While “The Frozen Embryo Capital of the World,” doesn’t quite have the same panache of a sobriquet as “The BeefCapital of the World,” there’s no question that on Saturday, Hereford was the place to be in the world of cattle repro-duction.

Hundreds of thousands ofdollars were exchanged at the sale barn of Dr. Mike Mimms Saturday as buyers from as many as 15 states converged on Hereford to purchase some of the absolute best in bovine genetics, be it in proven cows, frozen embryos and extremely rare frozen bull semen – some of which has been in a cryogenic state

for more than 40 years, at theDonors Unlimited “Share the Future 5” sale.

Mimms, a Hereford native, and widely acclaimed as one of the world’s foremost beef embryologists, was the busiest man in town Saturday pressing the flesh with would-be buyers, locals who were willing to lend a hand to make the show run smoothly, and taking a hands-on approach when rising dust in the show ring required a dousing of water.

Advances in embryology,

according to Mimms, have supplanted – somewhat – the importance of bulls in the world of animal husbandry, and expanded the reproduc-tive capacities of cows to levels previous generations could only dream of.

Prior to frozen embryol-ogy, most of the importance was given to the bull, and it was the passing along of the prized traits with the best available cow that was the

standard for the industry.Advances in the field have

allowed for the same traits, only now in a prized cow, to be harvested and capitalized upon.

“The technology has madethe female an important aspect of genetics,” Mimms said.

“This is all about multiply-ing the genetics of the cow,” Mimms said.

Case in point: Using natural fertilization, even the most prolific of cows will calve only once a year, producing at best 10 to 12 calves over her lifetime.

“I’ve produced as many as 36 calves from one cow, all o

p y36 calves from one cow, all of which were born within aweek of each other,” Mimms said Saturday. “There’s not a cow in the entire world that will have 36 calves in her natural lifetime.”

For embryologists, the name of the game is finding, or creating, the best livestock possible.

The cow then undergoes a hormone regimen designed to stimulate large-scale ovu-lation.

Mimms said he has devel-oped as many as 58 embryos in one harvest from a single cow.

Not all result in a live birth, however.

Mimms said the industry average for the implantation of fertilized embryos is onlythe mid-50 percent range.

p g“We average in the mid-60s

to low-70s,” he said. It’s an impressive figure –

one that even becomes more impressive when the dollars involved are calculated.

“I had one cow – one – that generated $400,000 in directprogeny,” Mimms said. “She was responsible for generat-ing well over $1 million down the line. That’s from one cow alone.”

Mimms’ extraordinarily high success rate was not lost upon the buyers in atten-dance, and who followed the sale via the internet and live television.

Greg Sharp traveled from Beloit, Ohio to participate inthe show. It was his third trip to Hereford. A cattle breederof note himself, Sharp said it

was the opportunity to pur-chase a new line of genetics to increase the individual cattle-men’s programs that brought him and others to town.

“There’s not a lot of people in the cattle business you want to partner up with, but Mike is one you want,” Sharp said.

Cattle reproduction, Sharp said, “is a crap shoot at best,” but when dealing with an ex-pert the level of Mimms, the odds stacked up large in favor of the breeders.

Sharp broke into an ear-to-ear grin when asked if the trip to Hereford was worth the effort.

“It sure is. I enjoy working with Mike and would like to come here more often, but you can get pretty busy in this business.”

Lawrence Kennedy Jr.Sept. 25, 1958—April 23, 2009

Lawrence Kennedy Jr. went peacefully home to be with his Heavenly Father at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday night, April 23, in the presence of family and friends. The Visitation/Wake was held at Johnson’s Funeral Home

at 2 p.m. on April 26, 2009. A service celebrating his life was held at 10 a.m. April 27, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Burial followed in Lawnhaven Memo-rial Gardens. Pallbearers were Bo Briley, Shane Herrick, Drew Kennedy, Walt May, and the “Bob Brothers” Danny Knox, and Jimmy Reich.

Lawrence was recently preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Kennedy Sr.

