Double Sawtooth Star
6 inch (9 inch, 12 inch) block Made up of 3 fabrics Cut from Fabric A – Center Star 1 square -‐ 2 inches (2 ¾ inches, 3 ½ inches) 8 squares – 1 5/8 inches (2 inches, 2 3/8 inches) Fabric B – Non Star portions 4 squares – 1 ¼ inches (1 5/8 inches, 2 inches) 4 rectangles – 1 ¼ by 2 inches (1 5/8 by 2 ¾ inches, 2 by 3 ½ inches) 4 squares – 2 inches (2 ¾ inches, 3 ½ inches) 4 rectangles – 2 by 4 inches (2 ¾ by 5 ½ inches, 3 ½ by 7 inches) Fabric C – Large Star 8 squares – 2 3/8 inches (3 inches, 3 7/8 inches) Begin by sewing the 4 flying geese for the smaller star
Using the 8 – 1 5/8 inch squares from Fabric A and the 4 – 1 ¼ by 2 inch rectangles from Fabric B, separate into piles of 1 rectangle and 2 squares. Place a Fabric A square onto one end of a Fabric B rectangle. Draw a line from the center top corner of the square diagonally to the lower outer corner.
Sew along the drawn line. Then trim leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.
Take another 2 inch Fabric A square and line it up with the other end of the rectangle, making sure that there is overlap with the first square.
The overlap ensures a ¼ inch seam allowance for sewing the flying geese into the larger quilt block.
Trim excess fabric carefully leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance at the top triangle and press open.
Repeat this process until you have 4 flying geese blocks. Next step is to assemble the inner star. Lay out the 9 pieces to the smaller star as shown. They are the 4 flying geese we just sewed, the center Fabric A 2 inch square and the 4 Fabric B 1 ¼ inch squares.
Take the top row (1 ¼ inch Fabric B square, flying geese with the point inward, and the second 1 ¼ inch square). Sew the three pieces together using ¼ inch seams. Sew an identical row together resulting in two rows that look exactly the same.
Next sew the center row using 2 flying geese and the center Fabric A 2 inch square. Attach the flying geese to either side of the center square with the point facing inward.
Press the seams for the center row inward and the seams for the top and bottom rows outward. This will make matching the corner points easier. Sew the top row to the center row, making sure that the star points are pointing outward, and then sew the bottom row to the whole assembly.
Press smaller star seams open. Sew larger star flying geese using the Fabric C squares and the 2 by 4 inch Fabric B rectangles, following the same instructions as for the smaller flying geese. Trim and press to the correct size.
Start to assemble the larger star. Again, lay out the pieces as you want to sew them. Place the Fabric B 2 inch squares in the corners, the larger flying geese at the top, bottom and either side, carefully pointing the star points outward and the smaller star as the center of the quilt block.
Sew the three pieces of the top and bottom rows together and press the seams outward. Sew the larger flying geese to the smaller Sawtooth Star block with the star points pointing outward. Press the seams toward the middle. Sew all three rows together. Here you have the Double Sawtooth Star Quilt Block
