Doing a search in Bibliographyof British and Irish history and exporting references to the Refworks database
Log on via the Portal withyour network username and password
Click on Learning Resources tab
Under Library Databasesclick on B and selectBibliography ofBritish and Irish History

You can do a simpleor an advanced search
This what the advanced search screen looks like
This the simple search screen. We will do a simple search using the keyword plantation
Total number of hits forplantation
When you finish typing in you search term you get a drop down menu suggesting alternative search terms. We will select Plantation,Ulster
Total numberof hits for
Plantation, Ulster
Click on search to see the hits
These are the first 6 of the106 hits
We will select number 4
We are told this is a journal article
The article is from the journalHistory Ireland
If we click on the journal title we get all the articlesfrom the journalindexed by BBIH
There is full text online access via the JSTOR database.We subscribe to JSTOR.If you click on this linkyou are taken to a list of theHistory of Ireland holdings inJSTOR

To do this click on export
To export select Refworks and click onExport

Now click on SAVE
Save to the Desktop

Click on Save

And this is what it looks like in Notepad.This will change once we export to Refworks
We now need to open up Refworks.
To do this logon via the Portal, select the Learning Resources tab, and under Library databases select Refworks
If you haven’t already registered with
Refworks you will be asked to do so.
At a drop down menu under ReferencesSelect Import
Change Import filter/dataSource and Database to InternationalMedieval Bibliography
Now click on Browse
Select the file and then clickon Open
The file is now ready toImport
Click on Import
You now get this screen.To see the references click onView last imported folder
Here are the 5 imported references
We will create a folder calledPlantation. To do this click on Folders,and at the drop down menu selectCreate new folder
Name the folderand click on OK
These are the 5 references.We will put all 5 in thePlantation folder
We will selectall in the list

Click on the arrowat the Put in folder box
From the drop down menuselect the Plantation folder
When you get this click on OK
You then get this message
Now go to either View or Foldersand select Plantation fromthe drop down menus
Here is the Plantation folder
Now click on Bibliography
Here is the Bibliography screen
Click on the arrow for a drop down menu of output styles and select the style you want.
Always check with your lecturer forthe preferred departmental style
We will stay with Harvard, British standard
Click on the arrow beside choose a folder andthen select plantation
Now click on Create Bibliography
Here are the Plantation references in the Harvard referencing style.You can add and delete references from the folder.You can also change the referencing style at any time.
