R&D CAPABILITIES

My primary program is Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for wide bandgap materials, primarily

materials for GaN and ZnO devices. This includes the growth of gate oxides, ALD AlN as a

polar source in GaN, ZnO and gates oxides for ZnO thin film transistors. While the gate oxide

work well they need substantial improvement to improve performance which has lead us to work

on complex oxides. I also collaboration on the application of ALD to MIM devices and energy

applications such as solar cells, fuel cells and batteries.

R&D CAPABILITIES

Research in the Davis lab focuses around pushing quantum mechanics up from the world of atoms and molecules to that which can be fabricated in the lab. This promises to enable new technologies based on quantum physics that reach far beyond those currently possible. At its core this means we nanofabricate devices with extreme precision, and measure them with advanced optical techniques – often at extremely low temperatures. Commercial opportunities arise partly based on in-house technical advances needed to carefully explore fundamental physics.

TECHNIQUES & INSTRUMENTATION SERVICES

The Davis lab has extensive experience in micro and nanofabrication, fiber optics, cryogenics, and custom data acquisition hardware and software. We house two dilution refrigerators capable of cooling near absolute zero to reveal quantum effects, as well as significant instrumentation for fiber optic measurements – tunable diode lasers, custom tapered fibers, cavity enhanced sensors, etc.

R&D CAPABILITIESI manage a group of analytical chemistry graduate students, post docs and

research associates that are working at the interface of analytical science and nanoscience. We have expertise in the control and characterization of liquid solid interfaces. We can reproducibly control the surface chemistry of metallic nanoparticles and have tethered various biomolecules to the surface of gold nanoparticles for use as labels in high sensitivity bioassays. The nanoparticles are detected with enhanced Raman spectroscopy or with surface plasmon resonance.

We are also applying our expertise to open pathways for high volume applications of cellulose nanocrystals. We have developed a method to control the surface polarity of CNC. This allows the efficient mixing of CNC with various polymers. We have expertise in measuring the distribution of the CNC in the polymer matrix and incharacterizing the mechanical properties of the resultant nanocomposite. As an example, we have incorporated CNC into expandable polystyrene (PS) and have prepared reinforced Styrofoam with a compression modulus 60% higher than normal expanded PS.

R&D CAPABILITIESThe alternative energy group at NAIT is able to conduct applied research in areas pertaining to solar (PV, thermal), geo-exchange, micro-combined heat and power, bio-refining, off-grid design, system hybridization, and micro-grid design.

TECHNIQUES & INSTRUMENTATION SERVICESSolar PV system design, economic analysis, system hybridization, micro-grid optimization. Equipment forsolar PV analysis and troubleshooting/O&M. Fermentation and photo-bioreactor suite. Micro-flywheel, various renewable energy systems.

INDUSTRY COLLABORATIONSThe alternative energy group at NAIT completed a 5 year applied research study on the effects of snow and PV module angle on electricity generation in Edmonton, and is in year two of a sister project in Grande Prairie. This research played a critical role in the design of the largest off-grid solar system in western Canada and validated solar-battery solutions as low-cost alternatives to fossil fuel-based electrical generation at remote sites for regulated utilities (ATCOelectric). The study also corroborated assumptions about the validity of low and zero degree rooftop solar systems in Alberta.

Dr. Tian Tang is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

R&D CAPABILITIES

Dr. Tang's research interests interface with applied mechanics (solid mechanics, fracture, contact mechanics and adhesion, statistical mechanics) and materials science (mechanical and interfacial behavior of materials and structures at micro- to nano- scales and in biological systems). Current research areas include:

Multi-scale modeling and simulation of nano-biomolecular hybrid materials

Adhesion in sub-micron structures and in biological/biomimetic systems

Statistical theory for the failure mechanism of compliant solids

Broadly: application of mechanics and computational methods to problems in materials

TECHNIQUES & INSTRUMENTATION SERVICES

Dr. Tang’s group uses a variety of modeling tools, ranging from atomistic to continuum levels, to study

materials. These modeling tools include: quantum mechanical (QM) simulation, QM-MM (molecular

mechanics) hybrid simulation, molecular dynamics (MD), and continuum modeling (including

analytical/semi-analytical solutions and finite element simulation). Many of the atomistic simulations

performed in her group are larger (in length) and longer (in time) than any previous literature.

INDUSTRY COLLABORATIONS

Dr. Tang’s group applies computational analysis to micro- and nano- structures functional in a variety of

applications: environmental, biomedical and nanotechnology. She has ongoing collaboration with Nexen

A CNOOC Limited Company, which focuses on understanding molecular interactions and interfacial

behaviors of asphaltenes towards development of an integrated bitumen recovery and upgrading process

(collaborators including Drs. Hongbo Zeng and Qingxia Liu from Chemical Engineering, U of A). In

addition, she had past industrial collaborations with Xerox on the study of wetting and adhesion of inks,

and with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company on the separation and sorting of carbon nanotubes.

Academically, Dr. Tang’s computational group works widely with experimentalists to provide in silico

material characterization and design. For example, she collaborates with Dr. Hasan Uludag (Chemical

and Biomedical Engineering, U of A) on polymer-based nano carrier for gene delivery therapeutics, with

Dr. Cagri Ayranci (Mechanical Engineering, U of A) on shape memory polymer composites reinforced with

carbon nanofibers, and with Dr. Alidad Amirfazli (Mechanical Engineering, York University) on drop

actuation using capillary tweezers, to name a few.
