Who We Are● An international, non-profit, and
humanitarian organization that provides free medical and dental services
● Students are given the unique chance to directly participate in “hands-on” diagnoses
● Constant supervision of medical professionals
● “LEARN BY DOING”
Our Objectives ● To teach students basic
clinical skills, basic Medical / Dental knowledge, and the art of medicine
● To provide students with a first-hand experience of cultural, social, historical, and political life in these regions
Dominican Republic● On the island Hispaniola in the Central American and Caribbean region between
Cuba and Puerto Rico, with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.
● Tropical climate in most of the country. The dry season is from December to April, and the rainy season is from May to November.
● Culturally rich with captivating tropical landscapes, the Dominican is the most popular destination in the Caribbean. Bordering Haiti, it offers an excellent opportunity to gain clinical experience while helping refugees in need.
● GMT Dominican invites you to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Health Care● Recent health care reform in Dominican:
●Socialized system: government provides “free” care for the poorest citizens, but is often inadequate and not all fees are covered
●Social security system: for income under RD $4000/mth ($293US). Children not covered
●Private clinics: fee-for-service care, most highly regarded treatment
● The best treatment and care are mainly offered through private clinics
● GP’s and family doctors are rare
● Most medicine is imported; therefore too expensive to be covered under Socialized System
Dr. Wilbur Johnson, M.D.President & International Medical Director
B.S. and M.D. degree from U of Illinois
Family Practice with office, hospital, OB, ER, surgery, and my family was very gratifying, but eventually very fatiguing. It was time for a change after having raised 3 children, seeing them off to their professional lives, and spending 26 years there in Galena