He is survived by one son Jonathan Kennedy of Mansfield; two daughters, Julie Kennedy Wood and husband Clayton

Wood of Mansfield and Michelle Kennedy of San Angelo; his mother, Doris and her husband Bob Huckert of Her-eford; his step-mother, Helen Kennedy of San Angelo and her family; two sisters, Drenda and husband Shane Her-rick of Kiowa, Colo. and Lisa and husband Jason Avent of Canyon; his fathers’ three hilarious brothers; his aunts and uncles; several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Lawrence was born on Sept. 25, 1958, in Winters. He and his parents moved to Arlington, TX, where he graduated from Bowie High School in 1977. He first at-tended West Texas State University and later transferred to Angelo State University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. A long-time San Angelo resident, Lawrence was married for 24 years to Nancy Kennedy, the mother of his three children. He was hired at Trashaway while a student at ASU, where he was employed alongside his father. The first position he held was as a mechanic and truck driver. At the time Lawrence retired in 2007, he was the Area President of the West Texas Region.

Lawrence gave back to the public through his involve-ment in several community organizations and services. Some of his philanthropies included: several elected positions in the Angelo State University Alumni Board to include President, Board Member in the San Angelo Planning Commission, Executive Vice President of the West Texas Boy Scout Council, and a Board Member of the Better Business Bureau.

Lawrence had a passion for hard work, horsepower, traveling, hunting, and golf. Although he departed this earth at an early age, he will leave lasting memories in the many lives he touched.

The family would like to express their heartfelt ap-preciation and gratitude to his doctors and the staff that cared for Lawrence at both Shannon Medical Center and Regency House, the caring staff of hospice including Jean and “Nurse Kratchett,” and loving family members and exceptionally faithful friends that were with Lawrence when he needed them most.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Angelo State University Alumni Associa-tion, where the Lawrence Kennedy Jr. Scholarship Fund has been formed.

Brant Shores came to town from Clarendon, Texas.

“I’m here to buy high qual-ity cattle, plain and simple,” Shores said. “There are some of the best donors in the country here today. I’m look-ing for a good quality, highly functional female capable of producing seed-stock, show quality animals.”

After viewing the many lots of cows up for sale, James Mitchell of Wolfforth, Texas, took a break inside the sale barn and enjoyed a, what else, hamburger.

“I’m up here to see the cattle, and the embryos and the latest thing in reproduc-tive technology,” Mitchell said.

“You could say I’m here to see the very edge of the cut-ting edge in the technology.”

Mitchell wouldn’t confirm if he actually planned to buy, but he admitted to having a sale number.

“You never know … if something comes up that will help us move our program for-ward, anything’s possible.”

As far as Mitchell is con-cerned, in the world of cattle reproduction, they don’t come any better than Dr. Mike Mimms.

“Oh yes sir, he’s the best there is,” Mitchell said of Mimms. “He’s f lushed some cows for us and placed some embryos for us, and we’re proud to call him a friend – an extremely good friend.”

Lawrence Kennedy Jr.

was certain the two auto mechanics scholarships to be funded by the rally “will be very significant.”

The event commemorates Philip Foster, a local busi-nessman and child safety

advocate who was killed in November 2007 when his motorcycle was hit by a car. Foster was working on the annual Toys for Tots campaign at the time of his death.

Plans are already under-way for the 3rd Annual event

Scholarship Fund has been formed.

standard for the industry.Advances in the field have

allowed for the same traits, only now in a prized cow, to be harvested and capitalized upon.

“The technology has made the female an important aspect of genetics,” Mimms said.

“This is all about multiply-ing the genetics of the cow,” Mimms said.

Case in point: Using natural fertilization, even the most prolific of cows will calve only once a year, producing at best 10 to 12 calves over her lifetime.

“I’ve produced as many as 36 calves from one cow, all of which were born within a week of each other,” Mimms said Saturday.

Mimms said the industry average for the implantation of fertilized embryos is only the mid-50 percent range.

“We average in the mid-60s to low-70s,” he said.

It’s an impressive figure – one that even becomes more impressive when the dollars involved are calculated.

“I had one cow – one – that generated $400,000 in direct progeny,” Mimms said. “She was responsible for generat-ing well over $1 million down the line. That’s from one cow alone.”

Mimms’ extraordinarily high success rate was not lost upon the buyers in atten-dance, and who followed the sale via the internet and live television.

