and receptiveness for plant nutrification.

Bio-enhancements for pre-stress conditioning and improved nutrient efficiency

Amino Acids: The Building Blocks Of Healthy Turf Bio-enhancements include seaplant extracts, L-amino acids, vitamins, stress-metabolite complexes and other naturally derived compounds that have a beneficial biological effect on turf health. Under stressful conditions, such as exces-sive heat or drought, it is difficult for turf plants to produce essential amino acid compounds. Foliar applications of L-Amino acids translocate through the leaf and help the plant maintain healthy growth during stressful conditions.

Benefits of The Andersons Amino Acids:• Contain L-Amino acids which are the most biologically active and are preferred by the plant• L-Amino acids applied in early spring, help the turf tolerate later season stress• Improves tolerance to water stress during hot and dry conditions• Improves foliar nutrient uptake• Reduces stress induced plant aging for extended health and quality
