15. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding‐type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong is provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

16. This apparatus must be earthed (grounded) by connecting to a correctly wired and earthed power outlet.

17. Ensure that your mains supply is in the correct range for the input power requirement of the unit.

18. In order to reduce the risk of electrical shock, the power cord must be disconnected when the power supply assembly is removed.

19. This equipment is designed to mount in a suitably ventilated 19‐inch rack; ensure that any ventilation slots in the unit are not blocked or covered.

20. The mains power disconnect device for this unit is the plug‐in mains cord rather than a power switch. The mains cord must remain readily accessible for disconnecting mains power.

Dolby 3D System Overview

Welcome to Dolby® 3D Digital Cinema!

The Dolby 3D Digital Cinema presentation system is a direct result of Dolby Laboratories’ continued leadership in the development of innovative cinema technologies. Dolby 3D Digital Cinema provides a flexible system designed to deliver the best possible experience of any playback system licensed by Dolby. Dolby has applied its vast experience with production and exhibition, processing systems, and cinema equipment design in the creation of this new 3D system. Building on the company’s unique experience as a pioneer in entertainment technologies and as a leading supplier of cinema equipment, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema provides reliability, flexibility of operation, and adaptability for the future.

A Dolby 3D presentation system consists of these components:

• Dolby DFC100 Filter Controller• A Dolby motor assembly with attached filter wheel• Projector‐specific mounting brackets• Interconnection cables

The Dolby 3D presentation system is designed as an integral part of the Dolby Digital Cinema presentation system. It interoperates with select cinema presentation systems from other manufacturers that support Dolby’s color correction methodology.

Typically, the DFC100 is mounted in the pedestal below a projector. The motor assembly is installed inside the projector. Placement and attachment of the motor assembly is different in each supported projector.

Three connections are required:

• Connection to a valid digital cinema server, over Ethernet or serial using a 9‐pin D connector

• Synchronization signal connection to the projectorʹs GPI/O port via the 37‐pin D connector on the GPI/O cable

• Control signal and status information connection to the motor assembly via the 25‐pin D connector on the motor control cable

Playback Server Validation

To ensure proper signal processing, the DFC100 verifies that it is connected to Dolby® digital cinema equipment or to a server licensed by Dolby for Dolby 3D signal processing either by Ethernet or by a 9‐pin D‐connector serial port cable.

This is an automatic process that requires no operator intervention.

When power is applied, the unit searches for an authorized server and waits. Until an authorized server is located all front‐panel LEDs flash orange, and setup or playback is not possible.

If the LEDs on your DFC100 do not stop flashing within a few seconds, contact your authorized Dolby dealer, or call 415‐558‐0200 (Dolby US) or 44‐793‐842100 (Dolby UK).


Note: When the server is replaced for any reason, you must power cycle the DFC100 to ensure proper operation. When the DFC100 powers up it will revalidate its server connection. Contact the server manufacturer if validation does not succeed.

Component Descriptions and Functions

This chapter contains sections describing these elements:

• DFC100 Front Panel • DFC100 Rear Panel• The Motor and Filter Wheel Assembly

The behaviors discussed apply only when the unit is connected to a validated digital cinema server as described in Playback Server Validation.

3.1 DFC100 Front PanelThe front panel is shown in Figure 3‐1.

The front panel contains ENABLE and DISABLE buttons that move the filter into the projector light path or remove it from the light path. It also contains three LEDs labeled filter inserted, filter spinning, and servo locked. The front‐panel USB connector is used to set software parameters and for software upgrades.

3.1.1 Button Actions

When you push ENABLE, the motor assembly begins spinning the filter wheel. After a short delay, the motor lowers the filter wheel into the light path. When you push DISABLE, the filter wheel automatically retracts from the light path.

Lit buttons serve as the power indicator for the unit. If both buttons are dark, mains power is disconnected.

3.1.2 Status LEDs

The front‐panel LEDs indicate the units status by their color.

Flashing orange indicates that the assembly is booting up or searching for an authorized supported playback server.

