2. 4/29/2013 3. Cloud computing is a systemin which software programsand applications are accessedand used virtually through anInternet connection. The cloud actually refers tothe Internet. The software isusually hosted on multipleservers in various locations. Multiple users from the samecompany can access thesoftware from anywhere thatthey have an Internetconnection. The costs of cloud computingare normally based on a usagemodel, with payments beingcharged on a time usage basisor an occurrence basis.4/29/2013 4. Infrastructure-as-a-service rather than purchasingservers, software, data center space and networkequipment, the vendor provides these services andbills the client based on the amount of resourcesconsumed. Platform-as-a-service the vendor provides andmanages the operating system, database, andeverything else needed to run certain platforms. Software-as-a-service instead of businessespurchasing a software license, vendors run thesoftware application for you. The software iscontinually updated behind the scenes.(Holland)4/29/2013 5. 4/29/2013 SaaS (software as a service) This type of cloudcomputing delivers a single application through thebrowser to thousands of customers using amultitenant architecture. Utility computing - This form of cloud computing isgetting new life from companies such as Amazon.com,Sun, IBM, and others who now offer storage andvirtual servers that IT can access on demand. Web services in the cloud Closely related to SaaS,Web service providers offer APIs that enabledevelopers to exploit functionality over the Internet, rather than delivering full-blown application. Platform as a service - This form of cloud computingdelivers development environments as a service andis considered another form of SaaS. 6. 4/29/2013 MSP (managed service providers) A managedservice is basically an application exposed to ITrather than to end-users, such as a virus scanningservice for e-mail or an application monitoring serviceand is one of the oldest forms of cloud computing. Service commerce platforms - A hybrid of SaaS andMSP, this cloud computing service offers a servicehub that users interact with and are most commonlyused in electronic trading. Internet integration - The integration of cloud-basedservices is in its early days. 7. 4/29/2013Computer.howstuffworks.com/cloud-computing/cloud-computing 8. Advantages Disadvantages Potential Cost Savings(computers can becustomized with lower costcomponents since theapplications are not runlocally on the computer) Easier access formobile employees.(Wherever there is aninternet connectionemployees will have accessto all there companiesapplications and files) Potential security risk.(Because most cloudnetworks are hosted bythird parties over theinternet there is alwayspotential of data beingcompromised during usage) Not fault-tolerant.(If the cloud is down thereis no direct connection tosoftware or applications. This kind of fault can crippleany major company costingthem time and money)4/29/2013 9. Availability - Will your cloud service go downunexpectedly, leaving you without importantinformation for hours or more? Data mobility and ownership - Once youdecide to stop the cloud service, can you getall your data back? How can you be certainthat the service provider will destroy yourdata once youve canceled the service? Privacy - How much data are cloud companiescollecting and how might that information beused?4/29/2013 10. Today we see cloudcomputing used not only bylarge companies but also byour most popular devices.Apple uses the cloud to makeyour music and videosaccessible no matter whatdevice you use(iPod, iPad,iPhone).
