The Bethesda Hospital Foundation is anot-for-profit organization established as the Gulf Stream Hospital Associationin 1947 to support Bethesda MemorialHospital, which opened in 1959 and hasgrown to be Palm Beach County’s mostcomprehensive hospital.

Its purpose is to assist the Hospital inaccomplishing its mission through theacquisition, management anddisbursement of philanthropic assets and by building support of the Hospitalwithin the community.

The Foundation has embarked on theCARING FOR OUR COMMUNITYCAMPAIGN in support of BethesdaHealth. We are proud to share with youour goals and our progress towards those goals in the following pages.

Philanthropy makes exceptional healthcare possible. Without

philanthropy, Bethesda would not be the state-of-the-art

healthcare provider you have come to know and expect. In fact,

philanthropy contributes as much as 50% or more of the

hospital’s bottom line each year. Gifts from donors have made

programs, centers and initiatives mentioned here possible.

In 2010 Bethesda Hospital Foundation embarked on a new campaignin support of Bethesda Health. We called it Caring for our Community,because that is Bethesda’s mission.

Caring for our Community reaches into every segment of BethesdaHealth. As a not-for-profit, community-based hospital, we are here toserve everyone in the community. While striving to maintain medicalexcellence, Bethesda has become a regional center of innovationproviding the highest level of patient care.

Our Need

So that we may successfully continue to serve the community’shealthcare needs well into the future and reflecting the medicaladvances and technology that our residents deserve, our Caring forour Community Campaign will allow Bethesda to stay at the forefrontof medical technology and progressive patient care, while remaininga not-for-profit, community-owned hospital.

Philanthropy Together

As a non-profit hospital, Bethesda is a community asset.

We have counted on you, and your support has made us a world-classhealthcare provider. In our last campaign, the Foundation raisedmore than $110 million from nearly 10,000 individuals, corporationsand foundations, with some making gifts as modest as a few dollarsand some as exceptional as millions. Together, these funds havecreated the Centers of Excellence that have made Bethesda the most comprehensive hospital in Palm Beach County.

Our Goals

Every contribution is vital and helpsus fulfill our mission. Our goal is toraise $60 million. We are proud toannounce that we have reached thehalf-way mark, $30 million. Thesefunds are being used to support fourbasic strategic goals:

There are two listings in thispublication. The first listrecognizes annual gifts andpledges of $500 or more madein the fiscal year, which endedSeptember 30, 2013. The listincludes gifts to the annualfund, capital and endowmentfunds, memorial fund, gifts-in-kind and special events. Donors who made payments on previous pledges this yearare not listed here, but arerecognized in the lifetime giving section.

The second list recognizesdonors whose cumulative giftsand pledges exceed $5,000.There are several donorrecognition clubs, whichacknowledge various givinglevels. Donors whose nameshave an asterisk next to theirname made payments this year on previouslyacknowledged pledges.

Peter and Mary Blum

The most significant gifts to anorganization can happen in fortuitous andserendipitous ways. Mary Morrell-Blum,chairman of the Foundation Board ofDirectors for the past three years,celebrated her birthday in June. Herhusband, Peter Blum, wanted to give hera gift that was both significant andmeaningful. As her birthday neared, hecame up with the idea of naming theBenefactors Pavilion at BethesdaHospital East in her honor. At a surpriseluncheon for Mrs. Blum, the gift wasmade and announced to her, and theirfriends and family.

With this naming, Mr. Blum made acontribution of $2 million to Bethesda.“Because we both feel so blessed withour health and our marriage, I wanted tohonor Mary with a gift that reflected this,”said Mr. Blum.

The Benefactors Pavilion is now calledthe Peter and Mary Blum BenefactorsPavilion. And it could not be more fitting.

Two of the Foundation’s most involvedand hardworking board membersthought it was important enough toshare their good fortune with theHospital by naming one of our mostimportant Centers of Excellence.

Mr. Blum’s support of our communityspans half a century, and he hasimpacted the lives of so many in ourarea through his continued generosityand leadership while calling SouthFlorida home. He became a Benefactorto the Hospital in 2002 and has servedon the Bethesda Hospital FoundationBoard since 2006. In that time, he hassupported many hospital programs andinitiatives and created the BlumScholarships to support the collegeeducation of Bethesda employees.

“We can’t believe our good fortune andthe friendship and support of these twoextraordinary philanthropists,” said KayHarvey, Foundation Executive Director.

