Lesson Text:John 12:1-8

The Last Week, Saturday Evening

After Lazarus’ Resurrection

John 11:53-57 NKJV Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death. (54) Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.

John 11:53-57 continued (55) And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. (56) Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?" (57) Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.

After Lazarus’ ResurrectionThe Chief Priest

and Scribes sought to put Jesus to

death

They had orders to arrest Jesus upon

His return to Jerusalem

All male Jews were required to attend Passover, Ex. 23:14

Many doubted whether Jesus would return

Doing What YOU CanJohn 12:1-8 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. (2) There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. (3) Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

John 12:1-8 continued (4) But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said, (5) "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denariiand given to the poor?" (6) This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. (7) But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. (8) For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”

Saturday Night• House of Simon the Leper,

Matt. 26:6• Martha served the food• Lazarus who had been dead

was there

A Supper for Jesus

• Pound – (litra) a liquid of 12 ounces.

• Spikenard – fragrant east Indian plant

• It was worth 300 denarius, i.e. the amount a laborer would make in a year

Mary took a pound

of spikenard

A Waste of Money• He was not alone• Mark 14:4-5 But there were

some who were indignant among themselves, and said, "Why was this fragrant oil wasted? (5) For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they criticized her sharply.

• Judas really did not care for the poor

Judas Iscariot

questions why

money was not given to the poor.

Something Beautiful• Matthew 26:10 ESV But

Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.

• A beautiful thing (KJV –good work)

• When we do something for Jesus, It is beautiful

Jesus perceived

their murmuring

Anointed Jesus For His Burial

Matt. 26:11-12 NKJV For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. (12) For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial.

How did she know?

Matthew 16:21 NKJV From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

Matthew 20:18-19 NKJV "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, (19) and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.”

Great Faith

Matthew 26:13 NKJV Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Lack of Faith

1. It cost too much

2. It will not work

3. We don’t have enough people

4. Why did God allow this to happen

5. I’m just too old, young, poor, rich, etc.

2 Peter 3:4 NKJV and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

2 Peter 3:9-12 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

2 Peter 3:9-12 continued (11) Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, (12) looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
