We are building a better east-west connection between growing communities. We’ll also build new walking and cycling facilities, including a new overpass on the Federation Trail.

We’ve started construction works at Fitzgerald Road and Dohertys Road where traffic lights will be installed.

DOHERTYS ROAD UPGRADE

WESTERN ROADS UPGRADE SUMMER 2020

We’re continuing to upgrade Dohertys Road between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade.

Road rehabilitation has started between Grieve Parade and Fitzgerald Road where traffic has moved from the old lanes to the new lanes.

This involves re-asphalting the old/existing road to accommodate the new lanes.

As part of Victoria’s Big Build, we’re building big this summer and there will be disruptions across the network. Find out if you’re affected by visiting bigbuild.vic.gov.au

Gordon Luck Avenue roundabout

From Thursday 2 January, we’ll close the intersection of Dohertys and Fitzgerald Road for three weeks. We’ll work 24/7 to get the work done.

There will also be works on the Westgate Tunnel project during this time. Find out if you’re affected by visiting bigbuild.vic.gov.au

Upcoming worksWhat are we doing?

Over summer, we’ll:

• re-asphalt the old part of Dohertys Road in the sections where vehicles have moved to the new lanes

• continue upgrading the intersection at Dohertys and Hume Road. The intersection will be closed in early 2020 to install traffic lights

• continue works at Fitzgerald Road and Dohertys Road in preparation for a full closure of this intersection in January 2020

• install barriers, commence piling, and pavement construction at Cherry Drain to accommodate the new lanes on Dohertys Road

• build the columns and crossheads at Federation Trail in preparation for the beam installation in the first quarter of 2020.

In December, we’ll:

• commence work on the retaining wall on the Dohertys Road Bridge

• continue concrete and earthworks at Federation Trail for the new Federation Trail overpass.

• continue structural works at Cherry Drain.

In January, we’ll:

• rebuild the intersection of Dohertys and Fitzgerald Road

• complete installation of new street lighting and traffic signals.

When will this happen? We’ll work Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and Saturdays between 7am and 5pm.

We’re planning to complete some intermittent night works to minimise disruptions to traffic and local businesses.

At this stage no construction work has been planned on the project site between 22 December and 2 January. However, traffic barriers will remain in place during this period.

On Dohertys Road between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade, we’re:

adding an extra lane in each direction

installing new traffic lights at the Fitzgerald Road and Hume Road intersections

building an overpass for the Federation Trail

building a second bridge over the Princes Freeway

building roundabouts at Gordon Luck Avenue, Cherry Lane and Cyanamid Street

adding new walking and cycling paths

Improving safety and accessibility

The upgrade will improve safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists travelling on Dohertys Road by providing new connections and access facilities.

Managing the environment We value the environment and understand the importance of trees for the community. We always work to minimise tree removal where we can. With all major projects, we balance the need to remove vegetation with the impact on the environment.

We also consider the significance of particular trees and vegetation on our cultural heritage.

We’ll replant trees and shrubs across the broader project area when construction is finished. More than 4000 new trees and 40,000 new shrubs will be planted across the Western suburbs.

How will the Dohertys Road works affect you?Construction activities will include clearing vegetation and other materials, as well as relocating utility services. We’ll also be doing earthworks, laying new asphalt and pavement and installing traffic management.

We’ll minimise disruptions by:

• completing the most disruptive works during the day

• avoiding reverse beepers wherever possible to reduce the beeping noises you often hear on construction sites

• select low-noise emitting equipment and establish strict noise emission limits for specific equipment, where available

• where possible, we will use rubber-tyred rather than steel-tracked equipment.

Detours may be in place during this time. Please follow the detour signs or visit bigbuild.vic.gov.au for more information.

Mapping our progress From Footscray to Werribee, we’ve got you covered. See the proposed designs and latest progress of the Western Roads Upgrade on our new interactive map. Visit roadprojects.vic.gov.au/westernroadsupgrade to access the map.
