PROMOTING THE VISION: By the Year 2020 more visitors will be attracted to The Bahamas by Bahamian Art,Culture and Heritage than by sun, sand and sea.

The Sew n Sew Quilters are a group of ladies from diverse back-grounds who meet on a weekly basis to share their ideas and skills in

the art of quilting as well as to get together and socialize which wasthe purpose of quilting circles when they were first formed by ladies,

particularly in the island communities, whose husbands were out at seafor long periods of time.

The ladies work independently on their own quilt projects within thegroup. Sometimes they have formal lessons, but more often they spendtheir time helping each other with a project, whether pertaining to a

quilt or assisting with a particular charity event. At their meetings,books, movies and news are discussed, jokes are told and treats areshared the purpose is to have a relaxing and pleasant time together.

Quilting in The Bahamas has become popular once again, statedDoongalik Manager, Pam Burnside, and I am happy to see this form ofcommunal activity returning to the country as we can certainly usemore of it. The quilting community is also becoming more integratedinto the fine art scene and I think that it is important to embrace andshowcase those persons who produce high quality work. There is noneed for there to be a separation between fine art and folk art be-cause we can all benefit from our creative talents if we focus on excel-lence.

President of the group, Margaret Finlayson stated, Many of us have

been quilting for more than 20 years while others are just beginning,but collectively we are proud to be able to show our work at Doongalik

Studios.

The Exhibition will be open to the public until Saturday, October 19. Gal-lery hours are Monday to Friday from 10am 4pm and on Saturdaysfrom 9am 1pm.

TRANSFORMING SPACES 2014Thursday, 3rd April through Sunday, 6th April

ARTIST CALL DEADLINE IS THIS FRIDAY

Transforming Spaces is an annual art tourthat takes place in Nassau, The Bahamastwo weeks prior to Easter. The event has be-come widely acclaimed as one of the moresignificant cultural events in the archipelago.Patrons are carried via bus to several galler-ies throughout the island of New Providence

accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide.The theme for 2014 is WATER and it is in-tended to identify, provoke and projectthoughts on the topic of water and its place inour individual and/or collective experi-ences. Artists are encouraged to investigate,exploit and reveal the possibilities of waterand all that its properties have to offer.WATER can be used literally, figuratively orsymbolically to guide individual narratives. Inthis context WATER can become, for exam-

ple, a subject, a metaphor, a material andmore..it should manifest itself as the focalpoint in the creation of a single work/projectdesigned for this event.

We invite artists to participate in this mile-stone event, which is open to all artists resid-ing in The Bahamas, Bahamians practicingabroad, or artists working, particularly, inother Caribbean countries. In order to be eli-gible, artists are asked to complete the initial

Jackson Burnside's painting entitled 'Feel

The Spirit' (pictured below). They did an

AWESOME job! We look forward to the re-

sults from the students of the Wednesday

class who will be using paints to produce