Lighting the Wayfor a Brighter Future

The Beacon Societymembers are thosevisionary and generousdonors who providethe highest level ofsupport of BethesdaHealth. Each BeaconSociety donor hasmade a commitmentof $1 million andabove. Their generosityhas supported theefforts of theFoundation and willallow Bethesda tocontinue offering thehighest level of qualityhealthcare in a caringmanner to allmembers of ourcommunity.

As we began our new campaign, Caringfor Our Community, the late Mrs. JeanSpence was the first to step forward tomake a lead gift of $5 million. Her giftwill be permanently recognized atBethesda Hospital East with the newJean Spence Emergency Department.

Mrs. Spence supported Bethesda sincethe early 1990s in various ways, and shewas a shining example of how one personcould have a tremendous impact. At thebeginning of the Foundation’s first capitalcampaign in 2002, the $100 MillionCommunity Challenge Campaign, Mrs.Spence’s philanthropic commitment wasmore fully realized to help Bethesdaestablish one of our most prestigious andcritical Centers of Excellence—BethesdaHeart Hospital.

This Campaign wasBethesda’s largestcapital expansion in itsmore than 50-yearhistory, and it createdand expanded numerousCenters of Excellence.The expansion includedincreasing the hospital’soverall size by 80,000 square

feet, doubling the size of the EmergencyDepartment and the number of privatebeds, creating a new Main Lobby andMain Entrance, expanding and updatingthe Pediatrics Department in theChildren’s Center, expanding theComprehensive Cancer Center to includean oncology inpatient unit and outpatientfacilities, and creating and endowing boththe Cornell Institute for RehabilitationMedicine and the Driskill Center forCaring Excellence.

Mrs. Spence enjoyed giving to help othersand wanted to better our community. Atthe time of her gift, she said she wantedto inspire others to do the same.Foundation Chairman Mary Morrell-Blumsays, “It is our honor to remember Mrs.

Spence for her loving and kind spiritand the philanthropy that so

defined her life. We are proudand honored that she choseBethesda as a deservingrecipient of her philanthropyand kindness. And, of course,

we do hope that her gift doeswhat she wanted—to inspireothers to give as generously as

they can to support theircommunity hospital.”

Eloise Kimmelman Foundation

Eloise and David Kimmelman weresupporters of healthcare in ourcommunity during their lifetime.Married for 48 years until Mrs.Kimmelman passed away in 1997, Mr. Kimmelman was a patient atBethesda during the last decade until he passed away in 2005.

Mr. Kimmelman’s estate became theEloise Kimmelman Foundation devotedto education and medical treatment for cardiovascular disease. The EloiseKimmelman Foundation made a pledgeto create the Kimmelman Center forInterventional Cardiovascular Treatmentand Research at Bethesda Hospital West.

As the population grows older, thesecardiovascular and peripheral arterydisesases grow as well. We areenormously grateful to the KimmelmanFoundation for its generosity and vision.

With the opening of Bethesda Hospital Westone year ago, the Foundation commemoratedthe pioneering families that developed andmaintained the land on which our hospitalstands and from which our community hasgrown.

Our community’s history is entwined with thehistory of these families who saw thecommunity’s promise and future. Long beforelarge tracts of houses, schools, fire stations or hospitals, these generations of farmerstended the land we now call home.

As we look to the future, we honor the farming community and the families that are represented here. Their rich heritage ofstewardship is a symbol of commitment,dedication and purpose, which parallelsBethesda’s values.

We thank the families who have helped usbreak ground and lay the foundation forgenerations of families who will benefit fromhaving a hospital in our community:Bethesda Hospital West was built on a 58-acre site that the Amestoy family farmedfor 30 years. The main entrance drive isnamed after the family matriarch, NancyAmestoy.

The Bedner family is still farming, and theBedner’s Farm Fresh Market is a favoritedestination for the community. The Bednersgave a gift, and in their honor, the Foundationnamed the main guest/visitor elevator fortheir family.

Bonnie Dell, daughter of Kermit Dell, is aproud descendent of a pioneering farmingfamily in our community. With her donation,the Foundation named the 5th Floor PatientWaiting Area in their honor.

The Pero family has been farming for morethan 100 years, and five generations later, thebusiness is still family-owned and operated. In recognition of their gift, the Foundationnamed the Chapel and Operating RoomsNursing Station.

Julie and John Van Lennep have devotedthemselves to horses and the equestrianindustry. With their donation, they becamemembers of the Philanthropist Society andwill have the opportunity to name an area inthe Hospital.