The filter spinning LED shows green when the motor is spinning the filter wheel. The filter inserted LED shows green when the filter is inserted into the light path. The servo locked LED shows green when the servo is locked to the projector flash reference signal.

3.1.3 Trouble Indicators

The ENABLE button flashes red whenever any of the LEDs show red to enhance the visibility of error conditions. The LEDs show red when their conditions are not met. The filter spinning LED is red if the filter is stationary while inserted. The filter inserted LED is red if the filter is not inserted when the DFC100 is enabled. The servo locked LED is red if the servo is not locked while the DFC100 is enabled.

If all the LEDs on the unit front panel are flashing orange, the unit is not connected to an authorized digital cinema server. See Playback Server Validation on page 3 for details.

3.1.4 Set-up Software and Software Update

The front‐panel USB connector is used to set up the software when the DFC100 is first placed in service, and also to perform subsequent software upgrades.

3.2 DFC100 Rear PanelThe rear panel, shown in Figure 3‐2, features the following:

• IEC AC mains power connector• 37‐pin male D‐connector GPI/O port• RJ45 Ethernet port• 25‐pin female D‐connector automation port• 25‐pin male D‐connector motor control port• 9‐pin female D‐connector RS‐232/ASCII control port

3.2.1 GPI/O Connection

The 37‐pin D‐connector GPI/O cable carries the projector’s flash reference signal. Table A‐1 shows the pins used. Pins not listed are not connected.

3.2.2 Motor Control Port

The 25‐pin D‐connector motor control cable carries power, commands, and feedback between the DFC100 and the motor assembly. Table A‐2 shows the pinout.

3.2.3 DFC100 Automation Connection

The 25‐pin D‐connector automation connector can carry enable and disable commands between the DFC100 and optional automation equipment. Table A‐3 shows the pinout.

3.3 The Motor and Filter Wheel AssemblyThe motor assembly functions identically in all supported projectors. Projector design differences sometimes require customization of the motor assembly or its associated brackets and attaching parts.



The motor assembly operates in three modes:

• 4:2 mode (48 rps, double‐flash)• 5:2 mode (60 rps)• 6:2 mode (72 rps, triple‐flash)

The motor assembly automatically determines the proper operating mode.

The motor assembly includes the following main components:

• A filter wheel that separates the left‐ and right‐eye images

• A DC motor that spins the filter wheel• A solenoid that inserts the filter wheel into the light path and removes it• A printed circuit board that receives and interprets the signals from the DFC100 and

drives the motor and solenoid• A positional sensor that generates the feedback signal needed for projector

synchronization

The motor assembly contains no user‐serviceable components and does not require direct user intervention once properly installed. Wear the gloves provided in the installation kit when unpacking and installing the filter wheel, handling the wheel by its edges.


Note: The thin, precision‐ground, optical quality glass Filter Wheel spins very fast. Never touch it while it is in motion.

Warning: Do not touch the surface of the filter wheel with bare fingers. Oil residue left on the surface of the wheel can cause hot spots, which could lead to premature failure.

Installing the DFC100

This chapter provides instructions for installing a Dolby® DFC100 Filter Controller.

The process includes these tasks:

• Preparing for an Installation• Mounting the System• Making the Cable Connections • Installing the Motor Assembly

After you install the DFC100, you must install the motor assembly before the system is functional.

4.1 Preparing for an InstallationOpen the Dolby Digital 3D Filter Controller Packing Kit (DFC100‐PK), which includes the following items:

• Mains cable (US)• Mains cable (international)• Required interconnection cables:

• GPI/O synchronization signal cable Dolby Part Number 8308590 • Motor control cable Dolby Part Number 8308600

Always use a shielded cable to connect the DFC100 to a projector.

Before applying power, observe these safety precautions:

1. Check the condition of the auditorium’s power. 2. Ensure that the system’s AC power is connected to a breaker of sufficient capacity. 3. Ensure that all the equipment is properly grounded.

4.2 Mounting the SystemThe single rack‐unit DFC100 chassis is typically mounted in the rack area underneath the projector.

Note: Certain rack‐mounted DFC100 installations may require longer cables. Contact Dolby for assistance.



