Definition of DA
From March 2013“Any incident or pattern of incidents of
controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, the following types of abuse: Psychological, Physical, Sexual, Financial, Emotional”
• ‘Controlling behaviour is: a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape and regulating their everyday behaviour.
• ‘Coercive behaviour is: an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.” *

Statistics Buster..
• 2 women are killed each week by a current or ex partner
• On average a woman experiences 35 incidents of abuse before contacting the police
• 750,000 children a year (estimate) witness Domestic Abuse
• 52.6 % of children in Medway are on a Child Protection Plan where Domestic Abuse is a cause for concern (qtr 3 13/14)
• 30% of Domestic Violence starts in Pregnancy• 40% of teenagers are in abusive dating
relationships• Domestic Abuse cost society in £15.7 billion a
year (2008)
Domestic abuse in Kent and Medway
• 53% of harassment offences were domestic abuse related (558 of 1,043).
• 10% of sexual offences were domestic abuse related (188 of 1,803)
• For every 100 domestic abuse crimes recorded in Kent and Medway there were 89 arrests.
• Kent and Medway recorded 9,010 domestic crimes August 2012-August 2013
