Introduction

Victorians are people who lived about 100 years ago. Their life was really different to ours now. People would work from 6.00am till 6.00pm with only a 10 minute break. Life back then was really hard. There were harsh rules for men, women and children. The Queen back then was called Queen Victoria. She had control over everyone and everything. She ruled over England who had lots of power all over the world. This was called the British Empire. Now let me tell you a bit about the Queen- the Queen ruled over England from 1837 to 1901. Britain was a small country as it is now, but it had lots of power over lots of countries around the world.

The Industrial Revolution

In those times women were treated unfairly because of their gender. Would you also believe that children also had to work from the age of 5 so that they could fit under the machinery to collect pieces of thread left over. They also were forced to work for people and clean their chimneys, but they would only get paid 2 shillings, that was not enough for families who don’t work.

Victorian Schools

Victorian school! Well, what can I say about that? All I can say is I wish I wasn’t there. Victorian school is not like our school. You may think that our school is harsh but wait till you hear what I have to say about the poor children who had to go to school in those days. Their school had horrible punishments for the children who made mistakes- for instance if someone spoke without permission then the teacher would cane them on the back and put them in detention. I know I wouldn’t want to be in their place. Children would go to school early in the morning and then they would go straight to work! Children from rich families were taught at home by a governess until they were 10 years old. Once a boy turned ten, he would go away to Public school. Also Wealthy girls were mostly educated at home.

Victorian Houses

FACT!!Not all Victorian homes had indoor bathrooms and toilets. Many people used an outside toilet in the backyard or garden. Ewwwwwww........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Victorian houses are old fashioned compared to ours now. They would have slate roofs and windows which you had to slide open. People back then did not have any cars so there was no need for a garage. The houses were usually made of bricks. Every rich Victorian would have a fire place in their home but the poor people who only had a stove to keep things warm during the winter. Also if they needed to go to the bathroom then they would need to go outside because that’s where the bathroom would be! Rich people would have maids and servants working for them, which obviously means they didn’t have to do any work.

Victorian Clothes!Victorians had different clothing to us. Rich Victorian women's clothing during the 1800’s were elegant, bright and they stood out. They would have big colourful hats and long drooling dresses. They would also have their hair tied up in a bun with lots of accessories as well. Their dresses would be frilly and decorated with ribbons. Men would normally wear tall hats and a coat. Square-toed boots, black trousers, and a modern white tuxedo shirt would also suffice as the fashion in the Victorian era was mainly smart clothing. Some men would also carry a walking stick with them and have gloves of different styles, as touching women was unseemly so the gloves was a vital.

Victorian Food

Victorian’s did not buy their food in a supermarket instead they went to several small shops, all selling different types of food. Grocers’ shops sold dried goods such as tea, coffee, sugar and rice; butchers’ shops sold meat; and dairy shops sold milk, cream, eggs, butter and cheese. Basic foods were: beef, mutton, pork, bacon, cheese, eggs, bread, potatoes, rice, oatmeal, milk, vegetables in season, flour, sugar, treacle, jam and tea.

How The People Lived? The quality of life depended on whether you were rich or poor. If you were rich then life was pretty easy and comfortable but unfortunately if you were poor then you would have to work hard just for the basic things like; milk and bread. For poorer families their greatest fear was ending up in the workhouse, where thousands of homeless and penniless families were forced to live. If your family was taken into the workhouse you would be split up, also dressed in uniform and have your hair cut short. This could happen to a family if the father were taken ill and unable to work. Lots of children in poor families died of diseases like scarlet fever, measles, polio and TB which are curable today. These were spread by foul drinking water, open drains and lack of proper toilets. In overcrowded rooms if one person caught a disease it spread quickly through the rest.