4.2.1 Ensuring Proper Grounding

Various types of electrical noise may be present in and around the projection booth with no audible indications of any problem. Proper mounting and wiring of booth equipment helps ensure trouble‐free performance.

We recommend that you install star washers on all rack‐mounting screws to ensure good ground contact, as shown in the example in Figure 4‐1. This helps minimize electrical noise.

4.2.2 Ensuring Proper Ventilation

The unit has vents on four sides: top, bottom, left, and right. Leave one unit of rack space above and below the device. Take care not to block airflow to the sides.

4.3 Making the Cable ConnectionsTo function the DFC100 must have the connections shown in Figure 4‐2. Establish the connections with these steps.

1. Connect the DFC100 to an authorized server using one of the methods listed in Playback Server Validation.

2. Connect one end of the GPI/O synchronization signal cable to the GPI/O connector on the rear panel of the DFC100.

3. Route the cable as required, and connect the other end to the projector GPI/O connector.

4. Connect the male end of the motor control cable to the motor assembly or I/O panel in the projector.

Note: Follow all local codes and regulations covering electrical wiring.

Note: Be sure the small metal bracket on the connector faces the inside of the projector.

5. Tighten the connector screws to motor assembly. 6. Route the motor control cable through the projector and down to the DFC100.7. Connect the other end of the cable to the Motor Control port on the rear panel of the

DFC100.8. Connect the DFC100 to mains power.

4.4 Installing the Motor AssemblyThe DFC100 will not operate until it has been connected to a motor assembly installed inside the projector. The installation processes differ greatly between supported projectors and are described in separate manuals. Refer to the motor assembly installation manual provided with your system.

Chapter 5

Presentation SystemConfiguration

After the DFC100 and the motor assembly have been physically installed, you must reconfigure the presentation system to operate with them. The details of this process will vary for each supported presentation system. For the Dolby® Digital Cinema presentation system the procedure includes the following steps:

• Configuring the Projector for 3D Operation• Selecting Optimal Dark Time Values• Doing Color Correction in the Cinema Server• Setting the System to Recognize the DFC100

5.1 Configuring the Projector for 3D OperationThe projector parameters listed in Table 5‐1 must be set before you can proceed to calibrate the DFC100 and motor assembly. The parameter values to be used are the same for all supported projectors, but the entry fields may be named and placed differently in each user interface.

You may need to repeat these settings for each of the DFC100’s operating modes: 4:2, 5:2, or 6:2.

5.2 Selecting Optimal Dark Time ValuesWe recommend the dark time settings in μseconds listed in Table 5‐2 which are determined by the diameter of the wheel used in the projector.

5.3 Doing Color Correction in the Cinema ServerYou can maximize the light available by setting up your projector to do all color correction in the Show Player or other cinema server during 3D operation. Follow these steps:

1. Set the projector to use nominal_v2.mcgd for its measured color gamut.2. Set the projector to use DCI_Xenon.tcgd for its target color gamut.3. Proceed with the color correction step sequence listed in Chapter 8.

5.4 Setting the System to Recognize the DFC100Run the Show Store configuration script as described in the Dolby Digital Cinema Presentation System Installation and Maintenance Manual. The only necessary change is to answer Yes when asked if the auditorium contains a DFC100.


Note: The standard for dark times is still evolving, so studios or other agencies may recommend different settings. Use the setting that appears best in your auditorium.

DFC100 Setup

Before the DFC100 can be used, it must be set up. The next steps are:

• Loading the Synchronization Delay Test Content• Installing the DFC 100 Setup Software• Entering the Profile Tab Information • Preparing to Calibrate • Adjusting the Sync Delay Value• Entering the Network Information• Entering I/O Information

To accomplish these tasks you will need:

• Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or XP laptop with an optical drive• A‐to‐B USB cable• DVD containing test pattern clips (Dolby® Part Number 8202020) • CD containing the calibration software (Dolby Part Number 8202080)

The DVD and CD are provided in the Cat. No. 836 3D Installer Kit.

