    INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Under the theme “Positive Energy for Positive Change”, the exhi-bition of art work produced by approximately 50 students of aSummer Art Workshop sponsored by the Inter-American Devel-

opment Bank, in collaboration with Creative Nassau and theNorth East Pastors Alliance, was a tremendous success! TheBahamas Country Office of the IDB launched the Summer ArtWorkshop as a part of their mandate - ‘Improving Lives by En-gaging in Local Communities’. The workshops were held at twocommunity locations: Bethel Baptist Church on Meeting Street, and Gladtidings Tabernacle on Kemp Road. The students, rang-ing from 9 – 14 years of age, were mentored by art teacher, Yu-tavia George and architectural student, Kirkwood Deal, whosegoal was to tap into their creative minds and provide a channel

for their expression through the arts. The students also produced

ROBIN HARDY—Occupying a traditional ‘old home’ means that mainte-

nance is a constant. Pieces of discarded native Abaco pine from the up-

stairs porch have been refashioned by Robin into these beautiful pens with

an exquisite desk set for me (below)! Look at the wonderful grain lines on

    this wood!

    NEW ITEMS

HENRY DAVIS—Speaking of ‘down home’ items, we welcome Henry

and his exciting new duo of Stories of The Bahamas, in particular from CatIsland, along with an accompanying CD of songs in the traditional acapella

style— the official Launch is coming soon!

On Thursday, August 27th, 2015, from 11am—7pm one artist and one musi-cian will take to Pompey Square for an 8-hour live art and music showcase.Dubbed “Freestyle: Outside the Lines pt. 1,” Allan P. Wallace, of recentcelebrity salt portraiture fame, and Arthol Gibson, local hip-hop and chillhouse DJ also known as Ampero, hope to raise funds in support of two very

    worthy causes.

Both artists recognize the importance of giving back to their respective artis-tic communities and helping make things a little bit easier for the next gen-eration of young Bahamian creatives. Chosen as beneficiaries of the eventwill be the Art Supply Drive, which raises gently used or new art materials toease the financial burden of art students in the government school system. The Rhythm ‘N’ Youth Rake & Scrape Ensemble, born out of Gerald CashPrimary School, is another fantastic initiative led by Nathaniel Adams thatensures the cultural sustainability of our most precious traditional musical

    expression.

According to Wallace, “I want to give back […and at this event] I’m going tobe out there wildin’ out, just painting. That’s why I wanted to be a part of it.Freestyle should be about changing the energy of the downtown space,

creating positive vibes and connecting with the wider community.” Membersof the public are invited to bring a brush and jam with the artist and also

donate materials on site for the Art Supply Drive.

On the music side, DJ Ampero expects to surprise the audience with hisrange of musical taste as well as with guests performers who will visitthroughout the day, including the talented Rhythm ‘N’ Youth ensemble.Ampero envisions that, “the next generation [of Bahamian musicians] willhave so many opportunities and avenues available to them. I see things justgetting a bit more amplified with people seeing more opportunities to tap into

their creative value and expressing themselves.”The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit
