Statement-Strengths: I have a very broad range of life experience.

Having spent over twenty five years first as an International Organizer, then as Administrative Assistant to the International President, and finally as an International Vice-President for the Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees International Union (UNITE HERE), I have considerable skills in organizing, administration and contract negotiation. While holding the above positions, I simultaneously served as Financial Secretary-Treasurer of the Dining Car Employees Union, Local 43, where I conducted all financial matters of the local, including establishing and managing the budget, filing financial reports to the International Union and several state and

federal agencies.

After officially retiring in 2006, I was invited to work for the Inner Voice Inc. as Director of Homeless Veterans. I subsequently moved to Director of Emergency Shelter Programs and finally to Director of Business Operations.

In 2012 I was asked to return to the union and assist Local 43 in responding to a failed audit. Upon completion of that task, I was asked to serve as a Legislative Consultant, representing the International Union in all transportation matters on Capitol Hill.

Aside from residing in the 4th Ward, I also work in the ward and conduct most of my personal business in the ward. My dentist, insurance agent, Naprapath and physician are all situated in the 4th ward. My youngest daughter is also a recent graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr. College Prep High School. Thus, I have had and continue to have a vested interest in the welfare of the 4th Ward.

I have a reputation for my integrity, honesty and compassion. Most importantly, I possess a keen ability to consider all sides of any issue and a determination to see that all sides of every issue are heard and represented fairly.

Finally, I have been deeply involved in mentorship and support programs, such as the Mankind Project, Fathers Families and Healthy Communities and the Safer Foundation. I am currently mentoring several community youth. I also am deeply involved in community groups and am currently working to form a new organization that encourages the facilitation of block clubs and other community-related events.

Statement-Opinion: I believe that the most pressing issue facing the 4th Ward and the City of Chicago is a disconnect (real or perceived) between the constituents and Ward/City leaders. Currently, there exists, an obvious mistrust of our leadership and that above all must be addressed. Other issues are violence, which leaves many residents and businesses feeling unsafe; economic instability that undermines many of the city's core institutions and an unequal distribution of the City's resources.

I offer that the social and economic healing of the Ward and the City must begin with a tireless effort to reach out to all of the stakeholders; to listen to them, to let them know that they have been heard and to respond to them. Even when the responses are not what particular individuals or groups might want to hear, it is still important that we respond. In addition, years of experience in organized labor has taught me that it is much more productive to encourage participation of the parties we represent, rather than to have them feel left out of decisions that ultimately affect them. Thus, I would enlist and encourage the establishment of focus groups, block clubs and the like.

In a very short period of time, subsequent to a fourteen-year-old getting killed in my yard last September, I have witnessed first hand what can happen when people realize that they have more common interests than they think. Since that time, I have personally met and gotten know more of my neighbors than in the previous fifteen years. We have come together for brunches, community meetings, mentoring and street clean-ups. We look out for one another, carpool, and attend social events. My goal will be to institute a plan wherein every resident, vendor, business owner and professional in the 4th Ward recognizes their common interests and joins in the building of the kind of community that we can all be proud of.