6.1 Loading the Synchronization Delay Test ContentProcedures for loading the test content onto each supported digital cinema system will vary. Use the following steps to load the test content onto a Dolby Digital Cinema presentation system:

1. Insert the test pattern DVD into the Show Store’s optical drive.2. Use the Show Player screen to load the sync delay test content as directed in the Dolby

Digital Cinema Presentation System User’s Manual.

6.2 Installing the DFC 100 Setup SoftwareTo install the software, perform the following steps:

1. Insert the software CD into your laptop’s optical drive.2. Run DFC100SetupInstaller.exe.3. Connect your computer to the USB jack on the DFC100 front panel.

Windows will automatically discover the DFC100 and open the Install New Hardware wizard. Click Next to begin the wizard and automatically install the application.

If Windows does not automatically discover the DFC100, open the setup program by going to start > Programs > Dolby > DFC100 Setup.

When the program starts, it displays the Profile tab shown in Figure 6‐1.

6.3 Entering the Profile Tab InformationEnter the information requested on this tab for use by system installers. These fields are purely informational.

This screen also displays the summary network information for the machine and its software version. When finished, switch to the Filter tab.

6.4 Preparing to CalibrateOn the Filter tab, shown in Figure 6‐2, you choose the synchronization delay value that results in the best 3D viewing with the least crosstalk between eyes for each running mode.

Note: This process is crucial for effective operation of the system. Follow the steps carefully.

Good visual acuity is important. If you require corrective lenses to see a cinema screen clearly, be sure to have them available.


Adjusting the Sync Delay Value

Perform the following steps:

1. On your computer click the Lock value check box to unlock the running mode you wish to adjust.

2. Click the slider to activate the adjustment mode.3. Play the synchronization delay test clip.4. Put on Cat. No. 834 3D glasses and view the screen, covering or closing first one eye

and then the other.

6.5 Adjusting the Sync Delay ValueProper adjustment of the sync delay value to minimize visual crosstalk between the left‐eye and right‐eye images is crucial to successful implementation of Dolby 3D.

Note: You must also set the projector to match the operation mode you are configuring in the DFC100.

Note: Do not adjust the sync delay with both eyes open. Shut or cover one eye and adjust the image for your open eye.


DFC100 Setup

When you begin the adjustment, your left eye will see an image like that shown in Figure 6‐3, and your right eye will see an image like that shown in Figure 6‐4.

When correctly optimized, your left eye should see LEFT in bright white on a dark background. When correctly optimized, your right eye should see RIGHT in bright white on a dark background. Typically, the background can be optimized to be as dark as the second rectangle from the top of the spectrum.

If you can see both LEFT and RIGHT with one eye, sync delay is not correctly optimized.


Entering the Network Information

There will be a range of delay values that appear acceptable. The optimum delay value is at the center of this acceptable range as shown in Figure 6‐5.

The following steps describe a systematic method of finding this optimum delay value. Keep one eye closed or covered while you complete these steps.

1. Use the <Page Up> and <Page Down> keys to adjust the sync delay value in large increments until you arrive at a point inside the acceptable range.

2. Use < ↓ > and < ↑ > to adjust the value in small increments until you locate one end point of the acceptable range where the word background becomes perceptibly lighter. Note the value.

3. Continue to use < ↓ > and < ↑ > until you locate the other end point of the acceptable range where the word background becomes perceptibly lighter. Note the value.

4. Compute the arithmetic average of the two end points.5. Move the slider to the computed average value. Verify that the image is visually

acceptable.6. When you are satisfied, click the Lock value check box again to lock it.7. Repeat these steps for the remaining running modes.

Under normal conditions this process is repeated only if the DFC100 or filter wheel is replaced.

6.6 Entering the Network InformationIf the DFC100 is being placed in a networked auditorium, you must verify the information on the Network tab shown in Figure 6‐6.

The default values are shown in Figure 6‐6. Customize them to meet your needs.

6.6.1 Remote Setup

When the DFC100 is networked, you can set it up remotely using the Ethernet connector on the rear panel. To do so, choose Connect to remote device on the Action menu of the setup application, and then enter the DFC100’s IP address in the dialog box that appears.

You can also set up the DFC100 over a direct Ethernet connection with a crossover cable. In this case, you would choose Connect to local device on the Action menu.

