The Story

Dolby and Philips join forces to enable the best 3D experience on any device.

Glasses are generally seen as an inhibitor to broad 3D adoption.

Glasses-free 3D solves with problem for all entertainment devices: smartphones, tablets, PCs, laptops and 3DTVs.

End-to-end system with benefits for broadcast operators and content providers, device manufacturers and mostly importantly the consumer.

Dolby 3D: What the Industry is Saying

“Even more impressive was the Dolby Labs and Phillips demo of Dolby 3D. Embodied in a 4k 54 inch display, the demo delivered bright, clear and detailed moving images. Very watchable!’

“Viewing angles were particularly impressive: even from far off to the side, the 3D effect was still present, and the picture was so crisp and clean that it almost took a minute to realize we were looking at 3D footage…it's among the first TVs we'd want to gather around with our friends and watch a movie in 3D.”

“Dolby has a glasses-free 3D display in its booth, and it is drawing big crowds. The display was co-developed by Dolby and Philips, and Dolby is showing some gorgeous 3D content to demonstrate the technology.”

“… the prototype 4K 3D TV and mobile versions being demonstrated at Dolby's NAB booth make us hopeful for the future. As with all displays -- especially those that support 3D -- you'll really need to see to believe, but we had an opportunity to do just that, and walked away very impressed.”

“...it was very impressive, and the 3D effect was quite apparent. In fact, it was the best autostereoscopic display I've ever seen.”

Dolby 3D: Recognized for Excellence

Awarded the IABM Game Changers Award – presented to five products that have great potential to revolutionize the industry.

“The 2012 NAB show presented an exciting field for our judging panel, and we look forward to watching how Dolby and other winners of the inaugural IABM Game-Changers Award help to shape the future of our industry,” said IABM Director General Peter White.

Awarded the TV Technology Mario Award – established to recognize products that represent significant technical breakthroughs – many of which have gone on to significantly impact the future of video technology.

“Mario scours the NAB show floor for the 10 most innovative products that represent the pinnacle of technical achievement. We are proud to present these awards on behalf of the ‘Masked Engineer,’” said TV Technology Editor-in-Chief Tom Butts.

The Best 3D Picture

Deliver spectacular, consistent 3D content.

Upgrades half-resolution 3D signals to full resolution by adding a low-bandwidth enhancement layer for both glasses-based and glasses-free devices.

Automatically optimizes content for the specific device and screen size.

The most comfortable, enjoyable 3D Experience

Enables viewers to customize the 3D intensity to their individual tastes

Provides the optimum balance of comfort and 3D effect regardless of where you sit—no narrow “sweet spot”

The Right Path, Future-Ready

Operators and aggregators can prepare and transmit content with the highest-quality 3D while retaining bandwidth efficiency.

Works on all TVs, so broadcasters can deploy the technology without worrying about ongoing improvements in 3D content and displays.

Available now for use in streaming applications on connected TVs, tablets and smartphones.

Optimizes the entire system for streaming or downloading content to any device by keeping the additional data needed for the enhancement layer to a minimum, typically around 10 percent

Dolby’s Footprint in Video

In 2003, Dolby acquired DemoGraFX, a pioneering technology development company in the field of image signal processing and coding, including the H.264 image coding technology resulting in Dolby’s first Emmy Award for imaging technology.

Dolby has been a leader in the cinema industry for many years. Dolby Digital Cinema was introduced in 2005 to lead the way into the digital age of cinema exhibition.

Dolby 3D was launched in 2006 for theatrical exhibition systems and is currently installed on over 8000 screens worldwide.

In 2010, Dolby launched the PRM-4200, a grade 1 video reference monitor which since then has won several awards and is on its way to replace the obsolete CRT as the state-of-the-art reference monitor.

Philips’ Footprint in Video

• Philips has been involved in video from the early days of TV, standing

also at the cradle of such diverse video products as the VCR,

professional cameras, DVD/Blu-ray and professional medical imaging

solutions.

• Similarly, Philips has made strong contributions to widely used video

coding and transmission technologies, participating from the outset in

leading video standardization bodies as MPEG, DVB, and ATSC.

• For over 10 years Philips has now been active to bring 3D to the home,

in particular glass-less 3D (autostereo); solutions range from 3D displays

to 3D transmission formats to 3D video processing. This has resulted in

one of the world’s strongest technology portfolios on autostereo for 3D

content-creation, -conversion and -format.
