Department of Energy

• The Department of Energy (DOE) is tasked with providing governmental control and oversight with regards to energy technology and policy within the United States.

• The DOE originated in the establishment of the Manhattan Project, which was developed to engineer the Atomic Bomb.

• The Atomic Energy Act of 1946 instituted the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and placed all nuclear developmental activity under civilian control.

• In 1954, under the auspices of the Energy Act of 1954, the AEC begin to design and develop commercial and civilian uses for nuclear energy.

• The energy crisis of the 1970’s, coupled with the growth in government sponsored nuclear energy projects, facilitated the need for a cohesive energy policy.

• The Federal Energy Administration, Energy Research and Development Administration, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (formerly AEC) were combined, through the passage of the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977, to form the DOE.

• The DOE website can be accessed at http://www.energy.gov/.

Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)• The Office of Scientific and

Technical Information (OSTI) is tasked with the electronic distribution of scientific R & D information sponsored, and used, by the DOE.

• OSTI was established in 1947, under the authority of the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, as the Technical Information Program.

• OSTI was founded to disseminate information about the Manhattan Project and the development of nuclear weapons.

• The OSTI website provides access to DOE scientific databases, US federal scientific databases, and global scientific databases.

• The OSTI website can be accessed at the http://www.osti.gov/home/.

Science Accelerator• Introduced in 2007, Science

Accelerator was designed to conduct concurrent searches over a multitude of scientific databases sponsored by the DOE..

• Through use of Federated Search Architecture, Science Accelerator provides basic and advanced search queries which analyze DOE related databases such as those used by OSTI.

• Formats searched by Science Accelerator include: Full-text Research Reports, Energy Citations, Green Energy Research, DOE Data, Videos, Pre-published Drafts, and more.

• Science Accelerator provides a user the ability to register for alerts when new information on a specific topic is made available to the public.

• Science Accelerator can be accessed at http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov/.

Information Bridge

• Made available to the public in 1998, Information Bridge was designed to provide access to DOE and DOE-sponsored research literature.

• Currently, Information Bridge provides approximately 299,000 full text documents and citations; dating from 1991.

• Documents cover fields such as: physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental science, energy technology, engineering, computer/ information science, and green energy.

• Information Bridge can be accessed by going to http://www.osti.gov/bridge/.

DOE Data Explorer

• DOE Data Explorer (DDE) was established in 2008 with the mission of providing access to DOE data and non-textual information to scientists, students, and interested members of the general public.

• DDE can be used to access the following data: computer simulations, numeric data files, figures and plots, interactive maps, multimedia, and scientific images.

• The site also includes a news page with new information and maintains a featured data collection column.

• DDE can be accessed by going to http://www.osti.gov/dataexplorer/.

DOE R&D Accomplishments

• The Department of Energy Research and Development (R&D) Accomplishments website was designed to promote DOE accomplishments that resulted in significant economic, social, or scientific advances.

• The site is provides separate pages for the Database, Laureates, and Featured Scientists.

• An exploration page allows the user to explore basic snapshots and stories of interest.

• Finally, a Finding Aids page is made available to help simplify the search parameters of the site.

• R&D can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/accomplishments/.

Page 9: Doeosti

DOE Green Energy

• On April 21, 2010, in celebration of Earth Day, OSTI launched DOE Green Energy (GE).

• GE is a subject specific website that provides public access to bibliographic citations, technical reports, and patent reports that are focused on renewable/ sustainable energy resources.

• GE use semantic mapping to more efficiently access the desired information of the user.

• The site provides user access to 34,500 technical reports and 1,300 patents.

• GE can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/greenenergy/.

Page 10: Doeosti

DOE Patents

• In 2007, OSTI, through DOepatents, made available 20,000 patent records that were the end-result of DOE sponsored research.

• These records span from predecessor organizations of the 1940’s to the DOE in the present time.

• DOepatents consists of bibliographic records and, when available, full text records.

• The site also includes hyperlinks dealing in Patent News, Recent Inventions, and Technology Transfer.

• Doepatents can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/doepatents/.

Page 11: Doeosti

Science Cinema

• In 2011, Science Cinema (SC) was introduced in order to provide videos of breakthrough science sponsored by the DOE.

• SC also has access to partnered videos from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

• SC provides 1,700 voice indexed video recordings and links to 400 additional recordings.

• SC can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/sciencecinema/.

Page 12: Doeosti

E-Print Network

• The E-Print network was established as a communications technology which allows scientists and students to provide access to electronically produced research and works.

• The site provides access to 35,000 websites/ databases and 5.5 million scientific e-prints.

• E-prints include preprints, reprints, technical reports, conference publications or other means of electronic communication.

• E-Print Network can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/eprints/.

Page 13: Doeosti

Energy Citations Database

• The Energy Citations Database (ECD), established in 2001, was instituted to provide bibliographic citations on work ranging from 1948 to the present.

• The ECD provides access to 2,467,000 free bibliographic citations.

• Included in this are 301,000 complete electronic documents.

• ECD can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/.

Page 14: Doeosti

Science Conference Proceedings

• Science Conference Proceedings (SCP) was released in 2005 in order to provide access to conference papers in disciplines of interest to the DOE.

• The accessed sites are primarily composed of labs and professional societies.

• SCP can be accessed at http://www.osti.gov/scienceconferences/.

Science.gov

• Science.gov is a collaborative project between 17 government science organizations and 13 federal agencies to provide wide ranging access to U.S. sponsored scientific research.

• Originally launched in 2002, site updates are completed every 6 weeks and can e searched topically or through a search box.

• Users are granted search access to 50 different databases and 2100 websites containing scientific information.

• Sites are selected by agency information managers and librarians as representative of accurate government scientific work.

• The site can be accessed at http://www.science.gov /.
