Workshop details: About David Epston: Workshop information: In this workshop, David will argue that what he is referring to as 'heart and soul' and 'deep humanity' are essential to narrative therapy practice, especially in an era of many therapies being manualized and soon robotised. He will introduce notions of 'moral character', 'moral activism' and a full exploration of a term Michael White regularly cited eg. "purposes for living one's life" but never used. Videos, transcripts and letters will be used to convey how such a practice comes to 'know' the other ─ through the intrigue and fascination of the other, through the magic and mystery of the other, and most importantly the originality and particularity of the other. David was one of the originators of Narrative Therapy (1985 to present) along with Michael White who died in 2008. He has published widely (11 books, 20 chapters and approximately 200 published papers) and is currently working on several book projects with colleagues in the United States, Denmark and New Zealand. He has taught at many universities and offered many workshops around the world over the past 30 years. His most recent books were: NiaNia, Bush and Epston (2017): Collaborative and Indigenous Mental Health Therapy: Taitahono; Stories of Maori Healing and Psychiatry, London, Routledge; Marsten, Epston and Markham (2016), Narrative Therapy in Wonderland: Connecting with Young People's Imaginative Know-how, New York, WWNorton. He is the founding editor of The Journal of Narrative Family Therapy (www.journalnft.com) and a website that archives many of his papers, etc (www.narrativeapproaches.com).
