The OHSU Doernbecher Hematology Oncology Program is nationally recognized as a comprehensive center for the treatment of children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders . We offer a breadth and depth of clinical expertise provided by:

When you refer your patients with leukemia or lymphoma to us, they will be treated at Doernbecher on a protocol designed by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and they may choose to enroll in a clinical research trial . Participation in clinical trials gives your patient access to the newest, most advanced treatments . Linda Stork, M .D ., director of Hematology/Oncology at Doernbecher, is an internationally respected expert in childhood leukemia and collaborates in the design of these therapeutic trials . One of our physician scientists, Bill Chang, M .D ., Ph .D ., is studying leukemia development in the laboratory and treats patients with complex leukemia .

Comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach

Throughout the course of treatment, your patients will receive comprehensive care from our multidisciplinary team of experts in:

Highly specialized care

• Patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia receive most of their treatment in our oncology clinic and infusion center .

Oregon’s only comprehensive program for children and adolescents with brain tumors

Doernbecher’s Neuro-Oncology Program is unique in the state of Oregon and provides comprehensive care to your patients with a multidisciplinary and highly individualized approach . Kellie Nazemi, M .D ., a nationally recognized expert in pediatric brain tumors, directs a team of specialists from:

• Neurosurgery • Radiation oncology• Neuro-radiology • Neuro-pathology• Neurology • Audiology • Endocrinology and other pediatric subspecialties• Physical and occupational therapy• Social workers• School teacher

Brain tumors comprise approximately 35 percent of newly diagnosed childhood cancers at Doernbecher . We treat more than 40 patients with newly diagnosed brain tumors each year and follow many more as long-term survivors .

Collaborative, multidisciplinary approach

The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board at Doernbecher meets weekly to discuss new, recurrent, and complex cases in order to determine the best surgical and medical management for each child . Your patient may be treated on COG protocols or with other leading-edge therapies designed for tumors with recognized poor outcomes .

The Oregon Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive care to children and adults with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and other bleeding and clotting disorders . Recognizing that living with bleeding or clotting disorders creates unique challenges for patients and families, we provide a variety of services to help make life as normal as possible:

Director of the Oregon Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Michael Recht, M .D ., Ph .D ., is an internationally recognized expert in hemophilia and benign hematology . He serves as regional director for the federally funded hemophilia programs of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska, providing leadership and expertise to all of the Northwest . He and his team are always available for telephone consultation .

We understand that many families facing long-term treatment for bleeding disorders have difficulty obtaining insurance or reach their lifetime insurance cap in a few years . Accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and the National Marrow Donor Program, the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program is the only one of its kind in the state .

Comprehensive treatment

Our transplant program offers allogeneic (from a donor) or autologous (from self ) marrow transplants for children and young adults with advanced or recurrent cancers including:

• Leukemia • Lymphoma • Neuroblastoma • Brain tumors

We also provide transplants for children with nonmalignant diseases including:

• Aplastic anemia and other bone marrow failure syndromes • Thalassemia• Inborn errors of metabolism• Immunodeficiency syndromes

Expert, multidisciplinary care

Our director, Eneida Nemecek, M .D ., M .S ., is an internationally respected expert in marrow transplantation . She and her team provide advanced subspecialty care and innovative treatment regimens to your patients . During and after the month-long inpatient stay following stem cell infusion, your patient will receive:

• Round-the-clock skilled nursing care and consultations from many of the expert subspecialists at Doernbecher .

• Close monitoring by our transplant team in the Oncology Clinic for complications after marrow engraftment, like graft-vs-host disease .

Childhood Cancer Survivor Program

The Doernbecher Childhood Cancer Survivor Program provides comprehensive care and support to survivors of childhood cancer, including anyone under age 30 who has been cancer free and off treatment for at least two years . Susan Lindemulder, M .D ., pediatric hematologist/oncologist with advanced training in clinical research, directs this vital program .

Specialized support from our Survivorship Clinic

In our Survivorship Clinic, a multidisciplinary team of specialists meets weekly and addresses the medical, neuro-psychological and psychosocial issues facing these adolescents and young adults . Our team includes:

OHSU Adolescent and Young Adult Program

The Adolescent and Young Adult Program was established to meet the unique emotional, physical and social needs of cancer patients between the ages of 15 and 40, and to maximize the quality of life of every survivor of childhood cancer . Brandon Hayes-Lattin, M .D ., is the director of the OHSU AYA program, one of only a few such programs in the United States . Susan Lindemulder, M .D ., serves as a liaison between the pediatric and adult programs offered to OHSU and Doernbecher patients . Also unique in the U .S ., Doernbecher and OHSU offer a subspecialty training program in AYA oncology .

Bridges — Pediatric Palliative and Comfort Care Program

The Bridges Program at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital combines medical care with psychological, physical, social and spiritual support for your patients with potentially life-limiting conditions, and helps families cope with serious illness and end-of-life issues .

Our palliative care specialists offer families help with:

• Decisions about care• Accessing hospice and community resources• Pain and symptom management• Emotional responses and grief experienced by patients’ families and caregivers
