BuNo156925servedintheUSNavyInstrumentTrainingProgram,andwaslargelyusedasalandbasedinstrumenttrainer.Theaircrafthas115arrestedlandingsmakingitoneofthelowestcycleTA-4J’sinexistence.Eventhoughitwasretired,ithadanincredible52%liferemainingbasedonUSNavalutilizationstandards.

TheA-4Skyhawk,inthetwo-seatTA-4Jconfiguration,wasintroducedtoatrainingrolereplacingtheTF-9JCougar.TheTA-4JservedastheadvancedjettrainerinwhiteandorangemarkingsfordecadesuntilbeingreplacedbytheT-45Goshawk.AdditionalTA-4JswereassignedtoInstrumentTrainingRAGsatalltheNavymasterjetbasesunderRCVW-12andRCVW-4.TheInstrumentRAGsinitiallyprovidedjettransitiontrainingforNavalAviatorsduringthetimeperiodwhenNavalAviationstillhadagreatnumberofpropeller-drivenaircraftandalsoprovidedannualinstrumenttrainingandcheckridesforNavalAviators.TheassignedTA-4Jmodelswereinstalledwithcollapsiblehoodssotheaviatorundertraininghadtodemonstrateinstrumentflyingskillswithoutanyoutsidereference.TheseunitswereVF-126atNASMiramar,California;VA-127(laterVFA-127;NASFALLON,NV)atNASLemoore,California;VF-43atNASOceana,Virginia;andVA-45(laterVF-45)atNASCecilField,FloridauntilitslatermovetoNASKeyWest,Florida.