Greg Sharp traveled from Beloit, Ohio to participate in the show. It was his third trip to Hereford. A cattle breeder of note himself, Sharp said it

was the opportunity to pur-chase a new line of genetics to increase the individual cattle-men’s programs that brought him and others to town.

With six confirmed cases of swine flu already in the state of Texas, local authorities are urging residents to take precau-tions against the highly virulent strain that has killed more than 149 people in Mexico. As of Tuesday morning, there are 50 confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S.

The roar of the heavy metal thunder was everywhere in Hereford this weekend, but little sparks or lightning as local law enforcement of-ficials said there was not a single incident involving the estimated 600 motorcyclists who converged on the city for the 2nd Annual Philip Foster Scholarship Bike Rally.

“We think the event went off really well,” said Randy Laing, president of the Here-ford Motorcycle Association, which hosted the event at the Hereford Elks Lodge.

Laing said the motorcyclist with the longest drive to at-tend the event traveled 326 miles, from Grand Prairie, Tx., but other riders traveled from as far as Colorado and Kansas. An estimated 120 riders drove in from New Mexico.

The oldest rider was an 85 -yea r-o ld who d rove his Harley-Davidson from Fritch.

The two-day event featured a car show and a cook-off, Laing said, with many of the participants camping out at the Elks Lodge.

“Most everybody who vis-ited was really pleased,” Laing said, “and told us they

had a great time.”Guadalupe Barbecue Zone

took home the “Overall Grand Champion” award from the cook off, Laing said.

George Pacheco and the San Jose Men’s Group cap-tured 1st Place in the ribs competition; Mescan Tod Barbecue took home 1st Place in brisket and Freddie Valdez and The Boyz were awarded 1st Place in beans.

Hereford Pol ice Chief David Wagner reported no motorcycle-related incidents over the weekend.

“There were no problems …none whatsoever,” Wagner said. “We think that every-thing went really well.”

Laing thanked local of-ficials for helping make the event a success.

“We think this was very beneficial for the community, but we’d also like to thank all of the local authorities for their help and support.”

Laing said a final tally of proceeds f rom the two-day event have yet to be calculated, but added he

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Corp. could be ma-jority owned by the federal government and the United Auto Workers under a mas-sive restructuring plan laid out Monday that will cut 21,000 U.S. factory jobs by next year and phase out the storied Pontiac brand.

The plan, which includes an offer to swap roughly $27 billion in bond debt for GM stock, would leave current shareholders holding just 1

percent of the century-old company, which is fighting for its life in the worst auto sales climate in 27 years.

GM is living on $15.4 bil-lion in government loans and faces a June 1 deadline to restructure and get more government money. If the restructuring doesn’t satisfy the government, the strug-gling company could go into bankruptcy protection.

GM said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange

Commission that it will ask the government to take more than 50 percent of its com-mon stock in exchange for canceling half the govern-ment loans to the company as of June 1. The swap would cancel about $10 billion in government debt.

In addition, GM is offering the UAW stock for at least 50 percent of the $20 billion the company must pay into a union run trust that will take over retiree health care ex-

penses starting next year.If both are successful, the

government and UAW health care trust would own 89 per-cent of GM stock, with the government holding more than a 50 percent stake, CEO Fritz Henderson said in a news conference at GM’s Detroit headquarters.

President Barack Obama’s administration said in a state-ment that the bond exchange filing is an important step in GM’s restructuring but the

administration has not made a final decision about taking stock for part of its loans.

“The interim plan that GM laid out in this filing reflects the work GM has done since March 30 to chart a new path to financial viability. We will continue to work with GM’s management as it refines and finalizes this plan and with all of GM’s stakeholders to help GM restructure consistent

While “The Frozen Embryo Capital of the World,” doesn’t quite have the same panache of a sobriquet as “The Beef Capital of the World,” there’s no question that on Saturday, Hereford was the place to be in the world of cattle repro-duction.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars were exchanged at the sale barn of Dr. Mike Mimms Saturday as buyers from as many as 15 states converged on Hereford to purchase some of the absolute best in bovine genetics, be it in proven cows, frozen embryos and extremely rare frozen bull semen – some of which has been in a cryogenic state

for more than 40 years, at the Donors Unlimited “Share the Future 5” sale.