6.6.2 Remote Activation

When the DFC100 is networked, it can be remotely activated by any instance of the Dolby Show Manager application using listed cues as described in the Dolby Show Manager online help.

Note: Do not use a remote Ethernet connection to reconfigure the Ethernet information.

For a new installation, use the default IP address 192.168.1.135.


Entering I/O Information

6.7 Entering I/O InformationYou can configure the GPI/O pins used for the left/right synchronization signal on the I/O tab if you choose not to use the default GPO 1 values shown in Figure 6‐7. GPO 1–GPO 7 are available. Choose an option in the drop‐down list.

The 37‐pin D‐connector GPI/O synchronization signal cable shipped with the system only accommodates GPO 1–GPO 3. If you need to use GPO 4–GPO 7 your cable will require custom alteration. Contact Dolby for further information.

If you cannot make a selection on the I/O tab, your DFC100 firmware is out of date. Use the process described in Updating DFC100 System Software to bring it up to date.

Chapter 7

Additional DFC100 Software Functions

As long as the DFC100 is operational, the system software serves three purposes in addition to calibration:

• Monitoring System Status • Saving and Opening Device Settings Files• Updating DFC100 System Software

7.1 Monitoring System StatusWhen Monitor is checked in the Window menu, a real‐time image of the DFC100 appears at the bottom of the application screen (as shown in Figure 6‐2 and the other screenshots in that chapter). It reflects current status and is updated in real time, allowing easy remote monitoring of the DFC100 when it is networked.

7.2 Saving and Opening Device Settings FilesWhen you click the disk icon on the left of the application window, shown in Figure 7‐1, the system displays a Save Device Settings dialog box. To save current device settings to a file, enter a name for the file and select a location, then click OK. If you exchange the original DFC100 for another, you can configure the new machine by opening the saved file and applying the settings. To open an existing device settings file, click the folder icon.

When you move or exchange the motor and filter assembly, you must always redo the settings on the Filter tab.

Note: Device settings files are saved with the .dlb file extension. Name them explicitly and store them separately from software update files to avoid confusion.

7.3 Updating DFC100 System SoftwareWhen software updates become available, you can install them using the Action menu as shown in Figure 7‐2.

Chapter 8

Color Correction and Crosstalk Cancellation

Before placing Dolby® 3D in service, you must make important adjustments to the color display of your cinema presentation system. The details of this process will vary for each supported system. This chapter provides directions for the Dolby Digital Cinema presentation system where the required color processing is performed in the DSP100 Dolby Show Player. Accomplishing these tasks requires the following:

• A pair of Cat. No. 835 calibration lenses

• A colorimeter. Many different colorimeters may be used for making these adjustments. Among the most popular are Photo Research® models PR‐655, and PR‐701; Konica Minolta™ model CS‐200; and Ultra Stereo model PCA100.

• A Microsoft® Windows® 2000 or XP laptop with an optical drive.

8.1 Color CorrectionTo correct your system colors for optimal 3D presentations, follow these steps:

1. Connect your computer to the USB port on the front panel of the DSP100 Dolby Show Player.

2. Open the Show Player setup application. The system displays the main screen shown in Figure 8‐1.

Caution: Do not use curved glasses to perform color correction. Use the flat lenses provided specifically for this task.

Note: You must be proficient in the use of a colorimeter. For assistance, see the manufacturer’s documentation.

3. Click Launch Color Correction Wizard.The system displays the wizard welcome screen shown in Figure 8‐2.

Note: Advanced users need not follow the wizard. If you click Advanced, all the required settings are available in a single window and can be individually modified.

4. Click Next when you are ready.The system displays the Load Saved Measurements screen shown in Figure 8‐3.

5. To open a saved measurement file, check the Load Saved Measurements box, browse to the network location of the saved file, and click Open. Using saved measurements saves considerable time and minimizes errors. We recommend using them whenever possible. When you have completed this step, click Next.The system displays the Set up Non‐3D Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐4.

6. Set the Show Player playback mode as directed on the screen, then click Next.The system displays the Projector Primary Colors screen shown in Figure 8‐5.

