Sleepy Hollow for Two Bass Flutes and PianoInspired by a visit to upstate New York’s beautiful and notoriously haunted Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Dorff has created an atmospheric yet spooky work for the perfectly-suited scoring of Two Bass Flutes and Piano. SLEEPY HOLLOW was commissioned by Wendy Stern and Peter Sheridan as a postscript to the composer’s Sonata (Spirit of the Hudson).

More Music for Low Flutesby Daniel DorffSonata (Spirit of the Hudson) for Bass Flute and PianoPeter Sheridan’s commission for a bass flute sonata led Dorff’s imagination straight to the Hudson River. Inspired by the instrument’s broadly streaming richness, the composer’s thoughts were drawn to the mighty Hudson, unaware that Sheridan had grown up right there on an island just off Manhattan. Dorff was guided by the river’s deep primal nature, and by life within the river and on its shores long before humans arrived. A slow Mvt. 1 “Sprawling, burbling” flows attacca into the rapid Mvt. 2 “Sparkling, glistening.” This is followed by another slow-fast pair: Mvt. 3 “Under Winter” which gently leads directly into Mvt. 4 “Spring Spirits.” Either pair of movements may be performed on its own as a shorter concert segment.

Desert Dusk for Alto Flute and Cello A visit to Desert Hot Springs in California’s Coachella Valley was the inspiration for Dorff’s 9-minute DESERT DUSK, scored for the strikingly rich duo of Alto Flute and Cello. The music begins by reveling in Eden-like beauty and mimicking a distant mourning dove, interrupted by a dramatic windstorm which then gives way to the desert sunset. DESERT DUSK is a unique addition to the Alto Flute’s chamber and recital repertory.

Fireworks for Flute OrchestraTo mark its 50th anniversary, the Flute Society of Washington commissioned Daniel Dorff to compose a celebratory work for large flute ensemble, to premiere en masse at its 2016 convention. Dorff responded with FIREWORKS, a 5-minute dazzler scored for 2 piccolos, 4 C flutes, 2 altos, 2 basses, and 1 contrabass. FIREWORKS features many passages depicting pyrotechnic extravaganzas, with crisp upward whooshes exploding into downward sprinkles, often punctuated by a pop at the top.

It Takes Four to Tango for 2 C Flutes, Alto Flute (or 3 C Flutes) and Bass FluteA perennial and sultry favorite, IT TAKES FOUR TO TANGO is Dorff’s most-recorded composition. Available in many instrumentations transcribed by the composer, the flute quartet version is scored for 2 C Flutes, Alto Flute (or 3rd C Flute), and Bass Flute.

Musetta Steps Out for Mixed Flute QuartetUsing the beautiful Musetta’s Waltz from Puccini’s “La Bohème” as a jumping-off point, Daniel Dorff offers flute quartets an opportunity to swing like a big band from the jazz era. While the Bass Flute “drives the bus” like a string bass and rhythm section, the Piccolo, C Flute, and Alto Flute take turns playing lead, showcasing each player and the unique color of their instrument. Suitable for high school through professional quartets.
