Funny that despite it's renown, I didn't really know what to expect when I decided to read Don Quixote. It's a sublimely hilarious meditation on the nature of belief, madness, religion, passion, ambition, creativity...life itself. I did have a brief period early on where I thought the 'gag' was getting a bit tired, but that was short-lived, as perhaps I realized (if only subconsciously) that this 'gag' was in fact a profound device with which to consider all of the above topics, and by the end I found myself not wanting it to end. Monty Python, at least 'Holy Grail', owes their life to this book, and in fact I couldn't stop picturing John Cleese as Don Quixote the whole time. And Ricky Gervais would make a great Sancho Panza...

The delusional Don. A riveting look into how one man's idea of making his dreams a reality resulted in total absurdity, ludicrousness, and ultimately, sagacity. Believing himself as a knight-errant to do good to everyone he encountered while roaming the countryside with his squire Sancho Panza, Quixote fabricated every incident which confronted him. The man was haunted with being enchanted...bewitched, if you will...all for self grandeur and the love of a woman-Dulcinea del Toboso. He quickly gained a reputation as a madman, a fool and on a good moment, somewhat of an intellectual...a medieval guru. Scenes such as the famous windmill adventure in which he envisioned as giants; the two armies he attacked which turned out to be sheep; setting convicts free; slashing puppets; `fighting' lions; Mambrino's helmet; falling into a cave with

several fictitious frivolities; the never-ending mocking episodes by the Duke and Duchess along with Sancho's simulated governorship; enchantment after enchantment, adventure after hilarious adventure. This translation by Rutherford is very readable. One can clearly see why Quixote is such a classic and oftentimes considered the first novel.