7. On this screen, click Reset To Ideal Colors. Click Next to proceed with the wizard.

The system displays the Set up Generic 3D Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐6.

Caution: Optimum light efficiency for 3D depends on setting up your projector to dono color correction when in 3D modes. In 3D modes, all color correction must be done in the playback server. Use the uncorrected nominal_v2.mcg color values and the DCI_Xenon.tcgd target color gamut in the projector.

8. Follow the instructions on the screen. Use only the flat correction lenses provided for color correction (and not curved 3D glasses). Click Next when you are ready.The system displays the Dolby 3D Uncorrected Primary Colors screen shown in Figure 8‐7.

Color Correction

Use this process to enter a value for each of the four colors for the right eye and left eye:

i. Secure either the left or the right calibration lens in front of the colorimeter.ii. Enable the DFC100 so the filter wheel is inserted into the light path.iii. Play one of the color server test‐pattern clips named on the screen.iv. Measure the x and y values with the colorimeter, and record them in the screen.v. Secure the other lens in front of the colorimeter.vi. Replay the clip.vii. Measure the x and y values with the colorimeter, and record them in the screen.viii.When you have repeated this process for all four colors, click Next.The system displays the Show Player Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐8.

9. Press Stop twice to put the Show Player into Selected mode. Click Next when you are ready.

The system displays the Setup Dolby 3D Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐9.

Caution: Do not skip this step. It ensures that your measurements are properly saved in the Show Player.

10. Take the steps listed on the screen. When you are ready, click Next.The system displays the Dolby 3D Corrected White Point screen shown in Figure 8‐10.

Color Correction

11. Remeasure the corrected white point for each eye using this process:i. Secure either the left or the right calibration lens in front of the colorimeter.ii. Enable the DFC100 so the filter wheel is inserted into the light path.iii. Play the FS White test‐pattern clip.iv. Measure the x and y values with the colorimeter, and record them in the screen.v. Secure the other lens in front of the colorimeter.vi. Replay the clip.vii. Measure the x and y values with the colorimeter, and record them in the screen.viii.When you have repeated this process for both eyes, click Next.The system displays the Show Player Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐8.


The system recalculates the color coefficients, and then displays the Balancing screen shown in Figure 8‐11.

13. Engage the DFC100 and play the FS White clip. Measure the brightness, first with one lens in front of the colorimeter, then with the other. Record the values in the screen. When you are finished, click Next.The system displays the Show Player Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐8.





The system validates your input, recalculates the color coefficients, and then displays the screen Final Measurement screen shown in Figure 8‐12.

15. Engage the DFC100 and play the FS White clip. Measure the x, the y, and the brightness values, first with one lens in front of the colorimeter, then with the other. Record these in the screen. When you are finished, click Next.The system displays the Show Player Mode screen shown in Figure 8‐8.





Crosstalk Cancellation

The system displays a summary. An example is shown in Figure 8‐13.Figure 8‐13

You can print and save this information. We highly recommend that you save and store it in order to reload the settings without having to remeasure colors.

Click Finish to close the wizard and return to the main screen shown in Figure 8‐1.

8.2 Crosstalk CancellationOptimal image presentation requires subtracting 1% of each eye’s image from the other. Future versions of the software will address this automatically, but currently you must configure this manually on the Advanced tab of the Show Player setup application.

1. On the main screen shown in Figure 8‐1, click Advanced.The system displays the tab shown in Figure 8‐14.

Remote Commands and Control

The DFC100 is designed for remote serial or Ethernet connections.

B.1 Serial ConnectionYou can connect to the rear‐panel serial port of the DFC100 and send ASCII character strings to set parameters and obtain current status information.

Required port settings are:

• 9,600 bps• 8 data bits• No parity• 1 stop bit

After the DFC100 has found an authorized server, commands can simply be typed in any serial communication program such as HyperTerminal.

B.2 Ethernet ConnectionYou can connect to the Ethernet port of the DFC100 and use Telnet to send ASCII character strings to set parameters and obtain current status information.

The default configuration is:

IP address: 192.168.1.135Subnet mask: 255.255.255.128Default gateway 192.168.1.129

Send the command strings to port 61412.