She has earned her spot at the top of the Hicks and Miller lineup with hitslike their top-selling bull calf – by Heat Wave – in 2006, a son that will see use in their herd next fall, and every female she has produced that has been retained. Hertwo spring-born calves by Milkman are two of the best prospects ever produced in their program and more are on the way next fall. This is a push-button beautythat covers all the basics from fertility to milk to profit and she adds elements of beauty and versatility with a classic show ring pedigree that we all know how tomake work. She has averaged 8 embryos on three lifetime flushes and her popularity will only grow once you get to see her. You’ll go far with this one!Hicks/Miller Cattle

Chunky Monkey is fulfilling his promise as a potent sire of leading Charolais and Charolais-cross quality torely on. Few bulls of any breed are as consistent when it comes to workable birth weights, excellent vigor, reliable quality, and SERIOUS muscle. His first crop included several top-sellers and show winners includingthe 2009 San Antonio Champion Charolais Steer and the popular Denver display bull, Copper Penny – toname two. The 2010 Mimms Club Calf Auction featured a steer calf at $8,000 and the 2008 auction offeredthree steer calves by Chunky Monkey – out of five produced in the fall crop – and they sold for the stagger-ing average price of $9,367 per head with a top of $20,000 on a crossbred steer and a purebred that sold for$6,900. The 2008 Sullivan/Bar A Calf Sale featured a Chunky Monkey x Take Charge steer calf that sold for$16,500, and the Chunky Monkey heifer calves are making favorite replacements across the country. Thecalves are born with moderate birth weights and they explode with muscle and quality.

Chunky Monkey is one of the only available sons of the deceased, $150,000 champion sire, Snowpoint Formula One, and he is the right sire to complement THC or PHAC crossbred cows while adding predictable Charolais influence and color. The purebred progeny look great also as Chunky Monkey iscontributing muscle, fleshing ability, and a more moderate frame score. There is no doubt that ChunkyMonkey is a force to be reckoned with in the industry, especially as his easier fleshing, muscular, good-looking daughters come into production. The large embryo offering selling here is some ofthe last embryos recovered from Donor 36, one of the most profitable and consistent cows ever to work in Hereford. She isthe dam of more than $17,000 on seven head sold in the 2005 Mimms sale plus more than 85% of her calves have sold in the $25-4500 range regardless of thesire she has been matched with. Yousimply do not find many females, if any, that combine the fundamental soundness withthe extreme shape and design that 029 puts together. She has produced $201,000+worth of progeny sales in just over four years. Her first two natural calves were sired byMaine Break, with the first one selling for $9,000, and the second, a popular son that waslater named Johnny Cash, selling for $25,000. In the 2005 Sweetheart Sale alone, fivepregnancies by Maine Break, Heat Seeker, and Heat Wave from Cow 029 sold for $25,000and later produced Double Whammy, the high-premium herd sire at K-Bar Ranch, OK.Donor 029 is not for the faint of heart but she defies logic as the ultimate combination ofextreme style and power with maternal soundness. She is definitely a unique beast andshe is proven to reproduce in kind. Her 2006 calf crop featured a daughter by Heat Wave that sold for $6,000 and twobull calves that sold for $4,100 and $2,500 in the 2007 Mimms Club Calf Auction, and our 2007 Share the Future Sale fea-tured a newborn ET daughter by Heat Wave that sold to Greg Taylor, MI, and later won as a young show heifer in her onlytime out. That HeatWave son later was selected as the Reserve Grand Champion Prospect Steer of the WichitaMountains Classic, the Oklahoma State AGR Preview, and the Superbowl Jackpot Show. She was a top selection from the Spring Cow Herd Dispersalat Sullivan Ranch and it is hard to imagine a 734 daughter any stouter or cooler than Ruby 812M. Her 2007 spring crop featured the best bull prospect produced in the Sul-livan Ranch program and her natural Heat Wave steer from 2006 sold for $7,600 along with an impressive pair of daughters that averaged $4,300 in the 2007 Sullivan RanchSale. The Ruby 812 progeny have all been big boned, very hairy and thick with a cool, sound design. This is the right kind – what a cow!Mimms Cattle Ruby 812M will be on display sale day
